Reader Peter Hughes alerted me to Ann Coulter’s latest column, one of the simultaneously funniest and most insightful commentaries on current events I’ve read all year. Currently finishing her next book and is thus
. . . only able to catch bits and pieces of the news this month, but, based on what I’ve heard from the mainstream media, I’m pretty sure the conservative movement is now being led either by Jared Loughner or GOProud’s president, Chris Barron.
Pretty much sums up their coverage of the first six weeks of this year. A deranged Tea Party member shot up a rally featuring a Democratic Congresswoman while CPAC is all about GOProud. Then, she joins Sarah Palin, albeit in a much different tone, in welcoming gay conservatives into the movement:
No, we don’t generally care for identity politics of any sort, much less hearing about people’s sex lives, even Nino Scalia’s. (And judging by the number of children he has, it’s pretty active.) Conservatives believe in individual rights, low tax rates, fighting terrorism and punishing criminals — so do gays! They also happen to believe Judy Garland was the most underappreciated and misunderstood person in the history of show business. I don’t think most gays care about gay marriage; they like going to the gay marriage meeting because it’s a good way to meet other gays.
Read the whole thing.
Stop! Stop! You’re killing meh!
You left out this welcoming line: “I’m against gay marriage, but that’s no offense to gays. It is just in defense of a crucial linchpin of civilization.” A real friend there!
Wow. Nothing says “we don’t believe in identity politics” like stereotyping gay men as believing “Judy Garland was the most underappreciated and misunderstood person in the history of show business.” But I know. She was “joking.” God, can’t you limp-wristed, swishy fags take a joke?
I don’t want to go off topic Countervail, but if I–as a stright guy–dropped that kind of language on you, what would happen?
I never got the Judy Garland fascination but then, as I’ve said, I never got my gay membership guide.
Judy who?
@AF_Vet I probably would have been very irked at how you were stereotyping and what an ugly sentiment you presented. It would be like me saying all Air Force guys are pussies compared to the rest of the branches with their faggoty flight suits and Ray Ban sunglasses but then again you’re a self-proclaimed “straight guy” so you must swill beer, burp and fart at inappropriate times, cheat on your wife (who is somehow a babe while you’re a blue collar overweight slob with hang-ups). That’s how stereotypes work.
It still flabbergasts me that with all the backhanded slights from this woman, who took GOProud money to speak and then roundly disavowed any support for the group, you could try to characterize her words or actions as “welcoming” gay conservatives into the movement. This is the same woman who made it very clear she didn’t support gay men and women in the military because we were all somehow Bradley Mannings just waiting to happen. Some choice words from her post on the matter includes:
“Isn’t that in the Army Code of Conduct? You must follow orders at all times. Exceptions will be made for servicemen in an awkward place. Now, who wants a hug? Waitress! Three more apple-tinis!””
“What constitutes being “openly” gay now? Bringing a spice rack to basic training? Attending morning drills decked out as a Cher impersonator? Following Anderson Cooper on Twitter?”
“Also, U.S. military, have you seen a picture of Bradley Manning? The photo I’ve seen is only from the waist up, but you get the feeling that he’s wearing butt-less chaps underneath.”
“With any luck, Bradley’s court-martial will be gayer than a Liza Minelli wedding. It could be the first court-martial in U.S. history to feature ice sculptures and a “Wizard of Oz”-themed gazebo. “Are you going to Bradley’s court-martial? I hear Patti LaBelle is going to sing!””
She’s also firmly against gay marriage. She has said in the past that Rick Santorum’s comparison of gay sex being akin to bestiality is an “indisputably true point,” and that sexually active gay men “should feel bad about it.”
How is it with all she’s said against gay issues GayPatriot can still somehow see her as welcoming gay conservatives? If anything she simply welcomes conservatives, and like the majority of other conservatives at CPAC it seems she has no use or care for gay issues except to use them as some butt of a lame, crude joke.
Yea, I don’t have a problem with the Judy Garland stereotype as much as I do with the last part of the excerpted statement about gays not really wanting marriage. As usual, she just assumes that all gays are interested in are hookups and meaningless sex, that’s the only reason we could possibly want to go to gay marriage rallies!
Yea, she’s a “comedian” of sorts, I get it. But a lot of people don’t see her that way, and her stereotyping of gays in such a political setting is annoying.
And she obviously has that right, and the fact that she annoys me doesn’t mean that much, I just don’t know why a gay group, of any sort, would pay to have her belittle them, in “jest” or otherwise. More power to em though. They’re getting all the press they could ever dream of.
Gosh! Where could she possibly get that idea?
I probably would have been very irked at how you were stereotyping and what an ugly sentiment you presented.
Which is hilarious, because Countervail and his fellow hatemongering bigots are more than happy to stereotype and present ugly sentiment in regard to gay conservatives.
Typical. Countervail is a coward who wants to dish but runs away crying and bawling when he gets a dose of his own medicine. Coulter calls that out, and that’s why Countervail is crying and whining. Poor little coward can’t stand his hypocrisy and lies being exposed.
This is the same woman who made it very clear she didn’t support gay men and women in the military because we were all somehow Bradley Mannings just waiting to happen.
Absolutely.
That’s because you screamed “homophobia” when Manning was first called out and are now calling his imprisonment “torture.
