Is that one or two degrees of Catwoman?

July 27, 2012 by B. Daniel Blatt

Anne Hathaway plays Catwoman in the latest Batman movie, The Dark Knight Rises where Matthew Modine returns to the screen as Foley.  Twenty-four years ago, Modine was in Married to the Mob where he fell for Michelle Pfeiffer who played Catwoman in Batman Returns.

Meanwhile, in the contest for cattiest Catwoman, it’s a real cat fight between Eartha Kitt and Julie Newmar, with Kitt coming out first:

Perhaps, a runoff is in order between her and Hathaway?  Now, Kitt is comfortably cattier, but Hathaway is darker and more duplicitous, very much a female Han Solo with a bit more of an edge.

To be honest, I’m not sure if Hathaway should even be included. She didn’t seem much of a Catwoman, seemed more of (spoiler alert!!!!!) simply a thief who liked to wear leather and a mask. There was nothing special. I know many loved her in the movie, but, to me, it appeared as if she was just thrown in as an extra character to provide some eye candy and a few plot twists.

Anne played a character who was selfish who learned to see the bigger picture. It was written rather bluntly, but Anne played it the way that it was asked of her

You can’t compare Julie, eartha, and Michelle. They all owned the role in their own right. My pref is for michelle, but that’s because I adore her, grew up in the 80s, etc.

But those who voted for Halle. Wtf. J/k. Well, sort of.

I thought Anne was fine, but hers was a much different interpretation of the role than that from the 1960s TV show.

Well Batman is different than the 60’s. The comics were in high camp as well. Remember the episode with the Joker’s Utility Belt? That was a comic as well (it’s reprinted in The Greatest Joker Stories Ever Told). The 60’s were an aberration in Batman’s history. Heck, the Batman used guns in his first few incarnations.

When my family went to see Batman in the 80’s my parents were horrified at how dark it was. I told them, “This is the way the comic books are written now. The movie just reflects them.” A Death in the Family, A Lonely Place for Dying, The Killing Joke, all were reflected of the period. Has anyone seen “Under the Red Hood”? That beating to death of Robin the Joker does? That’s pretty much how it was done in Death in the Family.

The (questionably written) Catwoman series of the New 52 also reflects an amoral Catwoman is my understanding.

I’d like to see a Catwoman series written in the style of shows like Leverage. Heck, I’d like to see a Black Cat series written that way. (Bonus if it is the Black Cat from the Spiderman Animated Series in the 90’s, but the Marvel U has overplayed the Super Soldier thing)

Anne Hathaway for me. What? I’m 20. She’s the Catwoman of my generation.
    “Don’t be shy. . . ” 😉

I caught the ending of Halle Berry’s Catwoman. Still have nightmares from its awfulness. The dialogue, the delivery, the acting, the directing. . . Dear God in Heaven!

“The only real Catwoman is Eartha Kitt, Julie Newmar or Lee Meriwether”. – Adam West, guest starring on the Simpsons.
