Why even build a huge sand sculpture of Obama?

September 2, 2012 by B. Daniel Blatt

So quipped a friend of mine when reading on Drudge that “Rains wash[ed] away ‘Mount Obama’ in Charlotte…“:

A torrential downpour that struck Charlotte Saturday afternoon damaged the Mount Rushmore-style sand sculpture bust of President Obama — an ominous beginning to what many fear is a plagued convention.

Glenn Reynolds called it a METAPHOR ALERT.

But, the point remains, what purpose does it serve to have a giant sculpture of a president — or presidential candidate.  Was there a giant Romney statue in Tampa?  A giant George W. Bush statue in New York in 2004?  Of the Gipper in Dallas in 1984?

There ought to be a sand sculpture of His Majesty because he is a great man, better than the four on Mount Rushmore. Anyone who disagrees with that assessment must watch His Royal Highness’ speeches of the past month, which indicates his total rapture. Following him and supporting his policies is not only a must, but anyone that fails to do should be executed on the spot.

Well, it was only slightly damaged: http://www.washingtontimes.com/multimedia/image/obamasandjpg/

As such, it remains the world’s greatest commercial for vandalism.

I thought the sculpture looked rather creepy-Obama is probably heartbroken that his statue got ruined.

I mean really-statues even of the sand kind should be something that happens when you do something truly great.

The Barack Obama sand sculpture is creepy; it reminds me of something found in third world dictatorships of North Korea, Cuba, Venezuela, & the former Soviet Union.

As far as Dan’s question, one answer for why to build such a sculpture could be because little Barry got his feelings hurt so badly as a result of the Clint Eastwood routine.

I just viewed the sculpture via the Internet, and it is not a good likeness of the President. His smile is way too toothy compared to the actual man, and he seems unreal. You think the Dems could have gotten someone that would do justice to his countenance.

A serious answer? The stupid statue was built to show Obama as historic, and the kind of guy that would totally fit in on Mt Rushmore.

    No really.

The Obama camp has a history of doing this sort of thing.

Remember the “seal” Candidate Obama put on his podiums when he’d give speeches? No one had done this before. This was done to get the public used to the idea of him standing behind a podium with a seal. Because Obama standing just behind a podium didn’t look presidential enough.

Remember the “Office of the President-Elect?” No such thing had ever been done before, but Obama felt it was necessary to give a guy who just won an election a greater sense of legitimacy through November, December 2008 and the first part of Jan 2009 so that the public might accept him as presidential. I mean, HE ALREADY HAD HIS OWN OFFICE! Nevermind that the Bush team helped facilitate a smooth transition, making all efforts for a president-elect office window dressing.

Remember the Obama logo? What other president had a logo? It was so fantastic that even Pepsi tried to make their brand look like it. This was done to add legitimacy to the Obama brand, and so that people might look at Obama as refreshing as a tall glass of cola on a hot day of double-digit unemployment.

Which gets us to a sculpture. It’s a subtle way of saying, “yes, he doesn’t LOOK like a president who’s done anything worthy of naming a tollbooth after, but can’t you totally SEE him on Mt Rushmore? Nevermind that that sculpture’s cheesy smile looks more like “thumb’s-up Jesus” than George Washington’s stoic countenance. He’s on a sculpture, dammit, and you are conditioned to believe it.

And who’s going to vote against a guy who belongs next to Lincoln on a mountain in SD?

Only place Obama should be remembered are those 2008 commemorative plates now being sold on eBay for less than the cost of a gallon of gas.

Fitting that it would be built out of sand…probably one of the least durable building materials ever, unless mixed with OTHER materials. Wind blows it away, water washes it away and its impossible to keep it in a steep pile, it caves always.

Do the Dems understand the sybolism? Eh, probably not, they dressed up like cows and had a manure spreader parade in Madison WI.
