Americans View GOP more favorably than Democrats*

April 9, 2010 by B. Daniel Blatt

Seems passage of Obamacare has worked wonders for the Democrats’ public image.  According to Gallup

Americans’ favorable rating of the Democratic Party dropped to 41% in a late MarchUSA Today/Gallup poll, the lowest point in the 18-year history of this measure. Favorable impressions of the Republican Party are now at 42%, thus closing the gap between the two parties’ images that has prevailed for the past four years.

Nice, but November is still a long ways away. At this point in the last election Iraq was still the big issue. Then look what happened. It’s health care today, but what is it going to be in July? I’ll feel better on November 3rd after the ballots are counted and the Congress is in GOP control.

Michael Steele has nothing to do with the GOP’s image problem. Republicans were wiped off the map in the last two elections, and that was before Michael Steele was the boss. They had an image problem before and they have one now, for mostly the same reasons.

You can believe that Republicans are more popular than Democrats if you want to, but the important question is why are things trending the way they are? According to a Republican, it is because Obama is a radical forcing a radical agenda on a confused and and angry public. For someone like myself, and I fully agree that Republicans are growing in popularity compared to the Democrats, the trend is due to Obama’s self-inflicted ineffectiveness and an unchallenged conservative media apparatus spreading misinformation.

I’ve been expecting this for a long time. Time heals all wounds, and the further away we get from the terrible days of the Bush administration, the less people remember about why they did not like having the Republicans in charge. This is especially true since Obama has taken office and for the most part has ignored or embraced all of the things that got people so mad about Bush. The ability of the Republican brand to rebound after those disastrous years has been entirely in the hands of one man, President Obama, and he’s been doing nothing but making sure you guys have every opportunity to get back into power sooner rather than later.

Here are some other polls from yesterday that you will surely do your best to ignore:

    1) Looks like, in this one, Americans have a much MORE favorable view of Democrats than they do Republicans. Oh, also: Americans have a more favorable opinion of the IRS than they do of the Tea Party. And looks who’s at the top and the bottom of the list, too. This is a FOX News Poll, so good luck spinning it away.

“10. – 16. I’m going to read you the names of several individuals. Please tell
me whether you have a generally favorable or unfavorable opinion of each one.
If you’ve never heard of someone, please just say so. (RANDOMIZE)
    SCALE: 1. Favorable 2. Unfavorable 3. (Can’t say) 4. Never heard of
    *** SUMMARY CHART ***

    Barack Obama

    The Internal Revenue Service
    49%
    The Democratic Party
    42%
    The Republican Party
    40%
    The Tea Party Movement
    36%
    Nancy Pelosi
    29%

    2) Very Low Favorability Ratings for Former Half-Term Governor Palin:

    http://www.cbsnews.com/8301-503544_162-20001980-503544.html

    3) And guess what? What most thinking people knew already: the Tea Party has a lot to do with racism! Ugly, but true:

“The Tea Party, the incipient movement that claims to be committed to reigning in what they perceive as big government, appears to be motivated by more than partisanship and ideology. Approximately 45 % whites either strongly or somewhat approve of the movement. Of those, only 35% believe blacks to be hardworking, only 45 % believe blacks are intelligent, and only 41% think that blacks are trustworthy. Perceptions of Latinos aren’t much different. While 50% of white tea party supporters believe Latinos to be hardworking, only 39% think them intelligent, and at 37%, fewer tea party supporters believe Latinos to be trustworthy.”

Folks, if you care to know, the poll littleletterperson william unleashes in point number three of his comments is cresting a wave of meaningless drivel.

The Wiser unit at the University of Washington which conducted the poll is a below average unit at an average institution which is trying to make a name for itself. News organizations have taken to polling in order to create the news they wish to report. So also, do fledgling, mediocre university departments conduct polls and sponsor study weeks as a way to gain notoriety.

Study the Wiser poll and you will quickly discover that there is no “procedure disclosure.” We do not know how or why they choose their sample, how they weighted their sample or what method they used to establish their statistical deviation per cent or even if they calculated one.

Figures don’t lie, but liars can figure. I can create a poll that elevates littleletterperson william to probable or sainthood in the same way I can find a way to hook him to the GW Bush family tree.

When it comes to nearly any university generated poll, the standard rule is “buyer beware!” This Wiser poll is a weak effort at a scatter shot thesis target at best. If the minor monograph it produces garners any attention, I will be surprised.

william obviously loves the results of this abomination. That says more about william than the poll.

Thanks for the barrage of generic jargon, littleletterperson heliotroperash, but um… it sounds like just that: a barrage of generic jargon. Specifically, where are citations for anything you say about the study or the institution, or we just take your “expert” word at it? I’d also be interested in specifically how this survey’s methodology and procedure disclosure differs from, say, Gallup. I’m also wondering if you’ve contacted these folks to find out more about their procedure, other than what’s been released in the press release and results .pdf? Or are you just guessing? Finally, a comparison between this survey’s level of published detail (in terms of methodology, etc) and other major polling groups, etc. would be helpful; from what I read, it looks like their summary was about on par with the level of detail you can get from Gallup, etc. Until you can provide those things, I’ll just assume you’re making a lot of noise about nothing. Again, really, are the results of this survey really that much of a surprise?