The only way condemnation and criticism of Manning could be “homophobia” is if his behavior is natural for all gays.
Same with child molestation and rape or workplace sexual harassment. Since gays and lesbians are screaming “homophobia” when gay and lesbian people are caught doing these things and facing the consequences, it’s obvious that child molestation and rape and workplace sexual harassment are absolutely normal and inherent behavior for gays and lesbians.
Ann Coulter does a magnificent job of calling out the fact, Countervail, that you and your fellow liberal gays and lesbians will excuse anything, and we mean ANYTHING, if another gay and lesbian person does it.
Only, every Gay Pride parade along with most works of gay fiction, most gay art, the thriving bath house industry, the appointment of a gay safe school czar who encourages teenagers to have sex with men they meet in public restrooms…
If gays want to stop being stereotyped as promiscuous and irresponsible… then stop celebrating promiscuity and irresponsibility.
I mean, seriously guys, if you go around proclaiming that monogamy and commitment are “oppressive” and “unrealistic,” why are you so surprised that people actually believe you?
As always, Countervail totally walks away from context. You can read Coulter’s Feb. 9 column in which this appeared:
All of this proves that Countervail is a true blue Progressive. Progressives have no sense of humor. They only laugh when someone is being mean to those they despise. Therefore, Countervail reads this and goes into a rage caused by paroxysms of political correctness laced with the fear that he is being ridiculed.
Countervail also forgets that acceptable (read: flaming liberal) commentators and comedians like Margaret Cho can spew their venom and heterophobia, but that’s OK because “she’s one of us.”
I frankly lost all respect for Cho when she said that Laura Bush’s genitalia smelled like Lysol. She should talk – hers probaby smells like kimchee, but I’m too nice of a guy to say that.
Sorry, couldn’t resist. 😉
Regards,
Peter H.
Thank you for not disguising your hatred in your reply to me countervail. And bonus points for working in the word “faggoty”.
By the way…something tells me you’ve never been anywhere NEAR a military person in your life.
And thank you for the stereotypes of what you feel straight guys must be like.
Your honesty is refreshing. Your hatred and ignorance…not so much.
“
”
Well Peter H., like you I’m too nice to say what I would really like to about Ms. Cho…mainly that she’s a c_nt. But that’s also mainly because she lacks depth and warmth…
Oh, and countervail…as to your snarky little non-reply to my honest question: Thanks for not disguising your hatred of me, or my choice of military service. And bonus points for working in the word “f_ggoty” in said non-reply. Kudos to you sir.
It’s also nice to experince firsthand your stereotype of what you think straight guys should act like.
Your honesty is refreshing. Your hatred and ignorance, not so much.
@AF_Vet I did answer you. In a very lengthy way. Which I guess you and your fellow posters here didn’t read well enough and in a considerate matter to understand.
It doesn’t matter whether you’re Ann Coulter, who the conservative gays liken as a gay icon without much critical consideration as to why, or you, a self-proclaimed gay-friendly(?) heterosexual Air Force guy. When you say stupid stereotyping things, you should understand it’s offensive. I in turn, and I did preface it with “It would be like me saying,” posted some similarly ugly stereotyped sentiments. You couldn’t conclude whether I do or don’t believe those things (I don’t for the record). Why would you be so quick to assume that was how I felt when someone like Ann Coulter does the exact same thing but you all give her the benefit of the doubt about her sentiments on gay issues?
Do you realize now that denigrating comments based in stereotype really have no place in a political dialogue if we’re to get to the heart of issues? Ann Coulter has made it clear time and time and time again that she has no empathy for any issue that is specific to gay men and women. She does not support gay marriage, she does not want gay men and women in the military, and as I mention above she makes it clear that she likens gay sex to bestiality and sexually active gay men “should feel bad about it.” She represents the main sentiment of most CPAC attendees. They are happy to have you in the tent as long as you leave everything gay on the coat rack at the door. They don’t want to think about gay issues, they certain don’t want to debate gay issues and they definitely do not support them.
What exactly has Ann Coulter ever done that would give you any indication she welcomes gay conservatives in the movement when every public sentiment she’s ever uttered makes it clear there’s nothing gay she supports. She’s happy to take gay money, she’s happy to have gay people support the same conservative ideas she does, but she has made it more than clear the flow of support does not extend back to “the gays.”
“a self-proclaimed gay-friendly(?) heterosexual Air Force guy.”
You can remove the question mark.
You still dodged my initial question: If you as a gay man (?) can drop the “F” bomb (and I would assume, ostensibly the “Q” bomb as well), would you get angry if straight people used the word?
What was your reaction when Ann Coulter used ‘faggot’ in reference to John Edwards? I’m assuming you were in the ‘offended’ camp.
Simply, it’s the same rule of thumb for the use of the N-word by blacks and non-blacks: “If one group is allowed to use a word with impunity, then don’t be upset when another group uses it.”
And no…I’m not asking for permission by any one group to use an offensive word because they themselves use it.
Northdallas said “it’s obvious that child molestation and rape and workplace sexual harassment are absolutely normal and inherent behavior for gays and lesbians.”.
You say you’re gay so this must be an admission that child molestation, rape, and workplace sexual harrassement are absolutely normal and inherenet behaviors for you.
