Pentagon: No Plan To End DADT

May 19, 2009 by GayPatriot

I’m blogging from the Ft. Lauderdale airport and a report just came over Twitter from a gay media organization. I’m hoping one of my co-bloggers can find out more.

But the gist is that the Defense Department says there are no plans to end the “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” policy.

GP readers: Feel free to link the articles in the comment section if you find out more…

So… “Hope and Change”?

Or more empty Obama promises to The Gays?

What puzzles me about the report is that IT IS NOT UP TO THE MILITARY to do anything about DADT. It is up to the Congress and the President. They set DADT, and only they can change it.

Thus, the report smells a bit fishy; perhaps it is a bit of CYA on the part of Democrats and/or the Dear Teleprompter to cover the fact that they are going to do nothing about DADT. I.e., making it sound like the policy decision is somehow out of their hands, or somehow the fault of the military if they don’t change it. I don’t know; just speculation.

ILC (#3)- Yes I was going to mention that too, but wasn’t 100% sure. Since Clinton codified so many anti-gay laws…it is hard to keep track.

Sorry this is outside the thread….
Is there something in the water in Washinton DC? The entire Democrat Party is a DAILY GAFFE MACHINE. So much so that it is hard to keep up with the embarrassing mistakes made by these boobs.
Obama Pelosi Reid take your pick. And the MSM is finally starting to report it….

Only Congress can end DADT, but maybe the military has to provide the cover/rationale so Congress will go along. Apparently, Obama and/or Congress doesn’t want to take the lead, thus his or their political capital will be damaged.

I would like the cowards move on this issue despite the problems associated.

I do think DADT is a bad policy. Gays should serve our military without the threat of discharge, but I wonder what the best policy is?

Maybe in practical political terms, yes. But that is just another way of saying that the Democrats are gutless on gay issues.

I think we’re on the same page and agree with the rest of your comment. I could accept DADT if they honored the “DP” (Don’t Pursue) part that Clinton promised as part of the bargain. Discharges of good (and badly needed) people have been too high under DADT as currently implemented.

Since Obama and the Democrats in Congress are cowards, why don’t the Republicans take the lead and push to end DADT? Yes, I understand they are the minority power now, but I would love to see them push the issue and watch the Democrats in Congress and Obama rebuff them. How about it?

Why, exactly, should the Republican Party do something for a group of people who compare them to Nazis, who try to destroy their members, and who have never supported them anyway?

#9-10: Besides which, I wouldn’t put it past the GayLeftLibs to try and demonize the GOP for even attempting to try and end DADT, probably by saying that the Republicans had “ulterior motives” for pursuing such policy.

That’s where they’d drag out their now-refuted “gay concentration camps” excuse.

    Can’t win for losing.

    Peter H.

PS – Leah, I totally agree with your comment!

Because it’s the right thing to do, NDT.

I get your point here, but we can agree that not all gay people are representative of your above premise. Especially those gay people who are qualified and willing to serve. Furthermore, there are gay conservative individuals and now a group, GOProud that supports the end of DADT. Just as HRC should go after Obama and the Democrats in Congress to get DADT repealed, it seems to me that GOProud should also urge Republicans in Congress to get DADT repealed.

Besides which, I wouldn’t put it past the GayLeftLibs to try and demonize the GOP for even attempting to try and end DADT, probably by saying that the Republicans had “ulterior motives” for pursuing such policy.

Peter, that’s fine. Let the “GayLeftLibs” try it.

Silly faygela, the Democrats are saving DADT and ENDA for the 2012 campaign…errr, I mean the 2010 campaign…to wave as a bloody-shirt and raise more millions from the mindless masses. “Give us more unaccountable millions or-else those nasty GOP’ers will tale away your rights…” **giggle, giggle**

Always remember, it’s not a carrot-and-stick…it’s a carrot hanging from a stick out in front of the donkey that keeps it moving…..

Cowards? hmmm…..Bush and congress had 6 years of full control to end it. Why didn’t they? (oh, right, it was Bill Clinton’s fault and there was absolutely nothing Bush and company could do to reverse those policies) It isn’t the defense department[s decision anyway and I still have faith this will come through during President Obama’s first term.

Scream and jeer as much as you like, but history has shown that Democrats have outraced Republicans (esp in the last 40+ years) in making sure we have the same rights as all other US citizens.

    Kevin-

Wrong, it is not DoD’s decision. Congress must change it. Just like they must change DOMA which Bill Clinton signed.

So while the Democrats had 40+ years of giving everyone else rights (according to you), they left gays out in the cold — and continue to do so.

    Idiot.

Clinton’s DADT is actually worse policy than the previous one. Good intentions sometimes fail. I would like there to be a policy to fix it, but it can’t be quick fix. It has to be properly argued and endorse by the military. No ram down.

There is no upside for the Republicans to take the initiative. Republicans won’t get any political benefit from gays, in the same way they didn’t benefit from illegal alien amnesty. There will also be a split within their own caucus. Some Republicans won’t be for it. You can’t expect consensus on a difficult subject especially with all the gay marriage stuff going on right now. Gay marriage and DADT will be a double whammy for nervous politicians.

That’s why I think Democrats should take the hit. It’s really their baby. Always was. DADT was on their watch. They can fix it.

I think TV and movies have done more to advance gay rights and acceptance than any Democrat motivated by power.
