Ms. Nancy’s Classless Exit

Posted by B. Daniel Blatt at 5:28 pm - January 5, 2011.

Contrasting the speech then-Minority Leader John Boehner gave in 2007 introducing the then-new House Speaker Nancy Pelosi with the one Minority Leader Pelosi  gave today introducing Speaker Boehner, Byron York points out:

There were no laundry lists, no talking points.  Following that brief statement, Boehner went on to pay tribute to “the battle of ideas” that takes place in a democracy, and then he handed the gavel to Pelosi.  That was it.

Read the whole thing.  In the contrast to the brief speech the Republican gave, the former Speaker blathered on and on, offering a laundry list of Democratic accomplishments, on a day when Republicans were taking power in the House.  This was neither the time nor the place for Democratic grandstanding.

But, well, what can you expect from the current crop of Democrats.  Given Ms. Nancy’s behavior today, maybe we should retain our Pelosi Watch category, to keep an eye on this hyperpartisan who couldn’t even keep her caucus united in the vote for Speaker.  Nineteen Democrats . . .

. . . abandoned their party’s pick for speaker of the House, Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.), a sign of their concerns about supporting the unpopular former speaker and of the difficulty she will have in marshaling her forces in legislative battles to come in the next two years. . . .

. . . the anti-Pelosi tally dwarfed the number of protest votes cast against leaders of both parties in the recent past, which never break into double digits.

Wonder how many of those 19 will be voting next week to repeal Obamacare.

Loved Michelle Malkin’s take on Nancy’s self-aggrandizing departure:

Pelosi won’t shut up: She’s breaking her arm patting herself on the back as 1st woman speaker, 1st Italian American speaker. Waves around kiddie human shields and cites litany of Nanny State “achievements” to spite GOP. Blathers about “fair prosperity.”

Update 2:00pm Eastern. She’s still going. Bitter clinger, clinging bitterly.

This is why we need someone with steel spine and no mercy.

Do hope House Republicans remember this spectacle in the coming months and treat Ms. Nancy accordingly.

FROM THE COMMENTS:  Seems our reader  V the K sees Ms. Nancy’s attempt to rain on the Republicans’ parade as a reminder just how she’ll behave in the minority and how they should react:

Republicans should realize that they are going to take the same amount of crap from the liberal media no matter how much or how little they cut; so they should GO BIG OR GO HOME!

Good advice.

  5. “fair prosperity”

    ———–

That’s another ‘weasel term’. What she means to say is that she believes that ‘Americans have a right to Equality of Outcome’. (Socialism)

To assume by the outcome of a competition that an injustice has occurred, is unfair. You have to stereotype a group of people to commit this injustice. If you single-out a group of people and assume that they are collectively guilty of a crime (without proof of guilt), and then use the power of government to “correct” that PERCEIVED crime, then you have discriminated against that group of people.

Pelosi and company like to accuse “rich people” of indirectly stealing from “poor people”, but they never bother to provide evidence of wrong doing. They decide that studying the outcome alone, a crime ‘must have’ occurred.

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bill_of_attainder

A bill of attainder (also known as an act of attainder or writ of attainder) is an act of a legislature declaring a person or group of persons guilty of some crime and punishing them without benefit of a judicial trial.

    -

*According to the Civil Rights Act of 1964, the policy of racial discrimination practiced in the United States was an example of a ‘Bill of Attainder’.

  6. Minority leader Pelosi remains in deep denial why she is in fact minority leader Pelosi; she is an ungrateful, power hungry bitch who refuses to let go of her power. Hence, her public rebuke from her caucus today as they threw egg on her & face & hit a bulls-eye. She, on the other hand, kept blathering about the Nanny State & her so-called “achievements.” Those Nanny State achievements will remain a tar put for the Democrat Party until they are repealed. ObamaCare will remain front & center for the next 2 years while the Democrats–including the arrogant Pelosi–try to change the subject to jobs, another tar pit for the Democrats. Nancy Pelosi needs to go away back to San Francisco to record her Ethel Merman Disco Album.
Staying in Congress will on diminish her own standing & power.

The Democrat Party remains in disarray shown by the rebuke; it’s not going to get better for the next 2 years given Obama is not leader & Pelosi will want to keep the powers of Speaker of the House. Pelosi’s presence will continue to tear the Democrats apart.

