Obama feeling heat on burgeoning debt under his watch?

August 13, 2012 by B. Daniel Blatt

Do find it interesting that I frequently find Obama campaign ads on right-of-center blogs. Last night and this morning, caught this ad on Commentary:

Seems I’ve seen it on other conservative and libertarian web-sites. Have you? And the $4 trillion by which he pledges to reduce the debt is from what baseline?  His own estimates for future spending released at the outset of his term?  Or from current spending levels?

Wonder if he fears ads like this one that I caught today while traveling in Nevada:

Under President Obama’s watch, before he’s even completed that one-term proposition, the federal debt has increased by a greater amount that it increased in George W. Bush’s two terms. And at the end of that era, Mr. Obama said we’d been “living beyond our means.”

UPDATE:  What the Obama campaign doesn’t mention in its ad is that despite Obama’a 2009 pledge to reduce the deficit by half at the end of his first term, the deficits his budget office forecasts for the end of his second term (should he win reelection) would be higher than the “astounding” figure Bob Schieffer cited in the third presidential debate in 2008, a figure so astounding that Obama, in his response to Schieffer, reiterated, as I put it in March, “his pledge of a ‘net spending cut’ and vowing, not ‘to go back to our profligate ways.'”

Is it just me or does the anti-Obama ad get all cluttered up a third of the way into it?

“Deficit reduced by 4 trillion” – What does that even mean?

“I wanted to increase spending by $50 trillion over the next 30 years, but because you fiscally responsible people are so bitchy, I will generously deign to increase it only by $46 trillion” – something like that?

In the Tester/Rehberg race I’ve noticed they’ve recently changed their tune to fiscal/spending issues. Despite a hugely horrible record in just 6 years of being in the Senate, Tester is hitting his opponent on voting to increase the debt ceiling. I wonder if it’ll work…

I’ve tangentially followed the race between Jon “In My Head I’m Really A Republican But I Vote Like A Democrat” Tester & Denny Rehberg. Problem is both have enough negatives to make either easily defeatable with different opponents. It appears Tester is using the debt ceiling vote to deflect from his vote (and subsequent support) for Obamacare.

From a random blog comment: “Tester is one of many Democrats who’d rather cut off a testicle than have Obama show up at a campaign rally.”
