Can I get my Ph.D. Now?
Since the President won the Nobel Peace Prize based on his good words and anticipation of future accomplishments, can I now get my Ph.D. based on the good idea I have for my dissertation and the anticipation that I’ll write a great thesis, even if I haven’t completed it yet?

Only if your dissertation trashes America.

You know, not sure if this has been mentioned or not, but, since Obama threw the first pitch out at the All-Star game, he should win the Cy Young Award, too.

I think you should seriously consider writing a letter to that effect to your adviser or whomever. Such is the way of the world now to reward people for doing nothing.

Dan, you will earn your Ph.D and be very proud to do so.
I don’t think you want to be in the same category as our president, getting everything handed to him on a silver platter because as our VP said: he is a clean articulate black man.

The Heisman! The Heisman! Lets give it to Obama, he’s done nothing to earn it so it seems just that he should win it.

Awarded to the National Hockey Leagues best goaltender.

Just to inject a little sanity here, the Nobel Committee decides who gets the prize. They decide based on their reasons, not yours. They decide what the qualifications are, not you. Nor anyone else. In particular, they don’t give a fat flying Philadelphia fiddler’s fuck about you. Nor should they.
Gaaah. Whine whine whine that’s all you people do is whine.

PeeJ, thank you for the smile. You do take things a little too seriously, don’t you? I wrote a post with a tone of severe sarcasm included and all you could do was attack and insult and accuse me of whining.
Why do you guys always need to attack when we’re trying to have a little fun?

And apparently not even then. I’d bet the porkulus bill they wouldn’t be able to give you a straight answer as to why.
It seems, though, that they’re a helluva lot easier to buy off than the IOC.

All joking aside, Dan: *much* luck on the completion of your dissertation.
Alas, there is no ‘prize’ for a good thought/concept during one’s doctoral studies. The trick (as you know) is to keep writing — and then write some more. Eventually the defense will arrive — and then Dr. Blattt you shall be.
FYI: my husband completed his dissertation in zoology nearly six years ago (we are both now in our 30s). I was by his side the entire time — and there’s no denying how stressful and time-consuming the entire process was. BUT — it also strengthened our relationship and increased his devotion to his work.
So chin up, Blatt! Find yourself a good man who will sit by your side during the dissertation-writing process — and then marry him! It worked for hubby and me!

Thanks, JR, I think if I had a husband, I would certainly be more disciplined about my dissertation research/writing.

Dan, I got the tone of your post, but I am curious. I don’t know how much of your dissertation is completed, although I have the sense that you don’t believe it is sufficient. But what if your advisor decided that you are done? Would you say, “no thanks, I have more work to do.”? I imagine you might, but it at least it would be in the confines of a private conversation between you and your advisor. Obama didn’t have that. In any case, I do believe that Obama should decline the award.
Anyway, best wishes on the completion of your dissertation.

Not exactly, we’re also quite adept at spotting petulance when we see it…
