Watching the latest Obama campaign web video, Jim Geraghty observes, “Obama is dealing with the fact that he doesn’t have much of a record to run on by asserting that such a record is there — i.e, ‘progress’ and ‘change’ without ever trying to make the argument that Americans are indeed better off now than they were four years ago.”
“One year from now,” the ad warns, “all our progress could be erased.” Given how the Obama Democrats define progress nowadays, I agree with politicaljunkiemom who says, “Please, bring out the good erasers.”
The ad fails to specify what exactly that progress is, save the promise of change, whatever that means. (Geraghty does identify some of the progress made since Obama took office.) Ed Morrissey believes that the “ad reveals the core election strategy for Team Obama — fear“:
The ad reveals the core election strategy for Team Obama — fear. “Oooh, without me, America will be scary!“ This strategy comes as no surprise, because after Obama’s record of incompetence and failure, fear is all they have left.
Wondering if more conservatives will be linking this ad to mock it than will Obama supporters to herald its message.
Obama is desperate; he has to run on anarchy & discord with class warfare & demagoguery. Obama does not want 2012 to be a referendum on him since everything he’s touched has turned to crap.
Good luck with that Barry O even with the MSM behind him the people are going to judge Obama by his policies–radioactive as they are.
“One year from now all our progress could be erased.” Yeah, don’t wanna roll back all the nothing you did the last four years do we?
Not as bad as I thought, having seen the video embedded on different blogs today, but it does smack of desperation.
Desperation a year out? Not a good sign for the incumbent administration.
Indeed. It’s the antithesis of Reagan’s “Morning in America” ads of 1984. Normally an incumbent in good standing runs on their record, including spelling out their accomplishments, and not general fear of the “other guy”. Such tactics can move a couple of points in the polls but I don’t think it’s very successful in presidential elections. You know what this reminds me of? Bush Sr.’s desperate ads in 1992.
From the below post:
This ad confirms this. It appeals to what image people have of Obama and the Democrats (i.e. their emotions), or what image Obama had in 2008 that they are trying to rebuild. This ad is likely targeted to people who base their vote on image and not record or policy, as the 2008 election demonstrated that many people voted for Obama’s image (the image of him his campaign built), because he had no record to run on. It was basically a cult of personality.
To clarify my previous comment:
Since Obama’s 2008 campaign worked so well (i.e. the cult of personality or Obama’s image), and since Obama does not have a good record, Obama’s current campaign is trying to build up his image again. That is, the 2008 campaign showed them (Obama’s campaign) that (some) people vote based on image, so many people will also vote that way again. And this ad looks like an attempt to rebuild Obama’s image.
Obama’s 1st real campaign commercial tells you what his greatest concern for the country is — not the jobs, prosperity and opportunity he has destroyed, but that he’s lost all his fans! That people dont appreciate what he’s done to destroy the American dream so he could make people dependent on government.
Problem is that Democrats HAVE succeeded in destroying so many lives, so much prosperity, so much opportunity and in making so many people wards of the state that 42% STILL approve of him because they’re terrified of losing their handouts.
THANKS for the link! I’ve read your site for quite some time and am flattered!
