Let’s see, 69 (of 258) House Democrats “have expressed opposition to the Speaker’s health care bill.” The party’s leadership may delay the vote slated for tomorrow on the bill as they struggle to find enough votes to pass it. No wonder they’re doing what they always do when they’re in a jam: blame Republicans.
Yeah, but if Republicans are so divided, um, how come they’re unified in opposing this big-government boondoggle?
As a further sign of discontent on the right, er, left, let’s not forget that
left-wing activist group MoveOn.org began sending out emails seeking contributions to fund primary challenges against any Democratic senator who does not fully support “health care reform with a public option.” Now there’s an update: MoveOn executive director Justin Ruben says the group has raised $3,578,117 for the project and is thinking of new ways to punish errant Democratic lawmakers.
They need to find a way to get those moderates to toe the Pelosi party line. Wonder if CNN plans to run any articles on the divided Democrats. ‘Cause when it comes to partisan unrest, that’s the real story this week.
Good piece. I agree that Democrats are much more divided currently, but there is an issue you touch on here that I think deserves emphasis. Its a tiny bit tangential, but is directly relevant I think. And that is that BOTH parties are constantly having internal ideological struggles.
So many people argue that we need a mutli-party system. But the truth is that we HAVE a multi-party system now.
Within the Democrat party there are liberals, conservatives, moderates. There are Marxists, Socialists, Greens, etc… While within the Republican party there are social conservatives, social moderates and liberals, fiscal conservatives, “big government” Republicans etc…
And ALL these groups are constantly vying for control. In the GOP, for example, the big-government Frumpites have destroyed the party, but are still in positions of power which they are desperately clinging to.
The only real difference between our system and a multi-party system, is that our many parties have coalesced into permanent governing coalitions BEFORE any election takes place, while in pariliamentary systems, voters dont know what they are even getting until AFTER the results are in.
And even after our elections, those coalitions change to some degree, as they are now with health care — the radical left wing of the Democrat party against all factions of the Republican party AND “Blue Dog” democrats.
I must admit that I’m finding it quite amusing to see the Dems’ plan for victory in 2006 & 2008 come right back to bite them in the keister.
How’re them Blue Dogs now, Nance? Sure, you the cool Speaker title and office but somehow I doubt you ever thought you’d have to face this.
Methinks a fresh bowl of warm buttery popcorn is needed…