  7. Hell that woman went “on and on” like Gladys Knight and the Pips…… Ya know while I was listening to Pelosi read off the laundry list of legislation she helped pass, I couldn’t help but first think both she and the democrats just flat out refuse to acknowledge facts. However, when she finally finished up with her diatribe, it was clear how democrats, especially their leadership, are just frickin delusional… They can’t understand it was precisely due to the legislation they’ve passed over the last four years, that they got their asses handed to them last November.

  8. Nancy does have accomplishments.

She and her party (and more than a few Republicans) have managed over the last few decades to comprehensively wreck this country.

If reducing the nation to a fiscal and social basket case is the goal then they’ve done one helluva job.

“Hello, I am Nancy Pelosi, and I have been a complete failure as Speaker of the House. I tried to implement my radical leftist ideology, but the American people are just too brilliant and saw right through my masterful ploy. My goal of ruining this country and exterminating humanity has been cut short this time, but I’ll get you my pretty! And your little dog, too! HAHAHAHAHAH AHHAHHAH!”

  16. I got this e-mail from Levi and I thought I would share it:

Well, I think that if you believe that a political/media celebrity like Byron York has anything worthwhile to say about how ordinary Americans view the wealth distribution in this country, then you’re not very bright. People in York’s position, and this goes for both Christians and conservatives, always view themselves as the regular guy, when in truth they’re part of a very small and very exclusive elite that hasn’t had regular guy kind of problems for years, if not decades.

Take his initial premise – ‘There were no laundry lists, no talking points.  Following that brief statement, Boehner went on to pay tribute to “the battle of ideas” that takes place in a democracy, and then he handed the gavel to Pelosi.  That was it.’ – that right there shows exactly how out of touch someone like Byron York is.

People, as a general rule, aren’t letting “the battle of ideas” get them down; they’re worried about gas prices, phone bills, student loans, and stagnant wages. I feel a little more qualified to talk about this than Byron York, since I work with other people in similar situations, and I talk to customers every day about their similar situations, and Byron York spends his time going to cocktail parties and gossiping about public officials.

This kind of income inequality is not good for a society, and has been a pretty reliable indicator of bad things to come for a country throughout history. We’re practically an aristocracy, and people like York pay their way in that scheme by insisting that all these bad indicators are actually good ones! Don’t listen to people like him, or any other figure in his position, especially when their source is ‘my sense.’

A final thought; if lots of wealth is concentrated in a small percentage of the population, then conservative economic theory should mean that these extremely wealthy people should be providing all kinds of economic opportunities for the rest of the country. Well, it’s as inequal right now as it’s ever been, and unemployment is nearly ten percent. That should put a nail in trickle down economics, shouldn’t it people?

Nancy Pelosi is the perfect ideal of someone who had a sense of the “regular guy” and the determination to create all kinds of opportunities for the rest of the country. She has been involved in the trickle down part of business to great effect. In fact, speaking of the ten percent unemployment, she has said: “Let them stomp grapes.” If we could be more like France and expand our wine drinking, our peasantry could all be employed and we could raise the standard of living for all of our winos who would be able to pass out on pinot noir.

This strangely like his attack on Michael Barone on a different thread.

“….. then conservative economic theory should mean that these extremely wealthy people should be providing all kinds of economic opportunities for the rest of the country.”

People like Levi have been confused into believing the term entitlement translates to equality.

  21. Spartann,

Surcame is a very important ethnic term. It was used by slaves who died while working the sugar plantations in the east indies. ‘sugar cane’ and ‘succumb’ were mashed together and when a slave died in the field it was said he surcame.

When you have asshole liberals forcing them to pay for the 20% to stay at home and watch Oprah, there’s your “economic opportunities”. Now Chairman Obama intends to rule by decree, like his f*ck buddy Chavez. Unless he’s stopped by Republicans and the USSC, we’re in for an even worse ride than we have been the past two years.

20%? You think that 20% of the population, when we’re at 10% unemployment in a recession and 3-5% unemployment during healthy economic periods, just want to sit at home, watch Oprah, and have the government pay for everything?

These kinds of caricatures are completely illogical and self-serving. There is entitlement abuse to be sure, but we are not to the point of subsidizing couch potatoes. Do you mean to say that the wealthy, who are wealthier than they ever have been and who are enjoying the lowest tax rates in decades, are holding back their gifts to the economy because they’re so upset about welfare queens? That really makes sense in your head?

There are two novels that can change a bookish fourteen-year old’s life: The Lord of the Rings and Atlas Shrugged. One is a childish fantasy that often engenders a lifelong obsession with its unbelievable heroes, leading to an emotionally stunted, socially crippled adulthood, unable to deal with the real world. The other, of course, involves orcs.
