Time for Buffy & Kumar to Leave White Castle, er, House

Last month, I blogged that since Deputy Director of the White House Office of Public Engagement Buffy Wicks participated on a conference call with then-National Endowment for the Arts (NEA) communications director Yosi Sergant, seeking to drum up support from artists (many receiving (or hoping to receive) grants from the NEA) for the president’s health care plan, that long-time community activist should follow Sergant’s lead and resign her government position.

Well, it looks like another White House staffer, associate director of public engagement Kalpen Modi (AKA the actor Kal Penn, who played the second title character in the 2004 flick Harold & Kumar Go to White Castle) organized and aspired to be in on that very call.

Newly disclosed emails link Kumar to the NEA politicalization scandal:

The emails reveal that Modi worked with now-former NEA national communications director Yosif Sargant in planning the August 10 conference call that was first revealed by Andrew Breitbart’s Big web site. Participants in the conference call were encouraged to use their talents to generate public support for the Obama agenda in Congress.

Via JWF via Instapundit.

Since Modi has also been involved in Administration efforts to politicize independent agencies, it’s time for this talented actor to leave Washington and return to Hollywood.  Which would be a good thing for both locales.

  1. so three emails, all on the same day, where Kal says he CAN’T be on the call somehow exposes that he ‘planned’ the call? all emails on this show the NEA guy set up the call… not Kal… i call bullshit.

  2. Could someone please point me to anyone in this administration that is honest and above board?
It is so old news that yet another operatchick is behaving like any good foot soldier in the old soviet Union.

  4. Damn!

I keep forgetting to stop by until BigHollywood provides a link. You’re linked on my blog, but I get almost no traffic, lol, so no big help there.

Good write-up. From a straight, white male: BEST WISHES AND KEEP ON TRUCKIN’.

  5. libqueen–see the uppercase portion of this email:

Email from Yosi Sergant to Kalpen Modi: “[The call is] organized by me…I’D ASK YOU TO COME ON AND GIVE THE EXACT SPIEL YOU GAVE ON SATURDAY. Walk them through the WH Arts Policy. They won’t know it. Then I will take them into United We Serve and the NEA.”

Modi pitched the idea to Sergant. Shenanigans back at you.

I see ONE e-mail where he says that he can’t move a previous appointment. So that means he had nothing to do with it?

I call liberal douchebag spinning desperately (read: bullshit).

  7. Besides, libqueen, you’re supposed to squeal like Ned Beatty “But Republicans did it too, throw out apples to oranges examples, blame Bush, collapse to the floor, roll into a fetal position and commence sucking your thumb and holding your ear.

Tano and ghillie would be ashamed of you.

  8. Naturally, libqueen (obviously, the “insufferable” is silent) misses the big picture anyway. But for the diligent reporting of a few of the remaining actual reporters in this country, we wouldn’t know a goddamn thing about this. The problem is that we actually have to resort to the analysis of the e-mails of a douchebag loser like Kal Penn to get to the bottom of the dozens of corruption and conflict of interest issues that the Obama Administration is too amateurish to understand or simply regards as business as usual. The fact that we are reading Penn’s e-mails just proves that the Obama Administration’s approach to governing is: tell agencies to do whatever they want; whenever they want; with taxpayer dollars; and if some annoying right-wing blogger calls them out; we’ll just make some personnel adjustments; question the timing of the “attack;” condemn the right-wing hate machine; refuse to answer questions or comply with basic rules of government transparency; and on Monday morning; our friends in the media will help us show that it’s not something that interests the American people.

Predictably, libqueen, being a liberal queen, thinks it’s out of line to make such snap judgments based solely upon these e-mails (AND the barrel of evidence that has already been out there detailing this scandal for WEEKS). Apparently, fairness and prudence for policing THIS White House dictate that we should wait until further e-mails and twitter postings authored by the star of “Harold & Kumar Escape from Guantanamo Bay” are unearthed, disseminated, and picked-apart, syllable by syllable before any hasty pronouncements of guilt are made. To put it diplomatically, fu*k that.

The good news is that Kal Penn will now have time to make “Harold & Kumar Escape from Guantanamo Bay 2”! Maybe in the sequel those guys can do a hilarious send up of the Pentagon’s knee-slapping decision to offer the H1N1 vaccine to the Gitmo detainees as part of the premium healthcare package they receive for being enemy combatants of the United States.

    19. Information Czar – Vivek Kundra

    Title: Federal Chief Information Officer
    Salary: unknown
Reports to: Director of the Office of Management and Budget Peter Orszag
    Appointed: March 2009
Agencies that might have handled similar issues: other federal agency CIOs

    • Basically in charge of overseeing other federal agency CIOs and for setting technology policy across the government.
    • Head of a federal technology budget that amounts to $71 billion annually
    • Operation is housed in the Office of Management and Budget (OMB) and will likely have authority to question how money in departmental technology budgets is used
    • Formerly head of the District of Columbia’s technology operations
    • Shortly after he joined the OMB, federal authorities raided his old District government office. They arrested two technology office managers and a subcontractor, charging them with a bribery scheme that allegedly defrauded the city out of at least $500,000. Kundra was not a suspect in the case, the U.S. Attorney’s office said.
    • Has a masters from Maryland in information technology.
    • Experience: Washington, D.C. Chief Technology Officer (2007 to 2009); State of Virginia’s Assistant Secretary of Commerce and Trade (2006 to 2007); CEO of computer security firm Creostar

  12. Sean: Kundra’s educational credentials are suspect from what I’ve read. And so are his ethics.

  13. #12: “Kundra’s educational credentials are suspect from what I’ve read. And so are his ethics.”

Yeah, SoCalRobert, but when the Obama Campaign found out that he accidentally paid all of his taxes, it torpedoed any hopes for a cabinet appointment. So, he had to settle for Information Czar. (So close!)

  14. From my recent letter to the NEA……

    To Whom It May Concern:
I am just an ordinary mom and citizen, living a very ordinary life, but even I see that what your organization has done to the American artist community is despicable. Your decisions to “pawn” your gifts and talents to the state will forever in the history of American art leave a stain.
With this now suspect relationship, you have forever harmed the art community by lying in bed with the government. The arts has always been about a self-expression of ideas, but now when any artist is recognized by the White House, we will not assume it was on the basis of merit or talent, but rather, for being a tool or “a good little soldier”. You may believe that you are the “American Renaissance”, but it will likely be because of your surrender of artist integrity, that we will see a true and honest renaissance of the free-thinking American artist.

  15. I had no idea this website existed and was only vaguely aware that there was some small segment of the population that included gay conservatives. I’m a straight conservative living in the Hillcrest (gay) community of San Diego and it’s as God awful liberal as one could imagine. That said, it’s nice to be reminded that people can have similar points of view despite the differences in their social makeup. Cheers to you guys for getting the conservative word out there and I’ll be sure to hit up your site again. Take care and God bless ya.

Yeah, pjean, but artists have been living off of somebody else’s dime for centuries. They’re not about to change that.

Meet us at Valley Forge where a polyglot, diverse group of Patriots saved Freedom for us. What do we pass on? You must rescue the nation from her enemies.
Then payback the surrendaCrats for vetting a foreign agent of destruction.
