It was heartbreaking to watch the Georgian athletes walk into the Olympic Stadium. Every other nation was cheering, jumping up and down and soaking in the excitement. But the Georgians were in mourning for the loss of their comrade-in-sports, Nodar Kumaritashvili, who died yesterday morning in a training run on the luge course.
I just wanted to take a moment to express my sorrow to all those who knew Nodar and his family. And condolences to all those Olympians who were struck by the tragedy yesterday.
It is sad that the World had to come together last night under a cloud of darkness, but I was cheered by how brave the Georgian delegation was as they strode into the stadium with 60,000 people encouraging them to continue on with their dreams.

What’s infuriating is the number of crashes that had already occurred on that track, and how many experienced athletes had complained that the track was unsafe. Despite all this, the IOC is claiming the track had nothing to do with the crash. They’re raising the wall he crashed on, but not doing anything more.
This makes me fear for all the athletes. How many other unsafe things are they covering up?
My condolences to Nodar Kumaritashvili, his family, friends, and fellow Olympians.
Luge is a dangerous sport, and perhaps it’s time to design the luge tracks to be safer, and with padding, etc., should anyone lose control.
Nice post. Such a horrific tragedy. My heart goes out to his family and loved ones.
My condolences as well…. as the people of this United States remember George Washington….A wig he was….
This athlete will be remembered in his country and ours as a true patriot….It’s the wide world of sports and the agony of defeat..

I suppose that a wake is not the place bring this up, but ……. tell me again how “luge” is a sport. Can you buy a luge at Costco? Where are the great luge assembly points around the world and where do you go to join the international federation of luge enthusiasts? If I go to JFK, will I see people checking their luge as baggage? Somehow, this event reminds me of javelin catching or head butting.