Here some more uncomfortable but obvious news for teabaggers to chew on: “Anger over Health Care Reform Spurs Rise in Threats Against Congress Members”

    http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2010/04/08/AR2010040805476_pf.html

Specifically, where are citations for anything you say about the study or the institution, or we just take your “expert” word at it?

    The irony there is palpable.

William is demanding citations to prove what heliotrope pointed out — that there is an utter lack of citations on said poll, references to the questions that were actually asked, a description of the sample size or the characteristics of the sampled population, and so forth.

In short, william is criticizing heliotrope for heliotrope’s lack of citations while supporting and endorsing a poll on which even william admits william does not know the sample size, methodology, or procedure, but is citing the results as absolutely true and valid.

And the University of Washington is a state school, which means it is intellectually inferior, the teachers and researchers there are all idiots, and any research they produce is invalid — or so william was claiming when he tried to mock Sarah Palin for graduating from one.

When you look at william, you understand why it needs laws forcing quotas for hiring based on sexual orientation — there is no other way such an obvious incompetent and liar could hold a job.

Of course not, just like Bill Clinton never had sex with that woman.

It’s a pity you make gay people look so bad, william. Translation, its Obama’s fault for not blaming Republicans more.

No, Levi, the economy sucks because the same party that caused the recession and caused the crisis are still in power.

Democrats have been in control of BOTH houses of congress for almost FOUR YEARS now. The recession began a year after Democrats took over because of all the economy killing policies Democrats were promising, and businesses cannot recover because they have no idea what industry democrats are going to seize next, which catastrophic anti-business regulation democrats are going to enact next.

The first step towards real recovery is firing the Democrats who caused the mess in the first place, and repealing their fascist policies.

    william,

Gallup is in the business of selling its polls. Market forces are at work with Gallup. The Quinnipiac University Polling Unit is the gold standard among university units. Polls taken by one or two horse university departments with no track require a lot of disclosure if they want to avoid being regarded as sources ….. well ……. manipulated data. (Think man made global warming and discarded raw data.)

If you rely on just any old poll you can google and you rush out to quote it, you are the problem.

Funny how you and Tano are so poll struck. Has Ward Churchill done any polling yet?

Ndt is sounding more like gregory lee giusti by the minute. And as for “sexual slurs,” well first of all, it’s not a sexual slur, it’s a sexual practice. Second of all, teabaggers called themselves that before they were aware that it was also a sexual practice. Incependent Fox News polling has Obamas rating at one of his lows…after continuing to try to sell Obamacare. Another Failure. How the hopes have been dashed. I do expect Obama to now cross the isle and reach out to Republicans by nominating a conservative judge to replace Stevens. Remember he promised to be President of all the people and resolve the partisian differences. This is now the latest and newest way he can do that. Republicans should come forward with a list of those conservatives who have the judicial temperment, to help Obamas selection committee.

Not going to happen. Of course, Stevens are considers himself a conservative (he hasn’t changed, everybody else has), so I guess its all in how you define conservative.

Funny how this post’s whole point is a Gallup poll, and you’ve kept your polling suspicions quite mum on that.

I will explain what I wrote in #19 (Gallup is in the business of selling its polls. Market forces are at work with Gallup.)

Professional polling firms have a track record of how they poll, what their accuracy rate is, and they have long, detailed analysis of how the poll was constructed, implemented and interpreted. I do not “attack” Gallup because their methodology is fantastic and under scrutiny from the competition and smaller polling units.

The Wiser poll you linked asks questions which verge on polling racism. Any fool knows that such polling depends on the sample polled, the mood of the moment, and the likelihood of the respondent telling the truth. That is the absolute shakiest type of polling.

Yet wiser confidently writes a poll that shows “Approval of Marginalized Groups by Stength of Tea Party Approval Among Whites.” The Wiser poll finds that whites who agree that blacks are very intelligent are 46% disapproving of Tea Party, 28% approving of Tea Party (26% not accounted for) which tells us what?

How do you know you have a representative sample of whites? How do you know what the constant for the sample adjudging “very intelligent” is?

I will not belabor this, because to the average thinker, the problems with polling specific values is a mare’s nest. Few pollsters try it. The fact that Wiser labels blacks, Latinos, immigrants and homosexuals as “marginalized” groups among whites is telling enough.

How does a person like william even discover a poll like this? There must be a kid in a basement somewhere digging this stuff up and sending it to all the shills who will post it and run. Baloney is still baloney no matter how thick or thin you slice it.

Here is one beauty of an agree/disagree statement from the poll: “All undocumented immigrants in the U.S. should be deported immediately.” That is a classic push question loaded with ambiguities and permitting no chance to break down the issues. When you see items like that, you know you are dealing with amateurs.
