I hope you will read my 6/22 post explaining why what Letterman did was mobbing and that is why he must be fired. The sponsor targeted for action today is Johnson & Johnson. Also, I hope you will post your own thoughts not only on this campaign, which must be won, but also on what is going to happen to us in the future if every bully can rely on our short attention span and hopelessness to prevail. The NY Daily News is reporting a massive protest planned – probably already taking place – in front of Letterman’s studio today:

Even in liberal NYC, the Palin joke was beyond the pale – if you look at some of the comments at the bottom of the story. Maybe ol’ Dave misunderestimated his comments and how they would be perceived.

Do any of you really think CBS isn’t just pleased as punch with all this attention, particularly if it reminds its/their audience why they should be grateful Obama is in office instead of letting that white trash grace the USNO, now that poll numbers aren’t what they used to be? Letterman doesn’t write this stuff and CBS is the network of Rather and Cronkite. The only thing that amuses me is the shock and horror at the remark because it indicates some still expect better treatment. It was entirely scripted and in character.

I came to TV consciousness being informed and entertained by the likes of Walter Cronkite, Red Skelton, and Burns and Allen.
If the best your network representative can come up is “Sorry, I meant to slime the 18 year old – not her 14 year old sister”, you are so below that standard.
I won’t be joining the demonstrations today. I’ll be calling your sponsors.
Remember: The sincerity of an apology and the humor of a joke are inversely related to the need for an explanation. (As well as the number of attempts you need to get them right.)

I think pushing for Letterman to be fired crosses the line into nasty bullying. Expressing extreme displeasure at what he said, and then not watching his show may be more useful, I think.

Absolutely….. I am a Don Imus fan and was horrified when he was foired for what they had paid him (specifically in his contract) to do. And he sued CBS and WON!!!!
What David Letterman did was beyond belief and he should be fired or at least taken off air for several months.

I’ll continue the boycott. As a woman, I take great offense to any kind of “joke” that involves rape. I’m sure those that think it’s no big deal, how would you feel if your young daughter came home and told you one of her teachers made a joke about her being raped?

It is unnacceptable, period. The pedophile should be fired and if not, the network can suffer the huge monetary lose as a result of the child molesters comment

I agree 100% on all the points in the quoted sentences. For the record, I’m not going to lift a finger for any campaign to get Letterman fired. Only (and maybe) campaigns to point out that (1) he’s an ass, and yet (2) really the least of the malice and double standards that the Left harbors.

I thought people on the right had thicker skins than those on the left. I’m no longer quite sure this is true.

Yes, it’s interesting to point out the hypocracy of the left. But, unfortunately, especially in the case of women, the right is starting to sound like a bunch of Betty Freidan wannabes.

P.S. And, it’s wonderful that at least some feminists are finally defending Sarah Palin against sexism. 8 months too late… Palin took some much worse, more ugly sexism during the campaign, and most feminists were no where to be found. But let’s be grateful that some have come around.

In Letterman’s on-air apology (direct link here: http://www.tvweek.com/blogs/tvbizwire/2009/06/dave-i-take-full-responsibilty.php – thank you Leah ), I still detect a lot of half-assed “I’m sorry for the way those people all took it” type of language. But hey, at least Dave did say words roughly like “I told a really bad joke” and “I’ve been thinking about it all week”. I bet that’s the longest he’s ever thought about one of his bad jokes.
