TGC, I know there were gay persons that asserted that Mormons hate gays. But I haven’t heard any that asserted that Mormons were the only ones that hated gays. That’s why I made a point of capitalizing “AND” in my post above. During Prop 8, the Mormons were at the top of the list apparently, because of the money the spent to have it pass.

Ashpenaz, homophobia is homophobia. And I’m sure there are people who may excuse it depending on the racial group. Too many, in fact. Have the same people that asserted that Mormons hate gays in the Prop 8 battle, stated that Mormons are now the cause of what is going on in Uganda?

The point is that Shepard wasn’t killed in justifiable act of self-defense; he was murdered by a couple of scumbags. Given the jurisdiction, the jury was more likely than not going to sentence these cretins to death but for a deal brokered by Shepard’s parents.

The term “hate crime” is extremely judgmental in my opinion. Please note I am not saying that hate crimes do not happen, since the evidence of what was done by the KKK is all too obvious. What really gets me about this legislation is the fact that most members of the KKK are or were Democrats. These are the folk who used to capture blacks and then murder them. They did the same to Catholics, since these same Democrats were members of a Baptist church (not sure which one though).
