The Gays & Iran — Why No Emotion?

Aside from Andrew Sullivan and Michael Petrelis, The Gays(tm) have been stunningly silent on the Iranian election.  Almost as silent and stand-offish as President Obama has been.

While I haven’t blogged about it (admittedly), I have been Twittering my ass off throughout the weekend on the subject!  After all, shouldn’t gays be MORE invested in the outcome of Iran’s future than almost anyone?  They hang gays there after all.

Frank Fleming made an excellent observation on Twitter over the weekend:

You’d think liberals could put at least half the anger they aim at Prop 8 supporters towards someone who has executed gay people.

Amen.  It is the big inconvenient truth for The Gays(tm).  Life in America for us is ashamedly better than nearly every other country on earth.  But there always has to be something for The Gays(tm) to attack America and Christians about so they can raise money to keep themselves going.

More evidence of the left’s success!

  2. On further thought, it is quite ironic and I’d be remiss in saying that one of the best countries on Earth for gays is…. drumroll…. Israel.

Yet who do the American Gays side with in their protests? Palestinian terrorists.

And they call ME self-loathing! ROFL.

  3. I think it has something to do with their general viewpoint. We as humans can’t understand another country’s situation and culture without being able to compare it to our own. That’s fine, but it can sometimes descend into only seeing foreign politics as extensions of domestic politics.

So many (not all) on the Left will support the Palestinians as a way of showing their dissatisfaction with Western culture and with the US in particular, the consequences for the people actually involved be damned. The Israelis are just too Western for their tastes. They’ll become more riled about gay marriage than legal, state sanctioned murders for homosexuality because to admit that the latter is worse (ie. that Iran is worse than the US) would be to admit that conservatives have got something right and have some valid points.

  4. It’s got a lot to do with proximity. A murder in my neighborhood greatly impacts my life, but the murder rate in, say, Detroit or D.C. is at best an abstraction.

Same thing here: A person opposed to Prop 8 sees it as immediately impacting their lives in a meaningful and tangible way, while gay rights (or women’s rights, or religious rights) in a country halfway around the world doesn’t intrude that much into our day-to-day lives.

I’m not giving them a free pass, but it is a part of the human condition that the mote in our eye is MUCH more important than the plank is someone else’s eye.

Is that a typo? Not saying it is; I can assign a valid meaning to it “as written”, like:
    1) It’s shameful how some other countries (Iran) treat gays;
    2) We should be ashamed that we have such petty outrage in this country, when in fact our gay life is great.

  7. I have been quite critical of Obama lately, but I don’t find this any more awful than our presidents who have said little or nothing regarding other dictatorships, even when countries are our sort of allies. This includes King Abdullah, who gets his hand held by or is bowed to by our presidents. So, this is just another unfortunate event of which there is no shortage of. Yes, Iran is a dictatorship that is disguising itself as a democracy. They just haven’t perfected the art of making a false election count look legitimate.

I imagine Obama, Democrats in Congress, and Republicans will be forming some position regarding this. They just have to figure out what it is, and make it sound authentic as opposed to something for political gain. Yeah, I’m pretty cynical now.

Pat, no disrespect intended, but if you’re still at a stage where you believe Obama and the Democrats will be “forming some position” with the participation or input of Republicans, you have about 67 or 68 stops to go before you hit cynical.

I live in Texas, and damn if I can figure how how Prop 8 affects me.

    Here’s a clue: IT DOESN’T.

  14. I can’t believe gays don’t get it, yet. Leftists will throw you over the side in a heartbeat, once they discover that embracing Islam gives them the strongest club to beat Christians and Jews with (the rock-bottom driving motive of leftism being precisely this). Right now the “gay marriage” issue is useful to them for this purpose. But once leftists discover that the Real Juice for kickin’ Christian/Jewish ass is Islamic Sharia, the gays are finished.

Oh, it’ll take awhile for that to happen, but note carefully: leftists never stand up strongly for gays in Islamic countries. Just as they never stand up for women’s rights there, either. What does that tell you about their real priorities?

  18. just a comment here: Despite the fact that Sullivan is a real ass most of the time, he has been doing a great job with the Iran commentary.

Two others need special mention: Michael Totten and Huffington Post. I am not a normal reading of Huffington Post, but the work being done by one reporter is great. Also check out Pajamas TV for more up to the minute news. I found some good Iranian blogs in English with detailed information and lots of video footage and photos.

The Iranian women are doing great, and they really want their freedom.

As for your President…… does he have any balls?
