Reading about the President’s myriad broken promises in my post yesterday on the subject, reader Jana alerts our readers to Allahpundit’s post on the “thunderous applause” the Democrat received when he welcomed gay activists to the White House to celebrate the 40th anniversary of the Stonewall uprising. I’m sure HRC’s, the ever obsequious (when it comes to Democrats) Joe Solmonese was among those clapping the loudest.
Despite some gay left bloggers daring to criticize a Democratic President, it seems a good number of gay activists remained enamored with the incumbent, perhaps due to his left-wing credentials or that (D) after his name which, for many gay leftists, is the equivalent of a “Get out of Jail Free” card, excusing a politician of misdeeds and broken promises.
This applause shows that all too many gay activists will give the benefit of the doubt to Democrats. For them, left-wing ideology and partisan loyalty seem more important than integrity on gay issues and a record of achievement. They’re partisans first. So, bear that in mind when they criticize us of being “self-hating” for not toeing the liberal line and supporting the Democratic Party.
At least, we, consistent with the ideals of modern American conservatism, have the sense to expect little of our politicians on gay issues. They mask their partisan fidelity in the Democrats’ supposed commitment to gay people.
No thunderous applause from this gay Democrat on these issues. I’ll start applauding again once actions are put in place. Having recognition of gay pride month has huge meaning, but again, real actions will speak louder than words.
I thought it was a good example of his “cocktail party” strategy.
He won’t actually *do* anything that doesn’t fit into his plan, but he’ll cover himself by pointing out that he invited them over to the house for drinks. Is it his fault if everyone else won’t play nice?
I am a pro-life gay. Not only do I not see Obama doing anything for gays, he’s not doing anything for the unborn. Like my fellow conservative, Bush, I support guest worker passes for immigrants based on the Biblical injunction to welcome the stranger and outcast–the same injunction which underlies my call for churches to be inclusive of gays. I don’t see Obama welcoming the undocumented worker, either. I also don’t see protections being put in place so that the old are not simply shuffled off to die, but are given the dignity and value that other countries, such as Iran give the elderly (notice that it was the elderly who set themselves up as shields in the recent protests). Nor has Obama, even with a Democratic majority, found a way to insure the uninsured. As a Christian who follows a social theology much like the one the Pope expresses in his most recent encyclical, I expected a fellow Christian like Obama to work more on behalf of the unborn, the gay, the undocumented, the elderly, and the uninsured. But I’m not seeing it.
“For them, left-wing ideology and partisan loyalty seem more important than integrity on gay issues and a record of achievement. They’re partisans first.”
You are exactly right. Nothing can come between a liberals and advancing the democrat party.
#1 Kevin, is that you? Or is there suddenly a 2nd Kevin posing as the first Kevin? I find it ironic that Obama “invited” some gays over to the White House. Reminds me of the times when “white” people invited “Negroes” over to the house so they wouldnt feel like they were racist. However, substantially symbolic accounts for absolutely nothing!!! The learning curve of those in attendance at this “meaningless” gathering must be very, very low.
Ashpenaz said it all. I think he is my long-lost twin.
He is a Christian just like he is a moderate centrist. He lied about both.
I love the cocktail analogy. It really saddens me that that is all he has to do, throw a party at the White House and all is forgiven, and this on the day that SGT. Choi goes in front of the military board.
That would be the prefect place to show he really means it.
As every day passes I dislike this man more and more.
I just wish he had the backbone to do something, even something I disagree with. He’s so tepid and timid. There doesn’t seem to be any plan or any agenda. Even if I disagreed with him on healthcare, if he just decided what he wanted and pushed it through, I could at least respect him. He doesn’t even have to push. He’s popular and he has both houses–what does he want? He could end DADT just because he has the power to do it–the military would respect that. But dithering and doddering is not respected by anyone.
Read his speech at the event, he never uses the word “freedom”.
He uses ‘discrimination’ six.
Phrases like this tell you he sees himself as the gatekeeper to your
natural God given freedom.
