Why I just can’t see Obama winning. . .

October 2, 2012 by B. Daniel Blatt

Yes, I know that even if the polls have shown a slight drift to Romney these past few days, they still show Obama ahead.

That said, given the problems this nation faces, with the “fiscal cliff” looming, he just doesn’t seem engaged in the process of governing.   And that is why this video is — or at least should be — one of the handful of defining ads of this campaign.  It shows a president who would rather campaign than provide for the common defense (flying to Vegas on the day after the attacks on our embassies and consulates), would rather participate in a day-time talk show than meet with world leaders (heading to a taping of the View rather than take the time to talk to world leaders in New York for the opening of the latest session of the United Nations).

He seems more disposed to doing TV talk shows than to negotiating with federal legislators.

As we’ve said before, he just doesn’t seem interested in doing a job.

Call it the “Shy Tory Effect,” or the ”Bradley Effect,” or give it a new name just for Obama, but I think we are seeing some dishonest responses when folks are polled.
After all who likes to be looked upon as a ”racist” for voting against Obama?

While I wish you were right, I think the average voter can only see as far as their “free” cell phone (which was free after paying taxes for it, plus a bureaucracy to order/supply it).

Here’s a story I read years ago, by a French reporter who was working in Nigeria (Lagos) in the booming early 90s, when the country was awash in oil money.

He’d go every night to the top-of-the-line hotel to the bar, so he could see/hear what kinds of movers & shakers were in town. Mostly sales VPs from European countries, there to sell Nigeria building bridges, roads, factories, etc. etc. – all billion-dollar contracts. So these guys are at the top of their game, in their 40s or 50s, world travelers. Almost all married with kids. And every night he saw these guys go out with the prostitutes. Finally, he said he couldn’t take it any more and went over to a group of them and said: “Look, you *know* that 70% of the population in Lagos has AIDS, and the hookers are probably 110%, with multiple varieties. And if you go out with prostitutes every night, you’re going to get it, and then you’ll go home and give it to your wife, and you’ll both die long, slow horrible deaths and make orphans of your kids”. And he said that they all looked at him and basically said “Yeah, so, what’s your point?”. And at that point he said he realized, as a reporter, that if people this highly educated and powerful couldn’t see past the end of their penis, and had no problem dying in 5 or 10 years if they could have sex tonight, then Western society was doomed – nobody was going to do the long-term sacrifice for the community that it takes to hold together a modern society.

And that story has stuck with me to this day.

And that’s why I think Obama’s going to win – people WANT to be told what to do. They don’t WANT choices, because choices means they might make the wrong choice – far better to have someone else make the choice for them (and complain about it). And people don’t want to plan for their future, or think about their future. As Henry Ford said – 95% of the people would rather die than think.

I sure hope you’re right, but I’m very fearful that you’re wrong.

There may be a very good reason why in recorded human history, a real Republic only showed up once. They’re not viable.

I am hoping (can’t say I strongly believe it yet), I am hoping that the Romney Presidency will be known as the one launched by a thousand Chiks. Looking at the huge turnout at ChikFilAs leads me to believe that a lot of people are out there who have had it with the PC crushing of dissent, the relentless intrusions on our liberties, and, as a bonus, the complete suborning of the Media as Obama’s codpiece carriers. I don’t care if gays get married. I do care if a Mayor threatens a business for the legal, protected speech of it’s owner. Apparently, I care a lot more than the Constitutional Scholar In Chief, as he could never find the time to mention that whole awkward First Amendment thing. I am hoping enough Americans who are sick of all of that will show up give The Empty Suit Known As Obama his walking papers.

I agree with Ken. I’m not sure Obama will lose. I just don’t know what the outcome of this election. Americans are increasingly unable to think critically. Just as Ken explained with the Nigerian professionals sleeping around carelessly—it’s a kind of short-ranged mentality than doesn’t have a concept of future, tomorrow or next month. This also has to do with a lack of principles in individuals lives. This is especially noticeable in the West more and more. This is what may lead to another Dark Ages.
If anyone knows about history, that period of Western history was horrendous. It was dumbing down on a massive scale. Even the concept of time and building roads was lost. I just don’t what the outcome of this election will be.

    Ken:

While there is of course a chance you are right, that story is not relevant. Of course, those VPs acted liked that — those sorts people like to engage in risky behavior to feed their egos and prove how “special” they are. That makes them willfully stupid, but it is not evidence they are representative.

And, yes: some people do WANT to be told what to do. You left out the critical qualifier.

The real question is How many and what are YOU personally going to do about it?

I sure hope Dan is right… I can’t rationalize for myself how BHO could win – the incompetence and corruption are just too much.

But the steady stream of crises – A-stan, embassy assaults (far more than just Libya and Egypt), the Fast & Furious expose on Univision (needs to air with English audio), the economy, the WARN Act chicanery, the money gift to Ohio this week, too many other things to even remember… all three-plus years of this just don’t seem to register.

F&F is a scandal that makes Watergate and Monica seem so trivial. Actual human beings – a lot of them – died as a result of this and no one appears to care.

Nevertheless, I tend to think like Nan G – that Obama support isn’t all that genuine and that Romney support is under-reported.

As Pat Caddell said in a speech the other day, the MSM has become dangerous.

The WSJ says that it’s because Romney won’t call the Obama bullshit for what it is nor will he explain his actual tax plans.

But then today, they pointed to an AEI study which says that Obama will raise taxes on the middle-class by $4,000. If you mix that with Joe Bigot’s gaffe today in an ad, you’ve got some gold there.

And on that note, people willing to take control of their own lives are a minority here, let alone in the world. This IS the last stand, to paraphrase Reagan.

The mass psychosis that gripped the electorate 4 years ago is so over. People didn’t really vote for Obama but whatever fantasy they projected onto him. When you’re everything to everyone, you’re nothing to anyone. In that respect Nan G. is right, support for him doesn’t run deep. Voters will blame him for their disillusionment, not themselves for electing him. The higher the pedestal, the longer and harder the fall. The greater the expectations, the higher the disillusionment when paradise on earth conspicuously fails to arrive. He’s toast.
