BREAKING: Vermont Legalizes Same-Sex Marriage!
A two-thirds vote to override the veto from Vermont Governor Jim Douglas was needed. The vote was 23-5 to override in the state Senate and 100-49 to override in the House. Vermont now becomes the first state to decide this matter by action from the legislature, bringing to 4 the total number of U.S. states allowing same-sex marriage recognize same-sex marriages!
Expect social conservatives to bemoan this apparent sign of the Apocalypse in 5…4…3…

But I thought we had to win a popular vote for it to be legit! [/snark]
Way to go Vermont! Extra cheers for overriding the disgusting veto by the governor too.

torrentprime, snark aside, that touches on what I’m interested in hearing about from the resident conservatives (I know what “social conservatives” will say, so I’m much more interested in the opinion of the anti-”judicial activism” contingent). I agree, it is a wonderful thing. While I don’t have the same objections to the judiciary recognizing a right to equal treatment under the law, I do agree with the idea that a legislative process is the ideal way for states to allow or recognize same-sex marriage. This really is the way it “ought to be done” and I’m happy to see it.

Resident Conservative here. I think the Vermont approach is precisely the way same-sex marriage MUST happen.
Under Federalism and a representative government, this has to be the way these issues move forward.
NOT by judicial fiat and violating laws of the nation you don’t agree with.
So yes, I’m happy for the Vermont decision today.

Let us hope that this will end the gay left’s attempts at achieving same-sex marriage via the courts.
Of course, I won’t hold my breath.

The above comments seemingly fail to grasp the conundrum. If the majority is willing to treat you equally in the law, there is no need for the Courts.

Congratulations to Vermont and its residents…super proud of their Legislature!!

*sigh* Tommy, you are treated equally, you just don’t like it.
As I posted above, I’m glad to see the privilege of recognized partnerships extended to same sex couples, through the will of the people, not the tyrany of the minority. Personally I’d prefer the construction of ‘Fred’, but I’m willing to accept the societal change.

Livewire
Huh? How would you know how I am treated?
As for my preference, I don’t think marraige should be a state issue, civil unions for everyone is the way to go.

Now if we can just get that full faith and credit thing worked out.

how do I know?
You can marry one (1) person subject to the state’s requirements, which can include gender, age or (in MA) being able to marry that person in your home state.
The same as everyone else.

You still haven’t answered how you know how I am treated?
Comment by Tommy — April 7, 2009 @ 2:12 pm - April 7, 2009
Do you live in some part of the country where the above conditions apply? DC maybe, where you choose to live in a district and not a state?
Then my point proves itself.

Tommy, if your hysterical responses aren’t indicative enough, I’d say you were treated pretty badly. And still are.

It’s about time the Vermont maples showed the gays some sugar. And they did it legislatively rather than through the courts. The Tunbridge Soil Series State gets a gold star for that. :O)
