Giving Thanks for the United States of America

November 23, 2011 by GayPatriot

I’m glad I stumbled upon this item in the Wall Street Journal today.

Any one whose labors take him into the far reaches of the country, as ours lately have done, is bound to mark how the years have made the land grow fruitful.

This is indeed a big country, a rich country, in a way no array of figures can measure and so in a way past belief of those who have not seen it. Even those who journey through its Northeastern complex, into the Southern lands, across the central plains and to its Western slopes can only glimpse a measure of the bounty of America.

And a traveler cannot but be struck on his journey by the thought that this country, one day, can be even greater. America, though many know it not, is one of the great underdeveloped countries of the world; what it reaches for exceeds by far what it has grasped.

<....>

We can remind ourselves that for all our social discord we yet remain the longest enduring society of free men governing themselves without benefit of kings or dictators. Being so, we are the marvel and the mystery of the world, for that enduring liberty is no less a blessing than the abundance of the earth.

Happy Thanksgiving everyone!

the longest enduring society of free men governing themselves without benefit of kings or dictators

A wonderful achievement indeed. On the one hand, you should bear in mind that the nation from which yours is ultimately descended was the first to radically curb the power of kings without resorting to beheading them. To a certain extent, you are (after the Newtonian fashion) standing on the shoulders of giants.

Against this, that you managed to avoid the excesses and horrors into which the French descended – without first having them as a lesson and example of what to avoid – is and will always remain inestimably to America’s credit.

I no longer have a sunny outlook for the United States. We are in a state of decline, and even with a Republican President next year, I don’t foresee any way out of the abyss.

A bit of trivia: Thanksgiving was actually celebrated by the Spanish in 1565 in the area of St. Augustine, FL.

ONE WAY TO GRANT A PRESIDENTIAL PARDON TO THANKSGIVING TURKEYS:

Talk about the spared turkey as “lucky.” Note that your family, in a photo op, will deliver “unlucky” turkeys to a food bank.

Make a mocking, “funny” Sign of the Cross over the pardoned bird—an obvious disregard for the importance of this sacred symbol for Catholics and people of faith.

Disregard your daughters, standing beside you in bored complacency. Instead, focus your attention on the cameras.

Use the opportunity to obliquely criticize the United States Congress. Say things like “Some of you know that recently I’ve been taking a series of executive actions that don’t require congressional approval. Well, here’s another one.”

Use the opportunity to criticize the media. Say things like “They received the most important part of media training, which involves learning to gobble without saying anything.”

Never mention God, or thanks, or grace, or the American people. Never mention anything noble. Keep the attention on yourself.

ANOTHER WAY TO GRANT A PRESIDENTIAL PARDON TO THANKSGIVING TURKEYS:

Thank the men and women in uniform and talk about how proud you are of them.

Thank the armies of compassion—volunteers who feed the hungry and shelter the poor, teachers and nurses and pastors and firefighters, and others who serve their neighbors and better their communities.

Thank your wonderful and supportive family, and talk about the blessing they have been in your life.

Thank your wife for her love.

Thank your two daughters, “Thanksgiving blessings” some 27 years ago.
Express your thanks that your mother is doing well.

Express your thanks for a new son-in-law at the dinner table this year.
Thank the American people for the tremendous privilege of serving as President.

Wish all Americans a Happy Thanksgiving, and ask God to bless them.

I cleave to the second version. Far too many moral relativists insist that there is no religion in giving thanks. You just pause for a moment and take deep, smug satisfaction in how many stuffed olives you have on the table.

God bless the dedicated GayPatriot providers for an exceptional site and God bless each and every one who comes here as a guest. May the light of reason and the perseverance of goodwill shine down on all.

RE: RediWhip “Oil or cream?” ad.
Well if it is, in fact, oil (Cool Whip), I’ll go for the oil. It just tastes better.

Our pumpkin pie had some sort of spicy stuff in it. It was very zippy. A great afternoon and evening — until somebody had to start pontificating about those terrible rich people who “sit at the head of the table and want to take all the pie.”

My friends can make a Left-wing sermonette out of almost any occasion. I had to regain my sanity by returning to Gay Patriot immediately upon my return home.

Some jackass commented on Facebook: “whats more patriotic? camping in front of a retail store? or in a park to fight against inequality?”

Given that those camping in front of retail stores are helping to keep people employed and the Occupussies have helped people lose jobs, I’d have to say the former are more patriotic. They’re doing more for employment than the SCOAMF, I’ll wager. Further, they’re doing more for the economy than the spoiled brats who have to manufacture Inequality.

Same jackass suggested that if I don’t like the disease spreading anti-Semites, I should protest them. My response was that I tend to do things that are actually productive like going to school to learn skills which help people.

18: So, these people wouldn’t have jobs, the products wouldn’t be there and the buying public wouldn’t buy if the stores opened on Friday morning instead of Thursday night or even afternoon?

Thanksgiving is one of the holidays That I’m very thankful I can celebrate with enjoyment – I have a day off from my job and I’m able to spend it with friends and family.

It’s not too far back to recall Thanksgiving as a day day when hardly anything was open. The idea of a retail store being open on Thanksgiving day was unheard of and it gas almost everyone a chance to just stop, enjoy the day and take a beather.
