Election Night 2009: OPEN THREAD

November 3, 2009 by GayPatriot

I figured we should have an open comment thread tonight.  I’ll update important races as needed.

Right now at 7:15PM, polls in Virginia have closed.  No news organizations have projected a winner….. yet.

UPDATE (from Dan):  This looks like a good sign for the GOP in VA:

Interviews with voters leaving polling stations in Virginia showed that independents — the crown jewel of elections because they often determine outcomes — broke heavily for Republican Bob McDonnell, fleeing Democrat R. Creigh Deeds.

UP-UPDATE (from Dan):  Watching the VA results on the bottom of the screen on FoxNews. All three Republicans on the statewide ticket lead by margins of about 2-1.  but, as I recall from my days in Virginia rural precincts report first, with Democratic strongholds in the north often late to tally their votes.

UPDATE (from Bruce): Does anyone think that they WOULDN’T be calling Virginia by now if Deeds were winning the real vote margin that McDonnell is at this point?  Sheesh!

7:59PM – FOX NEWS PROJECTS BOB MCDONNELL WINS VIRGINIA

8:04PM – Via Twitter:  New Jersey exit polls show Christie crushed Corzine 58-33 w/ independents. Enough to pad his lead? http://tinyurl.com/yldzqod

AND CNN continues to repeat spin of left-wing blogosphere: Divided Republicans hope for big victories in Virginia, New Jersey.

Was just scanning some articles. NJ is supposed to be neck and neck, on the exit polls so far.

(Which probably means that Corzine wins, once the NJ Democrats are done with their vote-fraud or other election-stealing tactics. But still. Neck and neck is all he can manage?)

Neck and neck makes it seem less suspicious, one might suppose. (Not that voter fraud ever seems to be satisfactorily investigated.)

That’s good Dan/Bruce about your 8:04PM post, means that the recount court battle will probably not happen..

But it’s early returns. Now 52-41 on some 400k total votes, about 30% as many as have been reported for VA. Wait for it…

I’m in Washington State. We’re waiting for results to start being posted at 8:00PM, our time.

On our ballot was Referendum 71, known by some as the “everything but marriage” decision.

It will be interesting to see how that shakes out. I’ve posted points from both sides of the issue on my blog.

    November 3, 2009 at 9:42 pm - November 3, 2009

Last number I saw from NJ with 44% counted, Christie up by 5 points, and that is not within the margin of fraud. Look for a stolen election in NJ. Waiting for the polls to close in CA-10, Harmer’s internals have him dead even with Garamendi, I still think we could see a very important upset here.

  17. John in Dublin CA says

    November 3, 2009 at 9:43 pm - November 3, 2009

Should have said, 5 points is within the margin of fraud. My bad.

  18. John in Dublin CA says

    November 3, 2009 at 9:46 pm - November 3, 2009

With 58% of the vote in, Christie is up by 6 points, 50 to 44. http://elections.nj.com/dynamic/files/elections/2009/by_state/NJ_Page_1103.html?SITE=NJNEWELN&SECTION=POLITICS

Also, according to WCBS, Chairman Obama’s appearances in NJ made no impact:

  24. Citizen Gonzo says

    November 3, 2009 at 11:22 pm - November 3, 2009

    Washington Referendum 71 update:

    8:17 pm

    44.91% to approve
    55.09% to reject

This is going to be interesting…

  25. Citizen Gonzo says

    November 3, 2009 at 11:24 pm - November 3, 2009

And, just like that, in two minutes (8:19 pm):

    52.39% to approve
    47.61% to reject

  26. ILoveCapitalism says

    November 3, 2009 at 11:25 pm - November 3, 2009

What’s the issue, again? (approve means ? reject means ?)

  27. Citizen Gonzo says

    November 3, 2009 at 11:28 pm - November 3, 2009

Approve means to keep the domestic partnership legislation passed by the state.

    Reject means to overturn it.

  28. ThatGayConservative says

    November 3, 2009 at 11:55 pm - November 3, 2009

Looks like Maine is legalizing weed so you can be high at your SSM.

  29. Citizen Gonzo says

    November 4, 2009 at 12:14 am - November 4, 2009

    LOL, ThatGayConservative!

    Update:

    9:08 PM

    51.13% to APPROVE
    48.87% to REJECT

I don’t think anyone expected it to be close… A well-known local personality was laying odds 10-1 against it not being approved.

The APPROVE movement far out-raised and out-canvassed the REJECT movement.

  30. Throbert McGee says

    November 4, 2009 at 12:31 am - November 4, 2009

    Citizen Gonzo:

Approve means to keep the domestic partnership legislation passed by the state.
    Reject means to overturn it.

More specifically, “Approve” means to keep the recent expansion to an older domestic-partnership law, while “Reject” rejects the expansion only, but doesn’t nullify earlier domestic-partnership legislation.

(Issues such as inheritance-without-a-will and medical-power-of-attorney were covered by the older DP law, and thus are not in jeopardy in the current election. The “upgraded” DP law added language relating to pensions, worker’s comp, adoption, and child custody.)

  31. Citizen Gonzo says

    November 4, 2009 at 1:03 am - November 4, 2009

@Throbert – Yep. Thanks for clarifying.

I think the adoption issue is important, having worked in family law. Co-parents need equal co-parental rights, regardless of sex or marital status. It’s what’s best for the kids.

As an adoptive mom, it’s something I feel strongly about.

In any event, it looks like it’s passing! We’re mail-in, so there will be more to count as the last-minute ballots come in, but…
