Oh yeah, the Hate Crimes Law. Idiotic.
Obama signed the stupid piece of legislation this week. Figured I should mention it. To underscore how inane and childish this legislation is — it is named the Matthew Shepard/James Byrd Jr. Hate Crimes Law.
Would Byrd’s name be attached if George W. Bush hadn’t been the Governor of Texas? Would this new law have punished Byrd’s murderers any more than they were? No — two were sentenced to death, the other will spend the rest of his life in jail.
Stupid, childish, petty Democrats run our nation. Meanwhile, Congressional Democrats and Obama oppose things like free-market healthcare reform, free-market social security reforms, and tax reforms that would actually do something for gay families. And the Islamist Pogrom of Gays? Democrats are silent.
Never forget that, folks. But when you murder someone this weekend, just make sure you don’t yell nasty things at them first.
*sheesh*

Now we may murder someone only for a socially acceptable reason like greed or sociopathy. Thank heavens!

more to the point, since the victims of these crimes are dead, how can anyone say for certain that there was “hate” involved?
The term “hate crime” is extremely judgmental in my opinion. Please note I am not saying that hate crimes do not happen, since the evidence of what was done by the KKK is all too obvious. What really gets me about this legislation is the fact that most members of the KKK are or were Democrats. These are the folk who used to capture blacks and then murder them. They did the same to Catholics, since these same Democrats were members of a Baptist church (not sure which one though).

There is some doubt as to whether or not Shepard was murdered for his sexual orientation. Later reporting lends some support to a robbery/high-on-meth beating. Why does it matter?
The point is that Shepard wasn’t killed in justifiable act of self-defense; he was murdered by a couple of scumbags. Given the jurisdiction, the jury was more likely than not going to sentence these cretins to death but for a deal brokered by Shepard’s parents.
The right-wingers in Wyoming don’t need a hate crime statute to send someone to the next world.
And another POV:

you’re missing the point here. this isn’t about hate crimes or social justice or democrats being touchy feely, multi-culti wussbags. rather, this is about doing an endrun around the legal principle of “double jeopardy”.
from here on out, if you’re acquitted of a crime in a state court, the feds can take a second look. maybe they need to try you again. i mean, that guy you’re accused of killing, it turns out he was jewish or eskimo or 1/4 werewolf on his mothers side.
a murder used to be a crime against an individual. with hate crimes, they’re now – also, and more importantly – crimes against the “correct” opinion. welcome to the era of Thoughtcrime.

My question is how does one get the PR that Shepherd got? A lot of gay people have been beaten and killed and you don’t hear a word about it. Do you have to be somewhat cute twink type to get the gay left’s attention or what?
Evidently being a brown-skinned Iranian schlub doesn’t warrant notice. Or maybe it was the drug abuse and HIV status of Shepherd that made it hit close to home. Maybe if Iranian gays appeared in bareback films on GayTorrents, the gay left might give a damn?

I wonder if the death penalty for gays in Uganda is a “hate crime.” I didn’t realize that Uganda was largely Mormon, since they’re the only group that hates gays.
I wonder how Obama’s African relatives feel about gays. That would make an interesting interview for some enterprising Advocate intern.

I think so, among other things.
I didn’t realize that Uganda was largely Mormon, since they’re the only group that hates gays.
I assume this was tinged with sarcasm. But I’m wondering, who ever claimed Mormons hates gays AND they are the only group that does?
I wonder how Obama’s African relatives feel about gays.
Personally, I don’t think their opinion is anymore relevant than anyone else’s opinion.

Will the Obama Justice Department now pursue the African-American pastors who are campaigning against gay marriage from their pulpits?
Cha, right.

That would have been the gay left during the Prop. 8 kerfuffle. When they weren’t mailing white powder to churches, shouting “Nigger!” in the streets etc, they were asserting that Mormons hate gays.

Exactly–since there’s no black homophobia in California, there must be no black homophobia in Uganda. Black people are cool and wise and jazzy. So, Uganda must have a huge Mormon population pushing for the gay death penalty.

I had an arguement with a flamboyant gay guy and his mother over hate crimes. They were aghast I was not in favor of the then proposed bill(this was many moons ago. . . 8 years maybe, likely just after Shepard’s murder).
Even when I pointed out that whoever killed Matt Shepard deserved to be shot/fried/gassed, whether Matt was gay or not, they claimed I just didn’t like gay people.
This law give an unequal treatment under the law.
It tells someone that the death of their son or daughter is less heinous because the scum that murdered them was just a thug, and not killing them for “hateful” reasons.
This is literally equal to having the opposite law of lesser punishment for someone killing gays for being gay. Only it is a lesser punishment for killing people for not being gay, or black, or some other disadvantaged, aggrieved peoples.

But “we all know” there would be no hate toward anybody who tried to sue on the grounds that “hate crimes law” violates the 14th.

TGC, I know there were gay persons that asserted that Mormons hate gays. But I haven’t heard any that asserted that Mormons were the only ones that hated gays. That’s why I made a point of capitalizing “AND” in my post above. During Prop 8, the Mormons were at the top of the list apparently, because of the money the spent to have it pass.
Ashpenaz, homophobia is homophobia. And I’m sure there are people who may excuse it depending on the racial group. Too many, in fact. Have the same people that asserted that Mormons hate gays in the Prop 8 battle, stated that Mormons are now the cause of what is going on in Uganda?

#14: “Ashpenaz, homophobia is homophobia.”
Yeah, Ash. And every single gay liberal that voted for Obama knows it when they see it. So, don’t try to pretend like you don’t know the difference between Mormons supporting Prop. 8 (homophobia), and Blacks, Muslims, and Democrats supporting Prop. 8 (not homophobia, duh).
