To Quiet the Birthers, Obama Needs Release his Birth Certificate

As a sign that discussion of  “birthers” claims that the President was not been born in the United States has reached feverit pitch, the House of Representatives earlier this week “unanimously passed a resolution stating that Obama was born in Hawaii.”  Echoing David Kuhn, blogging law professor William Jacobson believes “discussion of the birth certificate issue has exploded in the past month, pushed mostly by Obama supporters as part of a political tactic against Republicans.

It seems that tactic has failed.  Unanimous passage of a House resolution means no Republicans voted against this resolution.  A slightly higher percentage of Democrats did not vote on the measure than did Republicans.

Over the past few months, I have talked to quite a few “birthers” and while not sharing their skepticism about the place of Obama’s birth, I am impressed with their awareness of the “missing” evidence.  Yet, just because evidence is missing does not mean it’s not there. (And in this case, it’s not missing, just not publicly available.)  I believe Barack Obama was indeed born in the United States and has met the constitutional requirements to serve as President (whether he has the qualities to govern effectively is another issue altogether).

A House vote is not likely to satisfy the birthers.  To them, the evidence is still missing.  The only way to quiet their drum beat would be for the President to authorize the release of his birth certificate.  After all, didn’t he promise a new era of unprecedented transparency when he took office?

Bloggers across the political spectrum are in accord with conservative Bob Owens who echoes the HuffingtonPost‘s Mark Joseph in urging the President to release the certificate:

Officials in Hawaii have confirmed that the original, long-form paper birth certificate filled out at the time of President Obama’s birth exists. The President can easily ask them to release a copy of the document to the media to be photographed at high resolution, where it can be posted on news web sites and blogs around the word and debated and parsed, ultimately shutting down all but the most fringe elements of the debate, those that still believe that 9/11 was an inside job and that Ron Paul would have made a good President.

It only takes a phone call. Do this, Mr. President.

The President has it within his power to quiet this minor media firestorm.  Release the Birth Certificate to allow the focus to return to your agenda.

  1. Obama has told lies about his past in the past.
The only reason I can see that he refuses to release the actual cert is it will bring to light yet another of those many lies.

Nothing is going to satisfy the “birthers.” When you don’t produce anything, it’s a conspiracy. When you do produce anything, it’s a “forgery.”

What does it say when a recent independent poll showed that over half of Republicans say they’re not sure he’s American and most of those are Southerners?

  3. That’s just it: If he takes the focus off the “little things” then people might start paying too much attention to his agenda.

That could be fatal to his unprecedented move toward totalitarianism and tyranny.

    Comment by Angie — August 1, 2009 @ 4:55 pm - August 1, 2009

  4. Angie is right, so much easier to keep people focused on the little things. Then one can tarnish any person who opposes the president as a ‘wacky birther’.
I think he has more to lose than to gain by coming clean on this one.

    Comment by Leah — August 1, 2009 @ 5:53 pm - August 1, 2009

  5. Angie & Leah, you did just read my earlier comment that the people “focused on this little thing,” i.e. “birthers,” are 58% Republican and most of those 58% are Southerners, right? If this birther meme continues in the news, the president is somehow to blame and not the southern Republicans that continue to push the issue?

Dan says the President should “release the birth certificate.” But despite everything else that’s been released to the public what more does that do? The birthers refuse to acknowledge the veracity of what has been produced so far and it’s not even clear who people think the birth certificate should be released to, since both the governor and director of health for the state of Hawaii have publicly witnessed to the certificate. Since both pictures and photocopies of the document have been released, what’s the next step? Put it on display somewhere so people can actually view it in public? Pass it around birther meetings so each individual birther can touch it and make sure themselves?

Nothing will be enough to convince those that refuse to believe. It’s an opportunistic point to keep people focused on the “little things” but it’s because of these southern Republican birthers rather than the President’s actions. And if you agree in every aspect with the birthers, that the President should have to make the unprecedented step of somehow releasing his birth certificate to somebody “just to make the issue go away” how is it you’re not as bad as the birthers in the first place?

And how is this post in the first place helping the issue go away? Doesn’t it keep people “focused on the little things?” Aren’t your replies helping keep people “focused on the little things” by not outright acknowledging the issue is ridiculous and the birthers should be repudiated?

  6. Countervail – the released document is NOT the original certificate or a copy of it (which, if not available on paper, is on microfilm held by the state health department). There are examples of microfilmed HI birth certificates issued at the same time as Obama’s and they’re not laser-printed forms.

That being said, the birth certificate issue is moot; it’s not worth the time. It doesn’t make any difference at this point – we’re stuck with him.

But one does have to wonder why it takes more documentation for a US citizen to get a job (I-9) than it takes to be president.

  7. I disagree GayPatriotWest. The release of the Birth Certificate would not quiet this firestorm. Conspiracies are fueled by such actions not quelled.

I don’t think the “tactic has failed” at all. Firstly I doubt it’s mainly due to a push by Obama supporters. The birthers have simply gained the critical mass to be noticed outside conservatism and now it is all over the MSM. I also believe the birthers still help Obama’s flagging support.

