Islam is not on the side of Christ. The number one drive (subconscious or otherwise) of militant leftists is to oppose Christ. Why should militant leftist gays oppose those who are on their side with respect to the fundamental commitment of opposing Christ? The logic is coupled with the self-absorption mentioned in comment 1 above. That, and the fact that Mormons, and Christians in general, pose very little real threat, hence it is easy to oppose them and score points for "bravery".
