The HomoCon Tipping Point: CPAC 2010

February 23, 2010 by B. Daniel Blatt

I am thrilled to announce that as of today, I’m a new contributor at Andrew Breitbart’s Big Journalism site.  My first post summarizes the “homocon tipping point” that occurred this past weekend at the CPAC conference.

Here’s a taste:

The reaction from the mainstream media and Gay Left blog community was swift and predictable:   CPAC boos the gays. Most delivered their verdicts without being at the conference itself, talking to anyone there or even watching the earlier video where Alexander McCobin was applauded.  The idea that the conservative movement would actually rally behind GOProud at the CPAC conference was completely unimaginable to those on the Left as news of the event spread.

But there’s a LOT more.  I encourage you to read the whole thing.

And, while I’m at it, let me suck up a bit to my new partner — the conservative media bulldog Andrew Breitbart.

Andrew Breitbart of Breitbart.com, BigGovernment.com, BigJournalism.com, BigHollywood.com is big.   He is bigger than all his entities combined, he is big energy, big bravery, big wallet, and big-hearted to take on seemingly endless government corruption in the Obama administration.  He fills any room with his aura and his voice.  Everyone knows when Breitbart is in the house.

I read this on Big Journalism this morning, but did not take notice of the author. An excellent report and well worth the read. Kudos.

Very good post, Bruce. I always love to see the CPAC speeches. Also very affirming to see those crowd responses. 🙂

Congrats on the Big Journalism gig! Very cool. Good first post…some frightening comments. In fact I’m inclined to believe some of them are frauds posted by lefties they’re so over the top.

Congrats, Bruce! I am sharing with my nearly 700 conservative friends on FB. (First time I posted on the miniwar at CPAC on this, a minor flamewar ensued and I lost 2 friends. Ha, no loss! 🙂 ) I think this year is a watershed for conservatives for many reasons, this one one of the biggest.

Good article, Bruce. Many of the comments there leave a lot to be desired though…

Excellent piece, Bruce, and I’m glad to see the reaction and welcome you received.

Not to defend Sullivan (who I find tiresome usually), but I think you’re wrong when you state this:

Nevertheless, Sullivan labeled Sorba “a glimpse into the future of Republicanism.” While Keith Olbermann is defending conservatives, Andrew Sullivan is tearing them down.

I think Sullivan is right. Sorba is a glimpse into the future of Republicanism, not conservatism. I only offer that as my opinion, because there is a large contingent of Republicans who agree with Sorba – and they’re not necessarily conservative, but they do support the Sorba brand of Republicanism. To put it another way, I think Sullivan is not equating Republicans and Conservatives, because the two can be and sometimes are mutually exclusive.

Just offering a different read on it.

Hey folks — a note on the comments. The editors and I were immediately aware of some of the more inflammatory ones (we know which one I’m talking about, I’m sure). In any case, only a couple were flagged and deleted (at my insistence).

I understand from the editors at BigJournalism that AE is correct. Many of the commenters at BJ on previous posts are in fact trolls and not reflective of the BJ readership.

Kind of like Kevin Sorba at CPAC. 🙂

This might be a little long and rambling-ie.

I have been waiting for this tipping point for a long time. I am a very straight married man but my biggest (only) beef with conservatism has been the “equality for everyone unless they are gay.”

I have always believed that fiscal conservatism was the American way, the way that it was supposed to be. I was 10 when Regan was elected to his first term and I remember the talk of voodoo econ, but even to my own young mind I thought “why is it fair that the government gets to steal big chunks of your hard earned money” but I never got the whole “moral majority” thing.

I believed that my military service was to protect the rights and equality of ALL Americans (as an aside my direct superior from 89 to 92 was gay in the military before DADT and EVERYONE in my command knew he was gay but didn’t care because he was good at his job).

This great contradiction in the ones who espoused to love individual freedom was impossible for me to reconcile and thus I cast many votes for dems that I didn’t like simple because I HATED the social conservatism.

If this new detente in that area is real a long lasting I will bust my ass to get conservatives in office.
