A Preview of The Persecution of Sarah Palin

Filed under: 2008 Presidential Politics,Sarah Palin

It’s not always a good idea to recommend a book of which you’ve read only the first 18 pages.  But, if the remaining 208 pages of Matthew Continetti’s The Persecution of Sarah Palin: How the Elite Media Tried to Bring Down a Rising Star are as good as its Prologue, this could prove to be one of the best books on the 2008 presidential campaign.

On pages 13-15, in a section entitled “The Second Front” wherein he provides the background on John McCain’s selection of the then-Alaska Governor, Continetti offers perhaps the best short summary of the dynamics of last year’s election at the time when the then-presumptive Republican presidential nominee considered choosing a running mate.

A few pages earlier, he had given a brief background of Mrs. Palin, showing her to be the kind of politician who has long existed in the feminist imagination:  an independent woman who challenges a corrupt male establishment:

Throughout her professional life, Sarah Palin has challenged the dominant power structure and overturned the accepted, elite narrative of the ways things ought to be. . . . Her state establishment declared that Juneau ought to be run by a cozy network of Republican lawmakers and energy interests.  Palin didn’t think so.

If people studied the record of this accomplished woman before rushing to demonize her.  But, then again, if they hadn’t Continetti wouldn’t have been able to write this book.

He clearly knows his stuff, so I give the book a preliminary thumbs up.

FROM THE COMMENTS:   I wonder if many of our liberal readers will second DaveP’s motion “that we hold Barack Obama and his family to the Sarah Palin standard.”

  1. Why do you always play the victim card?

She started her national career promising, read a great speech, and people discussed her reformist cred and the pick seemed pretty good. Her record was fine and defendable.

Unfortunately she opened her mouth and came off as liar and simpleton (Putin rearing his head)
Then her first speech she started with a lie – bridge to nowhere.

Then we find out she lied about the speech:
    http://blogs.abcnews.com/politicalpunch/2008/09/palin-and-the-t.html

    Lied about her clothes:
    http://www.theinsider.com/news/1329108_Sarah_Palin_Candid_on_Fashiongate

Tried to lie to her whole campaign staff about her family’s secessionist past:
    http://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2009/07/01/politics/main5128672.shtml

    Lied to Peres:

And on and on and on. No wonder she was ridiculed. Its not the media’s fault but her own actions.

  2. Ah yes, the same media and syncophant puppets like gillie that claimed, at Barack Obama’s command, that she faked her pregnancy and who claimed that she said she could see Russia from her house are now trying to attack her as a liar — especially after they posted faked pictures of her today as truth.

You and your fellow liberals, including the media, told those lies about Palin, gillie. Own up to them first before you start accusing her. But that would require you to apply the same standards to your Barack Obama, who pushes all of these lies about Palin, and you can’t do that.

    Okay by you, Gillie?

  4. Is it me, or has anyone else noticed that the more terrified a rat liberal gets, the more links they throw into their comments?

As if citing more widely-read bullshit somehow validates their own sophomoric worldview…

  5. So, ghillie, we’re supposed to swallow whole that the media that reported the most disgusting, most reprehensible, most damnable lies about her and her family are suddenly telling the truth here???

Why do you always play the victim card?

Why are liberals so insecure that they always have to play the race card?

  6. gillie, I love you man. You are a poster boy Democrat. Clinton has sex play with an intern in the Oval office and you go into orbit over a possibly gay Republican Senator playing footsie in a bathroom stall.

George Bush goes into Commander-in-Chief mode and you put John F’n Kerry forth as the greatest war hero since Rambo.

You make BushHitler the preferred title for the President and you are stunned and outraged when a tea party poster appears of Obama with a small brush mustache.

Now we have a President who lies like coast to coast carpeting and you fix on citizen Sarah Palin as the agent of the devil.

Not only that, but the level and quality of the lies you with which you try to paint Palin are purely laughable. She once spilled orange soda on her new tennis shoe, what incompetence!

