I was there last night, too, and I thought Will was outstanding. He spoke at length, and, I think, anyone willing to listen would be able to understand him. On TV, unfortunately, there's no time to actually engage in ideas, and Will suffers for that. I thought he gave such a great speech last night that one could almost make an argument for him as heir to WF Buckley . . . well, almost . . .

Thanks for the insightful review...(now, will all commenters start guessing the name of the boyfriend??)

I've been a big fan of Will's for a quarter century or more.
He's made a few missteps, such as secretlly penning Republican speeches while working as a journalist.
It's possible for him to be wrong, even dunderheaded, at times, limited by his tendency to effete establishmentarianism, although he gamely fights it.
Saying that the lawyerly closing of playgrounds drove kids indoors is silly; it's the other way around: the devilish attractions of food and video delights turn kids into donkeyboys.
Look at all the expensive playgrounds sitting empty all around you, George.
And his worst, most wrong-headed column was this spring when he condemned the wearing of blue jeans by American males.
While I take his general point that slovenly dress bespeaks slovenly manners and society, there are few things more American - and more useful and good looking - than blue jeans.
Will's standard that no man should wear anything Fred Astaire would not have worn is weird and dunderheaded and way less American than having a few pairs of well-worn jeans in your closet.
I'd knock your glasses off, push you down on the playground and rub your face in the dirt for that column, Georgey Boy. Intellectually speaking, of course.
Otherwise, hail Weezer, the greatest columnist of our time.

Hey! Wish I'd known you were going to be there. I would have sought you out to say hello. My wife doesn't love these dinners, so I brought an old newspaper friend -- somebody who had read the Claremont Review of Books for awhile -- and he enjoyed the hell out of it.

A couple of comments about the comments:

"Like many more establishment conservative thinkers, I think Will was too eager to believe the 'historic' election of Obama would be something other than what the plebs were warning."

I don't think that's quite correct. Will was never taken in by the Obama hype, but he has been a long-time critic of McCain and wrote eloquently and passionately against McCain's encroachments on freedom of speech through "campaign finance reform." Will understood, as few observers did, that the 2008 election was a contest between statists. The difference was one of degree.

"I think it’s telling that George Will continues to participate by appearing on MSM but has not appeared on Fox News."

Remember, Will is a contributor and employee of ABC News. He's had a long relationship with ABC. But he has appeared on Fox News. Here's one such appearance: http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,363723,00.html

GPW,

I too have been a fan of George Will for many years. His commentary helped me hone my conservative arguments but have found him nearly non existent since Obama came to prominence.

I think it's telling that George Will continues to participate by appearing on MSM but has not appeared on Fox News.

I would think he has been an invited guest many times but may think his status with MSM is more important.

I am not willing to take Will back just yet.

More, now than ever, George Will has a fair outlet to express his views and share his extensive experience.

Will is intelligent, but I think his love of language gets the better of him and makes his commentary inscrutable to those who would most benefit from the points he makes. On TV, he comes across as dull and negative -- and that's likely why he is on TV. I appreciate any non-leftist, non-statist voice, but he's never going to convert anyone to his cause beyond the details about which conservatives already endlessly argue.

I was wrong to suggest that George Will’s best days were behind him. Perhaps, I was overly critical of him because I did not find such a defense of conservative ideas in his campaign columns as I have in his recent writings and as I did last night.
