June 10, 2011 by B. Daniel Blatt

Keeping a budget balanced is a lot like preserving virtue — you have to learn to say “no.”

I remember when the Gipper balanced the budget. That was a great day. also I seem to remember it rained skittles.

Yes, I too remember that day, Tim, the very day, the Gipper served concurrently in the White House as Republicans held the majority in the U.S. House of Representatives.

Yes, a pity the next day DC was wiped out, luckily the X-men saved the day and rebuilt the town but the cost was staggering and since everyone was mind wiped we all blamed it on Reagan’s policies.

I jest of course Dan but hero worship of something that never happened is silly, Reagan never balanced the budget and none of his focus was really on that task. He focused on the cold war, and economic stimulation and the result were (at the time) staggering growth in the national debt. He also raised taxes, blustered at enemies while withdrawing troops, and whose administration traded guns with Iran in exchange for hostages and concessions. I still respect the man, and I remember how he lifted the nation with his words while engaging in the dirty business of politics.

Tim, I know he didn’t. And assumed you were jesting. That’s why I responded the way I did. yes, it’s a great disappointment that he didn’t balance the budget, but then again, he faced off against a spendthrift Democrat at the helm of the House.

No second guessing history Dan, it happened, there were consequences and we move on, learning lessons as we go. But this false narrative that has arisen is toxic. Let’s not alter history more than we have to.. if possible

Good point, Tim. But, even Reagan expressed regret that he never balanced the budget. . .

Well he’s dead now, time for us to keep trudging on. If he had balanced the budget we would never have scared the Russians with all the billions we wasted on a missile defense shield that never worked and the USSR might never have fallen.
