This Almost Makes Up for California

November 4, 2010 by B. Daniel Blatt

It just hit me that Wisconsin’s Paul Ryan will soon chair the House Budget Committee.  Paul Ryan, the smart, principled (and yes, fetching) Congressman committed to small government, chairing the Budget Committee!

No wonder he didn’t run for Senate.

Another plus for Paul Ryan–he took on that jackass Paul Krugman’s pathetic, inaccurate attack on his “Roadmap for America’s Future” and won the argument, proving that Krugman’s agenda is nothing more than discrediting any suggestion of reduced government spending, even if he has to lie and smear to try to pull it off.

I’m not totally happy about this. He did, actually, vote for TARP I, raising taxes on AIG execs and the government takeover of GM and Chrysler.

Hey, guess what else? Arlen Specter. Maybe Murky didn’t get hers (yet)… but he did. How humiliating to have betrayed one’s (alleged) principles – for the sake of the losing side.

I’m new to gaypatriot, a blog I’m delighted to have found, and this is my first comment. In defense of Paul Ryan (and I hope it is defense well placed), I can actually forgive not only Ryan or Bush, but any other Republican on TARP–despite being quite libertarian–for the simple reason that when faced with the possible domino collapse of all the major banks if it was not applied, I’m not certain even the most purist conservative (myself included) could have voted no. The auto takeover is troubling, but Ryan’s explanation is satisfactory for me in that, unlike any statist answering this tough question, he made a reasoned and specific case for his vote. As for AIG, he admits it was an error in judgment, and for the man who so brilliantly and boldly schooled Obama in his health care summit, and could debate any statist under the table, I’m willing to forgive one strike. Frankly, he’s my ideal presidential candidate other than Rubio or Bachman at this point.

Well said, Garrett. Very well said. Missed the comment criticizing Ryan for his TARP vote. And thank you for responding so quickly and succinctly

It gets better, Ron Paul will probably chair the monetary policy subcommittee.

#8: “It gets better, Ron Paul will probably chair the monetary policy subcommittee.”

Now, if we could just convince Jennifer Lopez to accept the nomination for Secretary of FUN!!! Wait…scratch that. I meant to jot that down on my wishlist for “Celebrity Government.”

(And if you MUST ask…YES, Adam Baldwin is the President and I’ve got Meryl Streep down for Secretary of State. Susan Sarandon was forced to resign under a cloud of scandal and incompetence from Speaker of the House.)

Dan, committee ranking member Ryan would be a GREAT choice to head up the House Budget Committee.

He’s got 10 yrs of experience, solid schooling on the issues and a telegenic presence that translates his intelligence and sincerity to viewers –the next House Budget Chair will have to be one part salesman, one part teacher, one part bunny-pulling magician… and the debt ceiling resolution will be just a starting point in his challenge.

Ryan can do all of that; he’s well qualified and a fair example of the talent that sits on the GOP House bench.

Let’s be honest. Representative Ryan is quite possibly the hottest, most attractive member of Congress. 🙂

Seriously though, he is smart and he is willing to admit when he’s wrong. He cares more about the will of the people–all the people, not just 50+1–and doing right by future generations then any other politician out there.
