Republicans and conservatives spend too much time feeling sorry for themselves. hy do you love casting yourselves as a Victim Class?

You just love to run outside, weeping and pounding the sidewalk, saying "Poor Sarah Palin!" "Poor Rush Limbaugh!"

Letterman is not sorry he made a joke about Sarah Palin. He is sorry that she used his joke to accuse him of being a child molester.

I think Palin is a blabbermouth and I hated to see her use Willow's name and attribute all sorts of things to Willow that undermined whatever case she may have had that her children are off limits.

Palin is a clown, unfortunately, a Bill and Hillary class pathological liar and you are most welcome to her.

You know, AE, the only people describing the Palin and the right’s response to Letterman as “Rage” are the left-wingers who are defending him.
You caught me! I'm a huge left-winger.
I think the response to Letterman’s attack on the children of a political opponent has been measured and appropriate.
I disagree. I think aspects of the response have been over the top.

I think its perfectly right and just to denounce the jokes as mean spirited and out of order. I think its perfectly appropriate to do so loudly and incessantly, but I also think everyone knows that the butt of the joke about being knocked up was the daughter who, just coincidentally, was recently "knocked up".

I am no fan of Letterman, and have been a big Palin supporter as any search of my blog or this blog's comments will show, but I think Sarah knew damn well he was trying to make fun of Bristol, but she thought she could score some points by suggesting he knew he was talking about a 14 year old. I was very disappointed in her for that. Its the first dishonest thing Ive seen her do, and I don't like it. Part of the reason I liked her is because I didnt think she would do such things. Thats how Democrats behave, not Republicans.

What she should have done is said, "look, I understand he was trying to trash my 19 year old daughter, but when did that become acceptable? What has my 19 year old daughter done to warrant such humiliating, vitriolic attacks by one of the biggest talk show hosts on TV? When did it become okay to trash the children of political candidates? I'm sure Sasha and Malia Obama would be interested to know."

I also thought her call for people to "rise up" was an extremely poor and unfortunate choice of words. I've never heard a politician call for people to rise up in defense of them before. Can you imagine Ronald Reagan calling on people to "rise up" against attacks on Nancy or Ron? It made her look weak, as though she cant fight her own battles, and it made her look calculating and opportunistic and has caused me to question her integrity and judgment.

Even in accepting his apology, she tried to get a dig in. It was ungracious. I want politicians who act better than that. I expect Republican politicians to behave better than Democrats, not like them. She came very close to making the bad guy look more gracious than her.

Letterman says he did research after being handed the joke to make sure Bristol was 18 years old.

Who here believes that? Who here can picture Letterman holding up a hand at the run through saying, "Hold on, hold on... can someone look up how old Bristol is and make sure she's 18 so we can make this joke about A-Rod knocking her up?"

Right... yeah... sure he did. The whole apology was a lie from front to back.

Our "perception" and "misunderstanding" are the problem, he said. And no, he wasn't wrong.

(How does one tell that joke -- or one of its ilk -- 'right?'"

Let's move on, as they say. You're not going to get anything else from him.

I want to know where the flight attendants' union is. You know -- a short statement addressing the bigoted slanderous B grade movie Letterman version of flight attendants.
The fact that he milked this for a couple days to get his ratings ahead of Conan's during sweeps makes Letterman and his writers poster children for exploiters in so many ways.

BTW --Didn't he have the crew of the Hudson plane on? Did he mention to the heroic flight attendants that they were part of a slutty profession? Did any of them look like his model slutty flight attendant?

If I were a flight attendant on his next flight I'd spill a drink on him. Oh. Wait. He probably never flies commercial. Too busy saving the planet.

Also, no one is talking about the Spitzer joke which, if anything, is worse as it presumes whatever young Palin at hand is a whore. Could this be aimed at young Trig?

Here's one for Letterman's next show... should balance the scales a little bit. "Ya know, the other evening the President and his lovely wife were in town for a show [APPLAUSE]... yes, and they ran into a little trouble. Seems the President ran out at intermission and fellated his chauffeur for crack." [LAUGHTER/APPLAUSE]

Although Letterman makes a belated second "apology," there's still a double standard here. If a conservative (think Hannity, Beck or O'Reilly) said something like this about the minor child of a Democrat, he would be fired after a media outcry. Why does Letterman get a pass? It's time CBS fires him. Over at hillbuzz.org, they are keeping the pressure on the sponsors.

"you simply turn him off and don’t listen to or watch his show."

Letterman is a little different, he's more of a NYC tourist attraction than a CBS money maker; Bloomy won't let Dave go.

It’s not “rage” that folks feel for Letterman. The proper word is “contempt”.
To a certain kind of lefty, it's the same thing. If you feel contempt for him, you're hurting his (false) "self-esteem", and that in turn means you must be a psycho who hates him. Then he feels rage. And since there is no psychological boundary or difference between you and he - i.e., he is the center of the universe - then it must be you who are feeling the rage, as well as being The Source of All Rage.

Letterman appears to think that we were outraged because we misunderstood the “joke”. In fact, the outrage rises from a correct understanding of what Letterman said.
Exactly. Letterman's explanation in apology 2.0 was that he delivered the joke badly. Like it would have been OK, if only he hadn't screwed up the delivering. That's the same defense John "I Was In Vietnam" Kerry tried to use a few years back, when he openly tried to insult our Iraq troops as stupid. A video replay (or transcript) exposes the explanation as a lie.

Kudos to Sarah, she is a true lady. But I've now watched the clip. Looked to me that it was so painful and hard for Letterman to do.

Now if he would simply disappear into the ether, that would be nice.

It was gracious of Sarah Palin to accept apology 2.0. But let's face it: it was not an apology. Letterman appears to think that we were outraged because we misunderstood the "joke". In fact, the outrage rises from a correct understanding of what Letterman said. If anything, his earlier "apology", saying that he was talking about Bristol, not Willow, suggests that he himself misunderstood that joke.

Which part of "slutty flight attendant" did we misunderstand?

To blame the outrage on the audience's misunderstanding, even if he says that means he told a "bad joke", is still to blame the audience.

Perhaps apology 3.0 will be less buggy.

Letterman made the A-Rod joke last Monday, when it was possible to believe he and his writers were too lazy to check and see which Palin daughter was at the game.

But he made the Elliott Spitzer joke on Tuesday, after criticism of Monday's two jokes (the other being the "Slutty flight attendant" one) already had started coming in. So in the case of the second joke, it's not that Letterman didn't know the 14-year-old was at t he game, it's that he didn't care to find out 24 hours after the fact if the reports Willow was at the Yankees game were true, or he did know and blew it off, figuring that all the people who were really important at CBS and in the liberal entertainment community had his back on this, and he could make all the jokes he wanted about the Palins and never get into trouble.

It's not "rage" that folks feel for Letterman. The proper word is "contempt". There's no need to urge that Letterman get fired; you simply turn him off and don't listen to or watch his show. Since advertising dollars are what keeps that old has been before the camera, you turn off the advertising dollars and Letterman will ultimately be gone.

I mean that's the theory. The fact is that Letterman hasn't been funny--or worth watching--for a long time.
