Over at Powerline, John Hinderaker looks into the campaign against Target and concludes that it’s not just about its support of a PAC which backed a candidate who opposes gay marriage, but about preventing corporations from supporting right-of-center candidates opposing government regulation:
What is happening here is that the left is trying to bully companies into forgoing their constitutional right to advocate for their interests, as labor unions and countless non-profits do. Leftists are making an example of Target in hopes of intimidating other companies who fear the effects of higher taxes and mindless government regulation.
Read the whole thing.
This analysis corresponds with some of the conversations I have had with some of those who advocate a boycott of Target. In short, they’re just using the gay issue as a wedge against corporate donations. Wonder if they get this incensed about unions backing candidates.
If these guys had any integrity, they’d be going after the major backer of Jerry Brown’s gubernatorial campaign, a supposedly “grassroots” outfit funded primarily by unions.
