Wonder how those libertarians who voted for Obama feel about their 2008 vote about now?

Every day, it seems, we discover some new piece of data showing just how much the federal leviathan has grown these past 14 months, with government salaries outpacing those in the private sector, with Washington D.C. booming while the heartland suffers, with the size of the public sector increasing while the private sector decreases.

And all that got me wondering, how do all those libertarians who voted for Obama feel right now?

  1. Aren’t libertarians who vote for Democrats more correctly known as ‘idiots’? If your goal in life is to reduce the size of government, rule #1 is to not vote for people who you know will increase the size of government.

Seriously, that’s not even politics, it’s just basic logic.

  2. I suspect that “libertarian” is about as easy to pin down as “gay community.”

  3. My brother flirts with voting libertarian. It’s his way of showing disgust for both parties. But he knows now, Obama has really made the differences between the parties on spending, very stark. We’ll see when the Republicans regain the House if they learned any lessons the past 6 years.

  4. I’m libertarian. I’m also gay. But I certainly did not vote for Obama. I don’t know of any libertarians who did. The only reason they might have was because they thought he’d end the wars, but he’s as much as warmonger as most mainstream politicians.

More and more I see this country rejecting mainstream, status-quo politicians. You better get on the bandwagon before it passes you by.

  5. I know of a couple of Ron Paul supporters who, because the “Only True Constitutionalist”(which is BS in it’s own right) didn’t get the Republican nomination, they voted for 0bama.
‘Idiots’ is too mild a term.

  6. JP, this Ron Paul supporter wasted his vote on John McCain.

    Tomato – ToMAHto – Tano ;-)

More seriously on the SoCon vs SoLib issue, John why wouldn’t you meet the SoCons halfway? I mean a correction of Roe v. Wade would result in it being a state issue. It wouldn’t make abortion disappear.

More importantly, would you agree that the government has no place funding art? So would you stand with SoCons on defunding the NEA? If the SoCons look at the repeal of DADT as worthwhile would you stand with them?

I don’t expect you or Senna-anna to agree on everything. Heck I know you and I don’t agree on everything, but I think AE has it right. A political party has to unify on where they show common ground, and worry about the rest later.

  9. It’s impossible to be a libertarian and still support Obama after his first year. Unless you’re Bill Maher.

  10. No one who voted for Obama knows what the term “libertarian” means.
