It’s not so much that he has an inside source, but that he’s simply aware of the combination of history and lore surrounding the much-debated ritual at Bois Caiman. The story goes that Boukman and his followers bled out a pig, drank the blood, invoked some dark god, and went on a killing spree. Such was the beginning of the revolution in Haiti. This isn’t some secret or some kind of racist joke… it’s really in the history books. Go searching for “Bois Caiman”. Robertson is being a lot more objective than most people are aware… “this” time.

Pat Robertson is to Christianity what Adam Lambert is to being gay. It is sad that these kind of people stand out in a community where there are thoughtful and compassionate people. I bet Katherine Jefferts-Schori has a different opinion–why doesn’t anyone ask her?

The truly sad thing about Robertson? I first heard of the slavery and clensing in the Sudan in the 90′s, or the suffering of the Serbs from our bombing campaign in Kosovo, or about the assault on the Temple Mount by muslims, all from CBN. I just always hit mute when he’d try to tell us what the news meant though.

Coversation between me and a 700 club solicitor:

Not all of the modern Christian/Catholic community has buried the promise to renounce the devil and all of his works. Some churches examine the devil and the fires of Hell with more concern than others. The Old Testament gives them a lot to think about on the Hell side of things.

Pat Robertson has God’s Blackberry number and apparently they text back and forth regularly. Unfortunately for Robertson, when he reveals what is on God’s mind, a lot of people question his sanity. That only riles him up.

I have an acquaintance who had some census from somewhere of how many Regents University (The school Robertson founded) lawyers were in the Bush Department of Justice. Apparently, if you have ever had contact with Robertson or a Robertson enterprise, you are toxic for life. Sort of like consorting with, well, the devil.

Robertson is best ignored as he is really quite harmless. Consider him one of those robed characters carrying an End of Times sign. If he is right, what’s the difference? If he is wrong, what’s the difference?

Accept, for the sake of argument, that Haiti is grounded in sin. The sinners still need our help, love and compassion. That is the lesson of the life of Christ.

No one has really brought up the racist origin of the “pact with a devil” story.

It is propaganda that was used by slave owners to keep their slaves from revolting like the Haitians.

They told their slaves that whites were given their privilege to rule by God and that the only way the slaves of Haiti could have won their feeedom was by selling their souls to Satan.

The myth of the pact with the devil stems from the story of Dutty Boukman, a vodoun priest who was executed for knowing how to read (his name literally meant “book man”) and leading his people in their struggle for freedom.

So, Pat Robertson is perpetuating racist late 18th century propaganda.

The Poisoners in Haiti threw off the yolk of slavery with poison and witchcraft – but probably it had more to do with the poison. Then they set up a tyrannical ruler even worse than what had come before–but they were free!
