The Democratic Health Care Obsession

March 15, 2010 by B. Daniel Blatt

Sometimes I think President Obama, Nancy Pelosi and her Democrats are so hell-bent on passing health care is that they just want to prevent the GOP and Republicans from being able to gloat.

They’re so focused on being able to pass this “historic” bill.  But, just because the left has wanted a major health care overhaul for sixty some odd years doesn’t mean the American people want it.  And it’s too bad the Democrats confuse their own wishes–and their party’s long dreams with popular will.

I know there’s more to it than this, but when you look at how they’ve gamed the numbers, how they’ve bought off wavering Senators, how they’re using procedural gimmicks to pass this, it just seems that the goal of passing this has superseded all else.

Like the junkie selling all his possessions for a fix.

It’s not to gloat, it’s for power.

Just like the ‘great Society’ built a permanent underclass that pulls the lever ‘D’, they hope that by putting the people under their thumb from cradle to grave, they’ll make a permanent power bloc.

Besides, they know the R’s are never going to have the testicular fortitude to repeal this beast.

Your comment about junkies needing a fix is close to the point. There comes a time when there is no shame in backing down. In this case it would be a sign of strength and confidence, and of actually listening to the will of the people. Even the people who ultimately support their agenda are telling the Democrats to back down. But they won’t, and they put themselves in ever more ridiculous positions rather than start over. It’s an addiction.

Half a league, half a league,
    Half a league onward,
All in the valley of Death
    Rode the six hundred.
    ‘Forward, the Light Brigade!
Charge for the guns’ he said:
    Into the valley of Death
    Rode the six hundred.

    ‘Forward, the Light Brigade!’
    Was there a man dismay’d?
    Not tho’ the soldiers knew
    Some one had blunder’d:
    Theirs not to make reply,
    Theirs not to reason why,
Theirs but to do and die:
    Into the valley of Death
    Rode the six hundred

On the other side at Balaclava, the Russians watched the hopeless cavalry charge in dismay and in court French, labelled it “madness.”

It is amazing to think of democrats going down fighting, but this is their charge of their light brigade and they are determined to “do and die.” Meanwhile, like all rear echelon generals, The Won will survive 2010 to plot and scheme and blame the “six hundred.”

If Obama were a republican, you would be calling what he is doing as leadership..

    Nope, we wouldn’t.

    See bailouts, Bush, George W.

    Nice try though gillie.

Oh and heliotrope, I have more faith in the light brigade. At least there was a young leftennant who led his unit through the valley, meleed the gunners at the far end, and made it back out.

#4: But Obama is not a Republican, gillie. So, what do you call this? Leadership? This is no longer about saying “screw the polls.” Now the Democrats have apparently decided on a course of action that says “screw the Constitution.” Is this what you call leadership? The Democrats had a year to do whatever they wanted legislatively and this thing still managed to go completely sideways on them to the point where they can’t even count on a simple majority in the House to pass a bill (so they’re just dispensing with the whole process altogether). This is all acceptable to you and you’re still confident that you’re one of the “good guys”? This is the “leadership” that you plan on sending back to Congress this fall and the White House in 2012? If so, why don’t you at least admit that you don’t believe the rules apply to the Left because in the end, you’re right and everybody else is wrong? Just be honest–“shredding the Constitution” has never been the problem for you, just who is doing the shredding, right?

They would have been far wiser politically to push for a smaller bill that had mainly the popular items such as concerning pre-existing conditions instead of this monstrosity. Apparently they learned nothing since 1993, except how to be more arrogant and make a huge power-grab.

He is saying “screw the polls, the people, the representative democracy, open and transparent government, fiscal responsibility, protecting the best health care in the world, I am going to do what I deem best for to the country.”

If Obama were a republican, you would be calling what he is doing as leadership.. reaching across the aisle for help in shooting a hole in the bottom of the ship of state while desperately searching for a reef to smash into.

As is the case with both parties, this is nothing new. Obama, form you POV, is doing the right thing, at great political cost. Five years ago, Bush, with his futile attempt to pass meager social security reform, was in the same boat.

All I know is that I’m sick to death hearing about this stupid bill. I agree something needs to be done, but this thing stinks on ice, and isn’t the “something” that should be done. It’s a mess. It doesn’t do the one thing that it must do to be a success – control health care cost. You can spin the details this way and that, put all the lipstick on it that you like, but it all comes out the same. Hell, at this point, I would support a true state run medical system over this useless piece of junk.

I didn’t think it could be repealed 6 months ago, either. Now I’m not so sure.

The ads write themselves: A video of an 18th century patriot throwing tea into the harbor while the announcer explains that you the voter are being subjected to 21st century style taxation without representation by pointing out not a single person in the House voted on the Senate bill, creating an “illegitimate law” that raises your taxes by $500 billion, cuts your Medicare by $500 billion, and uses budget gimmicks to present a false sense of fiscal austerity that it will reduce the budget deficit even though 30 million more people are covered.

I think Axelrod is smoking crack if he rreally believes voters won’t care about the Democrats highjacking the legislative process with the “Slaughter Solution”. Run an ad showing the astounding arrogance of power and blatant disregard for the Constitution to pass an “illegitimate”, unpopular law on a party line vote and I think the DEMs will get slaughtered this fall. I think the GOP will take back the House, and make up alot of ground in the Senate. Obama’s presidency will be weakened and the GOP could pick up the remaining senate seats in 2012 to get a majority. If they can also re-take the presidency, that would do it.

    This is not about healthcare.

To paraphrase Mark Steyn on the radio today… this is about crossing the bridge to a social-welfare state and then burning the bridge. As demonstrated in Europe, a population of free-born citizens can be turned into clients of the welfare state with remarkable speed.

This has to be the biggest threat to the nation since the Civil War.

This country has been through a lot (the World Wars, the depression, recessions, the Watergate political mess) but I can’t think of anything from the New Deal or Great Society that is a basic game-changer like this.

Add this to the use government indoctrination in the schools and the use of immigration to replace the shrinking but still recalcitrant number of citizens who believe in liberty and the US won’t be recognizable within a generation.

Jax, I agree. And even if he would have had the same advantage that Obama does, I doubt he would have got this far over the edge of sanity to get it passed. But he did try to get people on board long after it was obvious that this ship wasn’t even going to sail.

And, given the current state of the market, if he would have gotten it through, those stuck on short term outlook syndrome would be crucifying him and the republicans for it.

Like TL said, it’s not to gloat, it’s to expand government and grab (more) power over the citizenry. That is the leading Democrats’ goal. They are not moral, kind or benevolent. They should not be credited with good motives.

They have also convinced themselves that once the Sheeple taste medical fascism, they will like it. Some of them will; others will revolt (and already are).