    Comment by Argent — August 1, 2009 @ 8:06 pm - August 1, 2009

  8. There is actually two camps now in the ‘birthers’ The first one are the one’s who believe that Obama is not a citizen. the second and growing one that Obama is a citizen but there is something on the birth certificate that would be rather embarrassing to be found out. I am in the second camp but you guys are right they are trying to distract us from the main target of the obamacare and cap and tax. Though this should be a sideline issue but steady pressure be kept.

  9. Age and Citizenship requirements – US Constitution, Article II, Section 1

No person except a natural born citizen, or a citizen of the United States, at the time of the adoption of this Constitution, shall be eligible to the office of President; neither shall any person be eligible to that office who shall not have attained to the age of thirty-five years, and been fourteen years a resident within the United States.

You can demand Obama prove that he is a natural born citizen without being a “birther.” “Birther” is a derogatory term that herds all those who want to see that the Constitutional requirements are satisfied into a league with those who hold conspiracy and Manchurian Candidate theories.

Since the birth certificate (not a certificate of live birth) is the fundamental document of proof, any person taking the oath of office of President is obligated to produce clear evidence of his/her natural born citizen status.

All political tactics aside, Obama can not simply give his word as proof of citizenship.

It is telling that the Obama-nauts are so rattled by this simple to resolve request that hey have chosen to attack those asking for proof as whackos and nut cases.

Obama has proven beyond a shadow of a doubt that he can not in any way, shape or form be trusted.”

  13. Yes, the article at the link is very long, but even within the first few paragraphs, there’s proof that people who ask about Obama’s birth certificate aren’t the nutcases, here.

     In fact, just the opposite.

In view of the objective evidence, it is a very sane and rational question to ask. The article references Hawaiian laws and legal codes re birth certificates in 1961, and much, much more.  Also addresses aspects of ‘law of the blood.’ Which was a patriarchal common law in any case, not matriarchal.

  17. “birthers,” are 58% Republican and most of those 58% are Southerners, right?

    WRONG

That is the number of Republicans who supposedly doubt whether Obama was born in the US or not.

But that doesnt mean they doubt that he is not a natural born citizen.

John McCain was born in Panama. He is a natural born citizen. You can be born anywhere on Earth, including Kenya, and if one of your parents is American, you are a natural born citizen of the United States.

So apparently some Republicans think he was born in Kenya. It doesn’t follow that 58% believe he is not eligible to be president of the United States. That is an entirely different question.

My personal belief is that he is the lovechild of George Soros and Hugo Chavez, hatched in the fiery depths of hell.

  18. The thing I find the most amusing is a post I read the other day on LGF. It was bitching about the media giving so much attention to the “Nirthers” (huh?). This post, of course, was in the middle of a thread of articles on the subject. That makes sense.

This link is on a thread at another site I visit:

Is that incorrect? I haven’t had the chance to look into it yet.

My sense is that he’s lied about everything else or hid it. Why? Why didn’t the media dig into his past like they did for Palin, Joe the Plumber etc.?

Wasn’t there a Congressional panel or something which looked into whether Sen. McCain was eligible? If so, why not for Chumpy Obamalini?

How do you guys fly with all that tinfoil wrapped around your heads?

How do you function with shat for brains, JAFO?

  20. Is that incorrect? I haven’t had the chance to look into it yet.

Yes, I think it’s wrong. I’m pretty damn sure if one of your parents is a citizen, you’re a “natural born” citizen no matter where you are born. The phrase “natural born” simply means you were born a citizen instead of having immigrated. But if I’m wrong let me know.

My sense is that he’s lied about everything else or hid it.

Some columnist, I forget which one, wrote recently that “birtherism” is entirely justifiable. Given that the press has willingly covered-up everything shady about Obama’s past its perfectly natural to suspect that they are playing cover up for him on this as well. I agree.

  27. I say to all conservatives and Republicans “go for it!” Do your absolute darnedest to go about searching for all these supposed links to Obama as a Manchurian Candidate. The wilder the claim the better. There’s nothing that’s going to make Republicans and conservatives look more rascist, classist and fringe as something like this and will continue to push you out of the political middle-ground. Arguments of collusion with the MSM and well-connected Democrat money fall apart in the face of such novel ideas. The content won’t matter anymore. Democrats and liberals simply have to appear calm and rational in comparison.

I think we are at a watershed moment and I find it interesting the direction that Republicans and conservatives continue to take. Reliable ways to win public favor in an era of more freely accessible information aren’t working anymore so the fallback position is unprovable speculation and fear-mongering.

Is this what you want the future of your party and your movement to be about?

Zero claimed his administratrion was going to be the most transparent in history and he won’t even reveal his long-form birth certificate, which would confirm who his true father is.

That’s the rub! Barry has staked his whole “persona” on the “fact” his father was a Kenyan Marxist, with whom he communed in trying to move beyond race and class; while his real father is most likely Franklin Davis, known Chicago-based communist and self-admitted child molester!

Since so many voters made their assessment of BHO based upon the narrative contained in “Dreams” , if it turns out that whole story was a lie, then his entire facade crumbles into the fabrication he truly is! Open for everyone to see.

Make sure you are looking at the actual ‘original images released’. There are many people on the Internet playing games with these images. Ultimately, analysis of these documents will be performed on the actual paper originals and not photographs or scans.

Take a look at the latest Youtube video released on August 22, 2009:
