Two days after Sarah Palin’s daughter called someone a “f***ot” on Facebook — and after one daughter apologized for the remarks, HRC released this statement:
The Human Rights Campaign (HRC) – the nation’s largest lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) civil rights organization – for the second day called on former Republican Vice Presidential candidate and current reality TV show star Sarah Palin to come out against the kind of anti-LGBT bullying and harassment sadly typified by her 16-year-old daughter’s posting on Facebook. Willow Palin has since deleted her Facebook page and Bristol Palin has apologized for their behavior, but Sarah Palin has said nothing.
“Sarah Palin’s daughter seems to know when an apology is in order, why doesn’t she?” said HRC Vice President of Communications Fred Sainz. “As a mother, she should know to speak up when a child makes hateful remarks, particularly in this cyber age. Anti-LGBT bullying needs to stop and Sarah Palin should be a part of making that happen.”
Now, two days after Dan Savage, a year older than Mrs. Palin (who herself did not speak the word), used the same slur against a gay conservative organization, they remain silent. (At the close of this post, I include a screen capture of my search of their web-site for “Dan Savage”.)
Mr. Savage has not apologized for his use of the term, nor as best as I (a non-Twitter user) can determine has not deleted his tweet.
Last night (Pacific time), I sent this letter to Charles Joughin, listed on HRC’s press page as their press contact:
Please note I am cc-ing this to my co-blogger Bruce Carroll.
As you may know, I blog at GayPatriot.net. Back in November 2010, in this release (http://www.hrc.org/press-releases/entry/hrc-to-sarah-palin-two-days-of-silence-will-you-speak-up) and this blog post (http://www.hrc.org/blog/entry/hrc-to-sarah-palin-use-daughters-facebook-slur-as-teachable-moment), HRC called on Sarah Palin to address her daughter’s use of the term, “faggot.”
Now, a prominent gay man, Dan Savage, himself a year older than Governor Palin, has used the same term to slur a whole class of gay people, gay Republicans preferring Mr. Romney to Mr. Obama in the upcoming presidential contest.
Please tell me how HRC plans to respond to this disparaging reference. Will your organization fault Mr. Savage for making such “hateful remarks” (as per your release on the younger Palin’s use of the same slur)? Will you be calling on him to apologize as did Willow Palin?
I look forward to hearing from you.
All the best,
(B. Daniel Blatt)
I have not heard back from him — or anyone at HRC.