“It’s not for me to tell you to be patient”
“We have made progress and we will make more”
“By the time this administration is over, I think you guys will have pretty good feelings about the Obama administration”
so let me get this straight, ash…you’re blaming obama for not getting healthcare reform that covers everyone through? so you’re brushing aside the fact that the congress is currently working on this legislation and that the republicans are the ones (and a few democrats) who are vehemently opposed to any public option whatsover? if obama had his way, we would have a public option. the thing is, ash, we have this thing called congress, and we need them to vote on legislation too. we’re not in a dictatorship.
i used to just feel bad for you, but now after your comment comparing gays to al qaeda and this post’s insane reasoning…i don’t even know what to say about you.
oh, and one more thing. i think someone needs to point out the contradiction here. ash and many other critics (and liberals) are accusing the president of being too “tepid”, too “timid”, and too concerned about getting republicans on board instead of just getting the votes he needs and moving on. however, gpw has been on a crusade lately accusing obama of being the most hyperpartisan president EVER or some batshit crazy statement like that. i’m hoping i don’t need to explain how these sentiments appear to contradict one another.
is he compromising too much, ash, or is he just blindly partisan, gpw? why don’t you two discuss that. kthxbye.
bob, there’s no contradiction,
President Obama follows the path with the least effort to get the most power. The ‘Gay Left’ just proved they’re a cheep date.
You want a public option? Fine. Answer me this. If public insurance is so good why are the Fed Employees (including the house and senate) on a private plan? If the government can handle it so well, why is Tricare looking at two private carriers to administer it?
And why will union members be exempt from having to accept government health care?
Gays are quickily becoming blacks, where they will vote liberal Democrat no matter what. There is a downside to that- see the condition of blacks in our nation (according to statistical data). Voting liberal Democrat comes with its own rewards.
Wow! What a concept. A gay plantation. Quick, redo Gone With the Wind as a gay musical. The scene at the Obama White House cocktail party should be memorable. And all the special loopdy-loop lapel ribbons signifying Democrat gay pride can be a wonderful song as one dejected gay finds true happiness being courted by the plantation overseers. Meanwhile, the gay conservative chumps out in the fields just keep on keepin’ on.
>Gays are quickily becoming blacks
Spot on
It’s even worse with us transsexuals.
The trans left holds rallies that look like textbook Al Sharpton.
And why will union members be exempt from having to accept government health care?
**************************************************
Not only that but if Obama decides to tax employer paid health care benefits, unions will be exempt. Is that an underhanded way of promoting unions or what?
I liked the comment of why this stuff is coming so fast and furious. He is trying to ram it through before he loses his support.
Crap-n-Rob, is such a sham. Interesting that he has put the “gays” at the back of the bus. Just saying “Good Morning” to them as they enter the bus seems to be good enough. Then they blindly go to the back seat.
Thunderour Applause, …ahh yes. I’ll just remind of fellow Patriots of the “other” similarily-memorable tag-line, “So this is how Democracy dies, to thunderous applause.”
With the DC Gay ATM Cocktails-set as the Senate…And Barney Franks as Jar-Jar Binks.
I hear Obama played ABBA’s “Dancing Queen” during the festivities. How sensitive of him! That almost makes up for everything else.

This single statement horrifies me:
“At least, we, consistent with the ideals of modern American conservatism, have the sense to expect little of our politicians on gay issues.”
GayPatriotWest, how can you wish to stay consistent with the ideals of “modern American conservatism?”
#20,
I’d assume it’s for the same reason that “consistent with the ideas of modern American conservatism” I don’t expect the goverment to declare a ‘straight awareness month’
The government doesn’t have any business in my choice of bedmates..
Dear The_Livewire,
So long as the gov’t has business in my taxes, freedoms, and rights based on my choice of bedmates, I certainly DO expect action. That’s my opinion on the matter, FWIW.
But your response does not address my questions: why not expect more from your representatives? Why hold to conservative values when it means denying yourself rights and privileges?
Um, because every privilege should not be offered by the Government?? Or taken?
