Joe Biden’s boorish behavior rallies the left

It was a weird debate,” began Jim Geraghty reflecting on last night’s Ryan-Biden match-up, “in that one candidate’s personality so totally dominated the proceedings, that your reaction to the debate will be decided almost entirely by what you think of Joe Biden when unplugged.”  Read the whole thing.

And while Joe Biden may have appeared (particularly to independent women and witty conservatives) to have lost his marbles, liberals were ecstatic, causing Hugh Hewitt to quip (as I noted previously), “The left is cheering Joe Biden’s meltdown, which is itself an indication of how far it has lost its bearings.”  He builds on this point by excerpting The Wall Street Journal’s debate summary:

But this 90 minutes wasn’t about an exchange of ideas or a debate over policies. It was a Democratic show of contempt for the opposition, an attempt to claim by repetitive assertion that Messrs. Ryan and Romney are radicals who want to destroy “the middle class.” Mr. Ryan’s cool under assault was a visual rebuttal of that claim, and we certainly know who looked more presidential.

Echoing the Journal, Jonathan S. Tobin believes Democrats were “delighted” with “Vice President Joe Biden’s obnoxious display” in large part because “the liberal base of the president’s party is so filled with anger and contempt for Republicans that they can’t abide even a show of civility from their champions.”  (Read the whole thing.)

This manic contempt was Biden’s apparently successful strategy to “throw the Obama base a lifeline” (via Sarah Hoyt at Instapundit).  What does it say about a political party that it rallies on the boorish behavior of an angry old man?

And this “from the administration that promised to bring back civility to American politics” (via Instapundit).

UPDATE:  Jennifer Rubin has a similar perspective:  “That lefty bloggers and pundits ate up Biden’s antics is a telling commentary on how vitriolic the left in general has become.

UP-UPDATE:  Neoneocon asks, “what does it say about the Democratic base if this is the sort of thing that gets its members’ juices flowing?

  1. Have you ever noticed, when Republicans are passionate about something the MFM calls them “angry,” but when Democrats are passionate about something, the MFM calls them “feisty?”

Anyway, you’re absolutely right about why Biden’s performance works for the (deranged) leftist base. He channeled their contempt for ideas, debate, and honest differences of opinion and became an avatar for their love of condescension, self-righteousness and hatred for everyone who doesn’t agree with them.

  2. Biden acted like a Community Agitator/Organizer.

Ryan acted like a Vice President.

Team Obama had to play to their base to make up for BHO. That’s what the Big Bird distraction was about and why they served Joe with extra Crazy Sauce.

  3. Rallying the base this late in the campaign is not a good sign.

    For Democrats.

  5. “Joe Biden’s boorish behavior rallies the left”

That says it all, or at least enough.

  6. Saw this on FB: ” I don’t think Biden really cared about truth last night, this was for the base, get the wind up monkeys banging their cymbals after Obama bummed their groove.”

  7. I didn’t (and will not waste time doing so) watch but just followed along on Twitter when I could (pesky work getting in the way). But all Biden seems to have done, and why the left thinks he “won”, is use the standard leftist tactic of “debate” by interrupting before your opponent can finish and avoiding anything resembling a solid point on your own part. The right’s version is Bill O’really … er … O’reilly and although he does get to a point he is so annoying I can’t watch. So the reason Joe was applauded by the base is simple enough…Talked to any of them lately? He acted like a slightly milder version (no F-bombs) and as Biden actually is a very nice person in person, his “attacks” come across and goofy as he also is in real life (People I know who have met him all say the same basic thing… “Really nice guy…but a complete effing moron”).

  8. Apparently, according to the talking heads and reading reviews this morning, Vice President Joe Biden’s performance last night energized the base of the Democrat Party.

So I guess we can conclude that the base of the Democrat Party is a bunch of obnoxious, rude blow hearts.

What else can one conclude when these Democrats find it so darn humorous anytime a serious matter is raised such as the slaughter of 4 Americans in Libya or how millions are unemployed or underemployed or how ObamaCare is going give a faceless panel of 15 bureaucrats in Washington control over the decisions on your parents or grandparents health care during the most vulnerable time of their lives.

    I see.

Well then, if Biden’s performance last night energized you then that is sad, really sad and what last night told Americans is that Democrats really have fallen and fallen a very long and pathetic way.

  9. This past week saw Dems pissing and sh*tting on R&R signs, before Biden got on stage. There we saw a sitting VP go through the signs I usually associate with primates: screeching, arm flinging, grimacing, feces-flinging.

This is what the left has descended to. This is Occupy in a suit on a stage.

  10. What is really great about last night is that it was a clear prelude to the way obama’s handlers will want him to act and respond in his next 2 debates.. I don’t think he can pull it off, but it will be fun to watch.

As usual, the democrats have overplayed their hand. Any one remember the Wellstone memorial. Love to see team obama/biden turn off more voters!!!

  11. Obama set the bar for Biden,

Biden now set the bar, for next Tuesday,

Both Obama and Romney will have to be cautious,

Neither can afford to come across boorish, pushy, or rude

Yet, will have to appear self-confident and calm under pressure. . .

This theatre is drawing in a lot of folk from left, center and the right.

  12. Biden was “unplugged?” Seemed more like he was unhinged.

But even more outrageous than his cackling like a deranged hyena was the fact that he sat there and told bald-faced lies — like saying he had opposed the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, when in fact, the record clearly proves that he voted for both wars when he was in the Senate.

Biden is a fraud and a liar, and his smirking and laughing like some kind of lunatic who was off his meds didn’t make that sad fact any more palatable.

Great quote and very applicable to Biden who did act like a spoiled brat-he all but stomped his feet when he didn’t get his way-and he couldn’t even be respectful of the moderator who was clearly on his side-much like a spoiled brat can’t even show respect for mom.

Biden needed to be spanked and sent to bed, but instead Raddatz gave him candy.

  15. The incomparable Iowahawk has had some great tweets today about last night’s debate. I really like this one: “Dems haven’t been this fired up since the Howard Dean scream or the Paul Wellstone LSD funeral party.” Likewise, this is another great one: “Today’s entertainment: watching it slowly, slowly dawning on lefties that last night was another debate disaster.”

On a slightly different topic, but just as entertaining, he tweeted: “If Obama doesn’t fire Hillary, he’ll look like a foreign policy disaster. If he does, he’ll look like a foreign policy disaster.” And that one is fun to contemplate, because if he were to fire Hillary, Bill might go into full loose-cannon mode.
