The case against gay marriage

July 7, 2012 by B. Daniel Blatt

“Rumor has it that retiring Massachusetts Rep. Barney Frank and his longtime partner James Ready are tying the knot this weekend.”

(Via Dan Riehl.)

Maybe it we keep this hush-hush, we could avoid the public relations disaster this story represents for gay marriage advocates.

FROM THE COMMENTS:  Agreeing with me that “we need a sense of humour here”, Pop Art, like yours truly, is “not wishing ill on Bawney and his hubby. If anything, I hold out hope that with making this commitment (again), maybe he’ll become a slightly decent person in the process. But other than that I’m yawning and rolling my eyes slightly at this news.”

Yes, maybe marriage will make him a better person — as it has done for many men.

Just curious, but why would this be a disaster for gay marriage advocates? Was it a disaster for heterosexual marriage when Rush Limbaugh entered into his third straight marriage? You may not like Barney’s politics and if I am not mistaken, isn’t he retiring? Why not wish he and his longtime partner congratulations? Isn’t that possible?

Because, David, Barney is far more odious character than Rush Limbaugh. And because gay marriage is a relative novelty in popular consciousness with most people not having a strong opinion one way or the other. Associating this new notion with a mean-spirited politician is not a good way to promote it.

Do hope you detected the note of humor in this post.

I remember some years ago when President Bush had to have a minor surgical procedure to remove polyps from his colon. This happened just shortly before the annual series of Pride parades. At the time, I thought that there was no way that the gay left would be able to resist mocking the President. They lack maturity and decency and are too caught in the grip of their ideology to hold their tongues, let alone to express compassion and respect for someone who dealt with a medical problem.

And now there’s you. You couldn’t just congratulate Rep. Frank on an important life event and wish him well. No, he is a lefty and he disagrees with Dan Blatt, so obviously the thing to do is to deride him on his commitment to his partner. As if that is not enough, you link to a piece by Dan Riehl, which makes fun of Rep. Frank’s speech impediment. How loathsome.

BTW, I was wrong about the gay left and Pres. Bush. As far as I know, there were no floats mocking his condition or marchers holding up lewd signs about his colon. At least on that day, they were better than I gave them credit for. And you, Dan Blatt, are worse.

Gerald, please get a sense of humor; they are wonderful things!

    Thanks!

(Barney is not just a lefty; he’s a mean-spirited man who routinely engages in name-calling. And here I’m just mocking the unhappy career politician.)

Good riddance from Congress and good luck on your marriage Mr. Frank.

What, precisely, is Barney Frank’s claim to fame? Certainly he is no role model. I understand he is a professional politician who has reached the point where he can not be reelected and that he is gay and that he has decided to marry this current lover and perhaps is thinking about monogamy, but I don’t know that for certain.

So, what is so serious about this mean-spirited clown that anyone is obliged to wish him well? I do not wish him well, because I don’t think his idea of “well” and my idea of “well” are sympathetic, let alone the same.

However, I do not wish him ill, either. He is a wart and serves no useful function. And I think the disproportionate help he gave in the Freddie/Fanny fiasco that wrecked this economy and boomeranged around the world is criminal. So, good-bye, Barney and don’t let the door of House or the chapel hit your fat butt on your way out. Just go.

Nice bit of humor, Daniel and yes I get that it has to do with the personality and not so much to do with gay marriage. I can think of a number of hetero’s that could fit in the same scene.

i’ll just wish the happy couple my congratulations and appreciate that there are now places in our country where this couple can make a legal commitment to each other that is celebrated by their family and friends.

Is that the one that ran a prostitution ring or the one from Fannie Mae?

Nope. He’s a disgraceful POS who fought long and hard so that Clinton’s CRA bullshit would indeed hit the fan and screw the American people royally. He’s a sorry sack of crap that only deserves to be laughed at and mocked derisively as he rides off into the sunset completing his mission of fucking us over.

Damn him and his tea room troll.

I suppose they didn’t know. That’s the only reason. After all it is enough to see that Trig Palin is fair game.

Mine, too. People don’t realize that ”tone of voice” does NOT translate to the written word, hence, emoticons.

I guess this web site has gotten too subtle for me.

Just saw the ABC story. “Longtime” partner of 5 years. He’s 72 and partner is 42. Let’s see, that translates back to 52-22, or 42-12. Yeah, that will make a good impression on everyone. Like Heliotrope I don’t wish him ill, but that is about all. He has not helped our lives in any way. It has always been about Barney.

isn’t this the equality everybody brags about? now fat, old, ugly and unpleasant gays with money can marry younger, attractive men looking for a comfortable lifestyle…

For the sake of equality I just wished this would be pointed out by media outlets exactly like they do when it happens with a fat, old millionaire marrying a 30something girl.

    Rusty, you illustrate Susan’s point.

Perhaps Barney and his partner have found true love and happiness. Good on them. Perhaps Rush and his wife have found true love and happiness. Good on them too.

But Susan’s point is excellent. The media went after fat, rich Rush for reeling in a trophy wife and you are right here, on command, with the same take.

Why does Barney get a pass from both you and the media? Is there something about being gay or liberal that makes a difference? Please identify such if gay or liberal changed the rules of snark.

I think once you hit a certain age the year difference doesn’t matter as much. 42 to 12 makes me cringe shoot 42 to 18 makes me cringe, but not so much the 72 to 42 although I wonder what in the world a 42 year old sees in a fat, bitter 72 year old. I figure once parties involved are out of their 20’s its a whatever floats your boat.

Ah yes, the same “boyfriend” that got caught heckling his meal ticket’s opponent at an event.

Building on heliotrope’s point and as in the cited post, can you imagine the “incivility” wailing that would be coming from the Obama Party if a Republican’s spouse had done the same?

Therein the lesson, kids. Not only are Obama supporters hypocrites, they’re homophobes who think gays are incapable of even basic civil behavior.

I suppose the limit line can be drawn when the younger can call the older ‘dad’ (or ‘mum’ for cougar relationships), so I’d say 16-18 age difference is the limit And I apply no discrimination when it happens to madonna and her boy, Calvin Kline and his 20 year old boy, or some renoun lesbian (sorry I dont have an example at handy)