I look at the Democrats and I find a room populated with Obama, Pelosi, Reid, Schumer, Specter, Leahy, Durbin, Boxer, Sheila Jackson Lee, Granholm, Murtha, Levin, Paterson, Franken, Holdren, ACORN, the Czars, Lautenberg, Dodd, Frank, Sharpton/Rangel, Juicy Jackson, Nagin, the Clintons, Podesta, Soros, Frank Rich, ABC/NBC/CBS, NOW, AARP, NYT, WaPo, Burriss, Carville, et. al.

I look to see who among the Republicans there is to balance out that zoo and I find gillie promoting Sarah Palin, Glenn Beck, Rush Limbaugh, Sean Hannity and Christians as the root of all evil.

gillie, why don’t you guys ever have anything of moment and substance with which to smear your foes? Do you have an inborn aversion to being serious?

Get back to me on that when Malia has an illegimate daughter and her boyfriend starts posing nude.

(Which is not to say that that is a political issue, but you mentioned Obama’s family in there, so I assume that’s what you’re referring to, and Obama’s family doesn’t have such a trashy daughter, so there’s no comparison)

  8. Funny.

In my comment, I point out her lies.
Instead of dealing with the fact that she is liar and a wingnut you attack Clinton, Malia and make up all kinds of zaniess.

She is a Liar and very dumb. Her interviews and speeches prove this.

Yet instead of dealing with the facts, you circle the wagons and jerk inward.

  12. Mr. Blatt,
Thanks for advocating the Andrew Sullivan double standard- that the children of any Democrat are off-limits because we’re all class acts here; but the children of any Republican are always ‘fair game’ with no bottom limit to the sleaze… and that’s okay!

Or are you just afraid that Obama can’t live up to the same standard you apply to Sarah?

  15. gillie, your attempts at thinking are so strained.

OK, let’s examine your case in post #1 link by link:

    1. Did she “lie” when she said she lost her connection with the teleprompter? Sorry, gillie, but your link does not contradict her. But more important, if this were hyperbole, how does it reach the level of a hanging offense? If you set the bar at over reaching in political discourse, Obama should be circumcised down to the tip of his little toe.

    2. If there is something to see in link #2 about “Fashiongate,” you will have to print it out for me in large letters, because I cannot find it.

    3. The “he said, she said” insider stuff between Palin and Steve Schmidt is old news and, as I understand it, addressed in her soon to be released book. But your statement that she has a “secessionist past” puts the burden on YOU. Prove it, gillie. Your lame link goes nowhere.

    4. What the heck is this? An unnamed aide says she said………….. I guess you are saying dumb Palin claims not to have the US or Alaska state flag in her office, only the flag of Israel …….. Prove that she said it ………. Or is this bit from the gossip column of a newspaper all the proof you need?

Bless you, gillie, if you held Obama to 1/1000th of the standard by which you choose to rail at Palin, poor old Obama would have been hog-tied and spit roasted long ago. We can’t even say for certain that he is a US citizen. But you are all broken out in a rash over whether Palin “lied” about losing her place on a teleprompter.

gillie, you are the most useful idiot of manipulating demagogues I have ever encountered. And in saying so, I am paying you a high compliment. Others might place you at the lower edge of formal measurement for the class designated as moron.

  18. gillie, are you aware of Sarah Palin’s accomplishments in Alaska? Please show a familiarity with her achievements before accusing her of stupidity.

    Thanks.

  19. “Sarah Palin, Glenn Beck, Rush Limbaugh, Sean Hannity and Christians as the root of all evil.”

No, just instruments of the root of all evil :) BTW, I’ve never read anyone on here condemning all Christians so your statement is typical bullshit. SOME conservative Christians are dangerous fanatics and you ignore them at your peril. I guess one of the problems is that most of you are unable to comprehend anything that isn’t black and white. All liberals, Democrats, Muslims etc. are evil in your eyes. Flush, that’s where that attitude belongs.

    Re: Palin, yawn.

  20. BTW, I’ve never read anyone on here condemning all Christians so your statement is typical bullshit.

Sorry, but because you say you never read it does not verify as fact that it has not occurred. I suppose you have never seen a narwhale in the wild, so they too are BS.

This site is well visited by people of no religious faith and a blatant dislike of religious faith who focus their scorn on “Christianists” and make no bones about it. If you are speaking for gillie and you have evidence that gillie seeks to follow the Christian way, I suggest that you don’t know gillie from Shinola.
