So, the social conservatives at the American Family Association (AFA) want you to boycott Home Depot because of that home improvement giant’s domestic partnership program and funding for Gay Pride festivals.
And the liberal busybodies at the Human Rights Campaign (HRC) can’t contain their rage because Target gave money to a pro-business PAC which ran ads promoting a Republican gubernatorial candidate who once said nice things about a band that included a rather mean-spirited, nasty and narrow-minded performer (whether Target or the candidate know about the performer’s hateful* statements has yet be shown).
So, stand up for these companies and against these narrow interest groups. Join me in shopping at Target this weekend. And if you need home improvement products, make sure to buy them at Home Depot!
*I looked them up on the web. They really are hateful. Meanwhile while some blogs have called the Republican gay-hating, the only evidence is their own prejudice — and nothing he has said. ADDENDUM: if Tom Emmer is gay-hating because he has said nice things about an anti-gay band, what does that make Barack Obama who campaigned alongside an anti-gay gospel singer?
Gay conservatives not only should patronize the stores but a counter demonstrations would let these enterprises the libs do no speak for the entire gay community.
insert ¨know¨between the words enterprises and the.
Even some of my far left friends think the outrage against Target has been blown out of proportion.
Awesome idea. Remember to get someone to record it, too. Youtube is our friend.
Buy condoms and lube. Oh, the irony.
‘Delusional Liberals’ at HRC need to give Tom Emmer a break, I don’t think he was aware that one of the band members had a hateful personality. Besides, the band member is on drugs probably and his rhetoric is insane, heh! But I am sure Tom Emmer is the sane one.
As for the ‘Delusional Social Conservatives’ at AFA, they need to chill out a bit. Because I am sure many American Patriots will still go to Target to buy stuff for their everyday needs, heh!
HRC and AFA don’t speak for Gay Patriots. Thanks Dan, for the important information.
Meanwhile, Fl. AG McCollum has sent out a mailer attacking Rick Scott which includes something to the effect that Scott can’t be a real Conservative because he has some sort of partnership with a Playboy site for gheys(?).
Yeah, I don’t know what that site is either.
I own way too many items manufactured in the People’s Republic of China to motivate myself to support boycotts.
Then again, when you buy stuff from China, you’re not financing the unions (read: mobs).
From Googling: Rick Scott is a significant shareholder in the Hispanic-targeted site Quepasa.com, and Quepasa has had (entirely separate) business relationships with Playboy and with the online dating service Zoosk, which includes same-sex listings. Additionally, like many sites with BBS forums categorized by theme, Quepasa has a forum specifically for “Gay and Lesbian Life.”
Yawn.
P.S. But incidentally, who the freakin’ fark decided that “Zoosk” would be a good brand name for a dating site NOT aimed at the Furries niche?
Tom Emmer went to a fundraiser this year for You Can Run But You Cannot Hide – a “ministry” that said:
““Muslims are calling for the executions of homosexuals in America. This just shows you they themselves are upholding the laws that are even in the Bible of the Judeo-Christian God, but they seem to be more moral than even the American Christians do, because these people are livid about enforcing their laws. They know homosexuality is an abomination.”
This is what Dean said on the radio. I’ve listened to his show, and he regularly rants about the homos. He also talked about Emmer being at his groups fundraisers. After getting called on his link to Dean, Emmer distanced himself, saying he didn’t support violence against gays. I don’t believe he wasn’t aware of Dean’s positions on this issue, because “the homosexuals” are a major topic on Dean’s radio show. This is a perfectly fair issue to be using against Emmer.
Emmer’s record in the legislature is consistantly anti-gay – opposing allowing municipalities to offer domestic partner benefits for example. Shouldn’t the republican position be for local control?
He’s also been rather vocal on the floor about opposing explicit AIDS education materials – because they were geared towards gay men.
I doubt Target was aware of Bradlee Dean and You Can Run But You Cannot Hide – but Emmer went to their fundraiser, and his campaign gave them money. Bradlee Dean and his supporters ARE part of Tom Emmer’s base.
Fair point about Obama and his appearance with McGlurkin.
Eva, my point here is not to defend Tom Emmer. And I hope you realize I haven’t said anything indicating that I back his candidacy. That he doesn’t favor allowing municipalities to decide on their own whether or not to adopt such policies is troubling to say the least.
