Holding Joe Biden’s Family to the Barney Frank Standard

Welcome Instapundit Readers! While you’re here, you might want to check my followup to this post wherein I pose some questions and offer some advice to the Vice President.

During last fall’s presidential campaign, Barney Frank likely served as an inspiration to some bloggers eager to score points with the far left when he became one of “the first Democrats to publicly say Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin’s family background, including the pregnancy of her unwed teenage daughter, should be fair game for campaign discussion.

If the daughter of a candidate for Vice President is “fair game” for campaign discussion, it follows that the daughter of the sitting Vice President should be “fair game” for political discussion.

Apparently the mainstream media doesn’t think so.

Starting yesterday, Drudge has been linking a number of articles reporting that a “‘friend’ of Vice President Joseph Biden’s daughter, Ashley, is attempting to hawk a videotape that he claims shows her snorting cocaine at a house party this month in Delaware.”  Yet, except for a few New York area papers (Newsday, NY Post, NY Daily News), the “old media” have not picked up on this story.

In an ideal world, this wouldn’t, indeed, likely shouldn’t be news.  But, it seems that whenever the child of a Republican politician is caught up in a scandal, the MSM, following the lead of Democrats like Frank, calls their private lives “fair game.”  Recall how quickly they were in May and June of 2001 to jump on the story of Jenna Bush’s underage drinking escapade.

The story made the cover of People magazine.  And this was drinking not drugs.

Maybe it’s time for Barney to start bullying them, holding them to the standard he set for Biden’s rival for the Vice-Presidency last fall.

  1. Let me be one of the first to say that the private lives of Democrat Vice President Joe Biden and his youngest daughter Democrat Ashley Biden should not be used for politcal theatre. I know his daughter has been known to use Marijuana but that does not implicate her in the rumors of cocaine use. Yes there may be video of her doing 4 lines of coke at a Delaware party. I’d like to ask the bloggers on this site to refrain from mocking the Democrat Vice President, or Democrat Obamateleprompter for choosing Mr Biden to be one heart beat away from the Presidency. I highly doubt whether this would be used to possibly blackmail the Vice President and put the counrty at risk. When the VP gets proper help for his daughter, he can get back to the serious business of of….well get back to the serious business of whatever he does. Our thoughts are with Joe and his family at this time. I’d encourage those with the video to only use it to educate other young people as to the dangers of drug abuse. This could be a valuable teaching moment for the country.

  3. Conservative bloggers need to pass around the hat to buy the video. Next time any leftist media outlet starts in on the child of a conservative or Republican, release it.

Time to start playing the game by their rules. If they don’t like it, they can change their rules.

  4. Barney Frank is certainly not the only idiotic hypocrite in Washington, although he does have the funniest speech impediment. But, if attention wants to be directed elsewhere, one could mention that Chairman Zero has named one of those greedy, much maligned AIG board members to his economic task force.

The Teleprompter made him do it.

  5. I think it’s funny that you all blather on about Bush-bashing and how people who do it must have some kind psychological disease. I just wonder what to make of this obsession with Barney Frank…

  6. Kevin, just one thing for you to consider–please take note of the playful tone of my posts about the unhappy Mr. Frank. I’m having fun with this, writing these posts with a smile, not a scowl.

Sometimes, politicians make themselves ready objects for our sport and posts pointing out their arrogance and hypocrisy are, well, just too easy. And too much fun. Way too much fun.

Take a gander at Glenn Reynolds‘s posts on Chris Dodd. Or Ace on Andrew Sullivan.

And note as well that I acknowledge Barney’s intelligence.

And then consider the point of this very post, to use Barney’s words to point out the hypocrisy of Democrats and the media. I’m just asking him to be consistent.

Finally, if I do have an obsession and if it is a bit overmuch, it should be easy for you to point out the flaws of my argument rather than obsess about my alleged obsession.

Democrat former VP Gore’s son, Democrat Al Gore III drunk driving and marijuana possession in 2007. Pretend it never happened and look for a Republican touching a policemens foot in a bathroom or a Republican sending dirty e mails to a 17 year old.

Personally, I really couldn’t care any less about Biden’s daughter. For entertainment value, Joe is a one man show.

  11. The double standard though is striking. By now the MSM should be labeling Biden a boob and gaffe machine and liability to the new administration. How could Obama have picked him to be one heartbeat away from the Presidency? All Quayle did was mis spell potatoeee.

  14. I look at this issue simply:

Did any Democrat take the High Road when it came to President Bush?

Did they take the High Road when it came to president Bush’s daughters?

How about Vice president Cheney’s family?

    How about Palin’s family?

The answer is NO. The Democrats changed the rules the past 8 years. We turned the other cheek for 8 years and all it got was more hateful democrats.

Attack, attack, attack. The same way Andrew Sullivan attacks Palin.

I’m glad you clarified that for Paul A’Barge, Gene. I have to admit, for a second I was thinking, what the hell happened to Gene?! Is he high?! Did Megan McCain get to him?! Then I re-read that cheesy, liberal-speak last line about this being a “valuable teaching moment for the country” and suddenly, everything was right with the world again.

Of course, the bad news is that within 24 hours we will probably see one of our wimpy GOP representatives making a statement like yours, SARCASM FREE. I don’t know how these clowns expect to ever win another election if they don’t even have the guts to demand that the Democrats live by the same rules they apply to the GOP.

  22. You had me going with the “Frank standard” thing. Frank was involved in two scandals of his own, I guess you know. Since they both involved, er, boyfriends, and sleaziness in different genres, I felt he really put homosexuals on the spot by playing down to some very old stereotypes. Let down the side, as it were. And he absolutely “played the gay card” to get out of it. He owes the people, and particularly owes homosexuals, for those lapses of ethical judgment–which leaves him in a poor position to act as conscience of the party in attack mode.

The Vice-President’s daughter ought not to be fair game, except that by campaigning, fostering support, and making policy statements, she made herself something other than a daughter and a private citizen: a player. There are rules for players, and she appears to have broken one. I’m not bloodthirsty, but she should have a publicly memorable tally marked on her score card, for future reference.

I’m sick and tired of Republicans acting with restraint and then seeing our leaders’ kids getting trashed all the time by gleeful, smirking chimps like Couric, Lauer, etc. Let’s excoriate Biden’s coke-using daughter and leave her as an object lesson that we’re playing by Alinsky rules, now, too. 35. We are talking daughters of the Vice President. The parallel would be with Mary Cheney. On January 20, 2009, Dan wrote:

Yet, gay rights’ groups won’t give this impressive young lady much credit. They wanted her to use her prominence as a politician’s daughter to become a professional activist. But, that’s not the kind of person Mary is. She is not an activist, not wishing to be an outspoken public advocate for any cause.

Notice how we conservatives are not calling on Biden’s adult daughter to be an outspoken public advocate for (a) legalizing drugs, or, (b) strong government help to cure the drug afflicted/addicted.

Personally, I think that Joe Biden on speed would be a vast improvement in his already sterling beginning as Obama Administration Bozo.

Uh, excuse me, MickeyMouse, but are now supposed to be considered as minorities? Does that mean that we can compete for government handouts between blacks, Hispanics, women and Asians? (Oops, scratch that last one – Asians aren’t a “real” minority because they show initiative and don’t take government assistance.)

If you think that Bawney Fwank gets a pass from us just because he enjoys having sex with men, then you are more confused and idiotic than I thought.

Here’s a little phrase you can learn about: identity politics. It’s NOT a good thing.
