Sitting in my Tax Guy’s Office

April 14, 2009 by GayPatriotWest

Well, I’m delighted to learn that the guy who’s been doing my taxes for the past nine years is a Republican.  And thanks to my wireless card, I could live-blog my experience here.

Suffice it to say, he’s doing all the work. It helped that during the year, I made sure to put any document which might be relevant to my taxes into a folder I keep on my desk. Sorted through that last night and have just been handing documents to my guy as he requests them.

I’ve been wondering if maybe we should change the name of April 15th to “Federal Extortion Day” (FED).

Now, to “extort” means “to obtain from a person by force, intimidation, or undue or illegal power.”  While the IRS’s power is not illegal, it does sometimes seem undue.

So, here’s a song for the day (to the tune of “Christmas Tree:”

  • Extortion Day
  • Extortion Day
  • Oh hate I the feds today
  • They spend and spend
  • They take my money away
  • They waste our income
  • They waste it every day
  • Extortion Day
  • Extortion Day
  • Oh how I hate the Feds today

Bruce, I am having a hard time deciding which name is best, I think that I vote for Etortion Day.

Also you wrote – ”While the IRS’s power is not illegal…”

Perhaps not illegal, but certainly Unconstitutional, the latter being more importnat in my opinon!

Oy vey, not again… Among others, Justices Rehnquist and Scalia disagree(d) with you.

Dan, as for the song… it’s catchy. You should start humming it and see what your tax guy thinks. 😉

Unconstitutional? Nobody asked me if I wanted a Form 1040, that’s for damn sure.

Extortion Day is an excellent term! I don’t mind paying the taxes that are necessary to provide the basic services, but I resent that they are no longer proportional and that the largesse is used to keep corrupt pols entrenched.

My push back this year was with the State of CA. We live here but are not residents. The expansion of government entitlements here in relationship to other states continues to blow me away. The economy where we live is in free fall and the tax base is eroding, so rather than reduce spending and pare back to ensure essential services were maintained, they raised the local sales tax to 9.25% from 7%. I did what I could to keep my contribution to the state here to the bare minimum — I buy almost everything online from out-of-state, including my car, so I don’t have to pay sales tax to CA. Not sure what the alternatives will be when they close this loophole. Fortunately, we’re leaving CA for a more conservative state this July when my spouse’s work assignment is up.

Given the size of the Teleprompter’s deficits, maybe “piss in the ocean” day is more appropriate.

And speaking of how painful it is to watch the Dear One without his Teleprompter.

Can I just add a line,
Oh how I hate the Feds, the State, the city… today.
Looks like eveyone has their hands in our pockets.

You’d have a lot more credibility on this topic if you had complained about government spending when Republicans were running the show.

    [We did.]

    Dan, taxes, taxes, taxes.

For the last 14 years in our organization, I’ve allowed the employees to take holiday on our (Ann Arbor, Michigan) “Tax Freedom Day”. That’s the day when an employee’s entire prior wages of the year have been sufficient to take care of his/her federal, state and local tax (income, personal, property tax) debt for the year.

This year we’ve pegged that date as May 9th. Literally, we work nearly 1/2 the frickin’ year just to pay government taxes.

It is obscene. And some Democrats don’t “get” the Tea Party concept? Gheesh.

Dan – better watch yourself…. you could wind up on the DHS list or extreme right wing terrorists or whatever!

#9: for the last 8 years, rank and file CONSERVATIVES (not the same thing as Republicans) have been complaining to anyone who would listen about runaway spending. Have you not been paying attention?