His contact with Dean is troublesome, but unless we have evidence that he shares his anti-gay attitudes, it’s unfair to brand a corporation which supports a PAC which runs ads for the candidate who has attended a fundraiser for a bizarre ministry as anti-gay.
Thanks, Throbert. I read that last night, and read some of it a month ago and forgot. Why I get a mailing already debunked is beyond my comprehension.
Eva,
I don’t think so. The meme is that the band has called (or sung about) killing gays which is nowhere near what was actually said. This is sorta like the gay dumbasses ASSerting that Bush had gay concentration camps somewhere out yonder.
What’s particularly interesting to me is that many of the articles I sifted through did NOT reference the quote nor did they mention the name of the band or that leader’s name. I got to one article, on the boycotter’s FB page, where I had to follow three links to get to a FDL blog post which included a video clip of Madcow. Why is this information, if it proves that they call for killing gays, not right up front? Why isn’t it at the top of the page for folks coming to the game late?
Target is a Minnesota corporation – and they should have known the donation to MN Forward would be controversial (in order to support Emmer – a lightning rod of a candidate – not just on gay issues). In fact, the local media reported that Target execs were warned that this particular donation might cause PR problems for the corporation.
That being said, I don’t think Target is anti-gay – but I do think they made a poor decision to spend corporate dollars on this particular candidate. I feel the same way about Best Buy.
But, of course, context doesn’t mean a damn to the MediaMorons acolytes.
The local media haven’t covered Bradlee Dean as much as they should. And most of the coverage about the Target issue has been about Emmer’s opposition to gay marriage (also Obama’s position), though Emmer’s position is more extreme – supporting an amendment to the state constitution that also bans “legal equivalents”.
You can listen to Dean’s drivel every Saturday at 3-5 Central Daylight Time on AM 1280 the Patriot – and it’s on the web. The idiotic MNGOP gave Dean’s group a free table at one of their conventions.
Here’s some video of Dean’s sidekick Jake going after DFL candidate John Marty for supporting marriage equality – citing sodomy laws as a reason to oppose marriage equality:

Well, there is the fact that Target went after the Salvation Army and they are no longer ringing the bells at Christmas time. But see, Target has bargains. And I am a cheap guy. And always looking for a bargain. I don’t get these boycotts. It really shows how much trouble all these things are. And I did go to Target today, but they did not have what I am looking for. On to Walmart!
Eva, fair points all about Emmer. But, recall, Dean is not the issue here. But, then if he is, Reverend Wright should define Obama’s Administration. I mean, this is one crazy anti-gay band/ministry for whom a Republican candidate has shown sympathy (but we still don’t know how aware he was of their hateful antics) while that Democratic politicians regularly attended a church whose minister said some equally vile things about gays — as well as many other people.
Please cite the equally vile things that Rev. Wright said about gays (has Wright called for gays to be executed?). I was aware of many of the offensive things he said, but not there. Also, I’m no Obama defender. The issue here is Emmer, and his association with Bradlee Dean (and his followers). Also, Emmer’s record on gay issues goes far beyond Bradlee Dean.
Even the ex-gay group Exodus has condemned Bradlee Dean.
My problem with these people is they are pretended to speak for US, which they are not. They are presuming OUR voice and we need to tell them to stop. HRC is just a Democratic Party shill and is only forwarding the collectivist agenda, not that of freedom and prosperity. In addition, I am appalled at these people’s attempt to extort money by threatening boycotts they cannot deliver on, in our names. Furthermore, they want to be the gatekeeper for ANY contributions in the future. They need to be seriously challenged.
Brett, HRC’s conduct on this, is appalling, since it appears they are trying to get the “equal contribution” to be to HRC. I’d rather see it going to the Gay Chamber of Commerce, or something that would make sense for a business group.
Brett, HRC’s conduct on this, is appalling, since it appears they are trying to get the “equal contribution” to be to HRC.
Why is it appalling? It’s no different than what you are doing, attacking Emmer and playing the “I’m a minority victim, give me money” card.
Republicans don’t bother with gays and lesbians because they know gays and lesbians like you don’t think past your minority status, Eva. The Minnesota gubernatorial field is appalling in every respect on the DFL side and you’re sitting here screaming about a radio show and attacking Republicans left and right on your blog.
It’s pretty clear to everyone that your lesbian status dominates your thinking and is the only thing you consider relevant, so why not go over to the Obama Party and be the single-issue voter you clearly are? Why do you continue to give gays and lesbians a bad name with your obvious double standards, hypocrisy, and bigotry?
