My New Favorite Republican Governor

May 22, 2009 by GayPatriotWest

(Who was incidently my pick for McCain’s running mate last year.)

Tim Pawlenty stands up for conservative principles the Land of Ten Thousand Lakes.  And so prevents Democrats from worsening the recession in MinnesOta.

You do know that he has raised taxes, and uses budget tricks to fill the gap don’t you?

Or perhaps you didn’t actually look at his record/bills

Hate to say this, but Gillie is right. Pawlenty has a few issues I really don’t care for. . . that said, if it was between him and all the other dems, no contest. I’ll put up with Tim’s bad side to get rid of Obama. Bush had some of the same issues as Tim, and I’m happy he won over Gore and Kerry, that’s for sure.

I have not been successful in figuring out where Pawlenty stands. I am not much interested in a Tom Ridge brand of Republican. They have to shovel too much steam for my comfort.

Pawlenty is too much like Bush on Amnesty and too much like McCain on ManBearPig for my liking. We put up with Bush’s mushy conservatism-lite for eight years and what did it get us?

As a Minnesotan, I am a big Pawlenty fan. I respect those of the opinion that Pawlenty isn’t conservative enough, but Minnesota isn’t like Alabama or Idaho or Texas. I wish we were as red a state as those places, but we just are not. Gov. Pawlenty barely held on to win reelection in 2006, a very bad year for the GOP both in Minnesota and nationwide. The political reality of Minnesota is that you do need to reach out to people in the middle. After all, this is the only state that has never voted for a Republican president in my lifetime. People in other states may think it would have been better as a matter of principle for the GOP to have lost the 2006 MN gubernatorial election with a more conservative candidate, but you’re not the ones that would have to pay the higher taxes I would be paying right now if Mike Hatch were governor.

Really, what has Gov. Pawlenty done that is so horribly liberal? Sorry, I’m really not too upset that cigarette taxes are higher. We’ve had some other taxes go up, but those we’re vetoed by him and then overridden.

Regardless of how he might have been squishy on some things in the past, what he’s done recently with the Minnesota state budget is awesome and courageous. If other people want to complain about this or that regarding Gov. Pawlenty, great. But as someone deeply rooted in Minnesota and with a huge stake in Minnesota’s future, I for one stand up and salute for Gov. Pawlenty for taking a bold stand against higher taxes and bigger government.
