To remember the Gipper on the hundredth anniversary of his birth, I headed up earlier today to the Hollywood Walk of Fame where a blog reader joined me as we placed four red roses together with some American flags on his star. Red is Nancy’s favorite color.
As we stood there and people passed, taking note of the flowers, they recalled that today was Ronald Wilson Reagan’s centennial. Apparently, the news media, the heirs of those who disparaged this great man when he served as the nation’s chief executive, did their due diligence as this great day approached.
To many of us Reagan-lovers, today like a holiday. And indeed it was, giving us another chance to commemorate the vision and accomplishments of this graceful and gallant great man.
Dan-
Great job commemorating Reagan’s 100th today!!!!
I think this post is a great way to close the day, so I’ll simply add this:
These are the words on Reagan’s gravesite at the Reagan Library — I know in my heart that man is good. That what is right will always eventually triumph. And there’s purpose and worth to each and every life.
President Reagan used those words in his speech delivered at the Library’s opening in 1991.
Awesome.
Nice.
Very moving Bruce and like Bruce stated BDB super closing words and photo
Great tribute to the greatest President!! Thank you!
Where is his star located?
Something good to know when touristy-friends are in town.
All I’ve seen today is shade from the gay blogs (Towleroad, Bilerico) Bilerico’s 2nd Reagan is evil post of the day had to outdo the first and photoshop him with red eyes.
UGH. Somehow AIDS is a bigger tragedy (in hindsight, of course) than most of the world in the previous 4 decades falling to Communism.
More posts about gay issues would be appreciated here. I know it’s a political blog, but it’s also a gay blog as well and we’re in between political cycles. At least Kevin at HillBuzz writes about go-go boys and gay bars… 🙂
One of the things I’m noticing in the wall-to-wall Reagan fetishism as of late is that there is a lot of focus on the guy’s personality and his speech-giving performances…. and not so much a recounting of his policies or achievements. Understandable, given that Reagan raised taxes, granted amnesty to illegals, increased the deficit, and grew the size of government – all things that the modern conservative movement swears is going to lead us into a ravine.
Reagan wasn’t so popular as he left office. George Bush’s one term presidency was a reflection of that. That Reagan is so intensely idolized by the conservative movement is the result of a revisionist history media campaign by the GOP that started in the late 90s, when Reagan was dealing with a disease and no one really wanted to be criticizing the sick old guy. It’s a good thing that conservatives can be lead around like sheep, believing that big government and deficits are the worst things ever while at the same time thinking that Ronald Reagan – a big government, deficit increasing Republican – was the greatest President of all time.
I fully expect a similar campaign for George W. Bush down the road.
“Reagan wasn’t so popular as he left office.”
Well, he sure is now, isn’t he? In fact, the left loves him more than ever since they believe that attaching Obama to Reagan will somehow save Obama’s failed Presidency.
Ouch.
George Bush’s one-term presidency, Levi? The first George Bush would have never been elected president if not for the Gipper’s popularity. He ran as Reagan’s anointed successor as if his victory would assure the Gipper’s 3rd term, then he repudiated that legacy by tapping Dick Darman to head OMB and by raising taxes.
Had he held true to the Gipper’s legacy, he would likely have enjoyed two terms in office.
Ugly, the Gipper’s star is on the south side of Hollywood Blvd, about 20 yards east of Cahuenga.
