In the wake of the devastating earthquake which struck Haiti, the poorest nation in our hemisphere, I encourage you to support efforts which provide relief to the victims of this disaster.
Michelle links a variety of ways to help:
State Department resources and charities.
Relief efforts list via The Anchoress.
Fund-raising efforts via Chuck Simmins.
In past crises, I’ve supported Jewish World Service, so will make my contribution via their Haiti Earthquake Relief Fund. I encourage y’all to support at least one relief organization. Any contribution, no matter how small, helps at a time like this.
Just because some charity claims it’s to “help Haiti”, be cautious whom you give your money to. Too many “charities” have huge overheads that cut into their charitable efficiencies. Unless they pass-through 85-90% of their donations, find someone else. And try not to give to organizations that will just pass-along their money to corrupt local Haitian authorities and organizations. Haiti is one of the poorest and most-corrupt places in the Western Hemisphere short of Washington DC and Turtle Bay.
Something I’ve been curious about, regarding this devastation:
Haiti isn’t the only country on the island of Hispaniola. What damage did the Dominican Republic sustain? And why aren’t we hearing about it?
Or (suggested blog posting) does this say anything at all about non-corrupt government, wealth as a causation for security, and free-enterprise as a generator of said wealth?
I was looking for some coverage on Haiti on Glenn Beck last night. I found 37 seconds of coverage. O’Reilly and Hannity donated 3 minutes each.
Tom, what do those fellows have to do with anything. I don’t mention them in my post, yet you feel compelled to bring them up.
What explains your need to attack conservatives and (in the case of Beck and O’Reilly) those perceived as conservatives?
please contribute to the relief effort in Haiti
