Did AP Ever Do a Fact Check On Obama’s Books?
Yahoo! currently leads with a story supposedly fact-checking Sarah Palin’s new book, with a headline contending Palin’s book goes rogue on some facts. Because it’s the AP, I use the adverb “supposedly.” When it comes to “fact-checking” Republicans, most of their “facts” tend to be liberal talking points. And when they do use facts, they usually pull them out of context.
Anyway, this got me wondering, did the AP ever do a fact check on either of Obama’s books? And if so, did Yahoo! lead with such news?

If they fact checked Obama’s books, they’d make their first correction with the author.
Other question is if CNN fact checks Palin’s books. No one’s better at fact checking than them.

I looked at the article. Looks like more Democratic talking points than actual fact-checking.

If they should fact check the Obama books, would they start with where he was born?
Comment by heliotrope — November 13, 2009 @ 9:26 pm - November 13, 2009
The MSM has done more work on Palin’s book than they ever did on Obama’s birth certificate. Which we still haven’t seen, BTW. (Ooooh! he’s a BIRTHER! He’s stupid! He’s racist! Not like us 911 TRUTHERS!)
Comment by Ashpenaz — November 13, 2009 @ 10:13 pm - November 13, 2009
Please. If the MSM couldn’t be bothered to fact-check the floodgate of unequivocal lies pouring out of Obama’s mouth in the nationally-televised Presidential debates, they certainly couldn’t be counted on to fact-check those stupid books. However, in their defense, it’s not like you can “fact-check” a platitude, much less 650,000 of them strung together (meaning, the books AND Obama’s responses in the Presidential debates).

I’ll note that it’s been close to two years now and STILL no-one has made any attempt to interview Barack Obama’s drug dealer. He’s admitted he spent most of his time in NYC and in colege in a coked-out toked-up haze; why not talk to his bestest bestest buddy of those days, his connection?
Comment by DaveP. — November 14, 2009 @ 3:11 am - November 14, 2009
Forget the drug dealer/s for a moment—what about his educational records? What was he doing while at Columbia U.? Where are his transcripts? What about the other records that were allegedly sealed by Executive Order on January 21, 2009? It reminds me of the stories about all the impostors who pose as members of this or that profession, yet have no real credentials or proof of qualification. Bad enough when unleashed upon the general public; worse when occupying the highest office in the nation.

Obama was born in America. Why is that an issue?
Should we just keep commenting about it in comment sections so that eventually he gets impeached?
Comment by Mitchell Blatt — November 14, 2009 @ 9:53 am - November 14, 2009
Theyn why sequester his original birth certificate? No other candidate in American history has needed that kind of shielding form public scrutiny.
Comment by DaveP. — November 14, 2009 @ 3:19 pm - November 14, 2009
Correction–Obama is a US citizen (at least by fiat, if nothing else), but that does not mean he was born in America. It’s an issue because the US Constitution requires that the occupant of the highest office in the land not only be a citizen, but natural born. Maybe he was, maybe he wasn’t; but again, why the shielding from public scrutiny?
To anyone who thinks that doesn’t matter, just wait until there is a Republican who also has questionable birth status–or until an amendment is proposed that would repeal the “natural born” provision (say, for the benefit of the now-Governor of Call-ey-forn-ya). The hue and cry about “tampering with the Constitution” and “destroying tradition” will be deafening.

If more conservatives spent time talking about REAL issues instead of nonsense like Obama’s birth certificate and educational records, so many educated people like me wouldn’t have left the Republican party in disgust. Every time I want to go read something about bias in the media the comment pages are full of this crap.

The Chicago Tribune actually fact-checked at least one of Obama’s books as part of
an eight-part series. They’re in the Trib’s archives now so I haven’t
bothered to delve deeper. Maybe a conservative who cares will be willing
to actually dig them up and claim they gave him a free pass.

“Each book club will meet twice to discuss the book, a biographical
account the Tribune found through its own eight-part series to be largely
accurate but sometimes misleading in the details.”

Wow, I posted a comment complaining about the irrelevant nonsense on here (birthers, etc.) and how it demeaned the credibility of the blog and it was deleted. If you can’t take criticism and squelch opposition, don’t be a blogger. Smooth.

Sorry, now I’m confused… I keep refreshing the page and sometimes I see it and sometimes I don’t. Sorry folks; keep questioning the dems but go after them where it matters, and it’s not birth certificates. how about obama signing more drone attacks in Afghanistan/Pakistan/Iraq in his first year than Bush did in his last 3 years?

I’ve read that there’s two letters of certification the DNC filled out at the convention. One certifies that Chairman Obama and the other idiot meet the constitutional requirements. The one which was sent to the state election committees did not. Alternatively, the RNC certification letter sent to the states did contain that wording.
If so, why two different letters?

Facts, thanks for mentioned that, but the title refers to a national news service whereas the Chicago Tribune is a local paper.
So, it does seem the local news are doing the work for Democrats the national media does for Republicans. Wonder though if Yahoo! ever led with news about the Tribune’s series.
Comment by B. Daniel Blatt — November 15, 2009 @ 2:20 am - November 15, 2009
My guess is “probably not”. Aside from that, there’s a reason that conservatives in Chicagoland (including gay ones) refer to the Chicago Tribune as ‘The Libune’. If they think that El Presidente was being “largely accurate” but misleading in the facts—and they’re in the tank for him, imagine what they chose to overlook as unimportant or irrelevant.
Comment by Scott — November 15, 2009 @ 4:43 am - November 15, 2009
Reminds me of a message on a mail list I subscribe to after the death of Senator Kennedy by a gay, self-described “aging hippie” who derided the mention (by some) in the media of an incident ‘that happened forty years ago’ [ie, the death of Mary Jo Kopechne]—as if there should be a statute of limitations on the mere mention of unprosecuted negligent homicide because someone spent their life “helping the poor” (albeit with someone else’s money, natch).
If these basic things in someone’s past are irrelevant, then the logical extension is that someone who diddled little kids sometime in their past or was charged with sexual assault (but only if they’re not Republican) is perfectly eligible to become President of the US, as long as they manage to seal and conceal any evidence of same.

Sign me up as a “birther” is you wish, but allow me to define myself rather than let others do it.
There is an open, unsettled question of Obama’s birth status. If he does not have anything to hide, he need only authorize the proper documentation to be made public. Why would he skate on doing so?
When James Madison talked with his great friend and mentor George Mason about whether a Bill of Rights was necessary, Mason advised Madison to write them down because it would “cause great peace among the people.”
Obama should take Mason’s advice.
