dan, there’s nothing about this post that can’t be said about elements of the conservative party. sarah palin referred to the democrats’ health plan as evil. yesterday, laura ingraham adapted the poem “first they came” to smear health care reform proposals as nazi-esque. i don’t see what you gain by pointing out the bias of liberal pundits when the same thing can be said about (some) conservatives.

I don't know why some can't agree to disagree, even when they agree on so much else. WINGNUTS THREATENING PULLOUT OF CPAC IF GAY GROUP STAYS It's almost like they are demonizing people:

It boils down to this: there is nothing “conservative” about — as Barber inimitably puts it — “one man violently cramming his penis into another man’s lower intestine and calling it ‘love.’” Or two women awkwardly mimicking natural procreative relations or raising a child together in an intentionally fatherless home. This does not mean that people practicing those and other immoral (and changeable) behaviors cannot think and act conservatively on other issues like lowering taxes, cutting government spending, ending abortion, etc. But let’s be honest: the “proud” in GOProud is not about pride in opposing the death tax, or defending the right to bear arms; it’s about proudly embracing sinful homosexual behavior – and that is hardly a conservative value.

Why must the ~~left~~ right define their ideological adversaries (and even their occasional allies) as evil and dumb?

Buddy, you are a riot. That first part of your post – “dissent from the right”, is probably the calmest, most ratonal sentence you have ever written on this site. Man, it must have been a huge effort for you to do that.

Weren’t you just itchin’ to write “MaobamaStalinHitler, the Kenyanmooooslim commiefascist has liedliedlied to us about his totalitarian healthcare plan that will enslave America, murder our grandparents and our parents and our kids, and must be defeated as the existential threat to all of western civilization that it is – time to water the tree of liberty, blah blahblah”

Dissent from the right looks like this: Obama’s health care plan will raise costs and lower the quality of care, and should therefore be opposed.

Dissent from the left looks like this: Bushitler lied us into war so he could make his buddies at Halliburton rich and steal oil from brown people.

All dissent is not created equal.

This is a good example of the ugly partisanship that has helped alienate me from BOTH parties. You give an example from the Left, of which there are oh so many more, yet there are numerous from the Right as well. From what I can tell about Palin, I like her. She has a compelling backstory, seems to have done pretty good as governor and comes across as a likeable person. Does this mean I believe she is presidential material? Nope. Yet this plus my disagreements with her on some issues aren’t enough for me to demonize a woman who seems to be a decent enough person.

Because if one is pushing the politics of salvation (of whatever type) then someone who disagrees is an "enemy of salvation". It is a form of cognitive blockage, which I discuss in a recent post.
