Seems there are lots of Democrats for Romney

One thing which makes me suspicious of polls showing a tight race is the superabundance of reports we read of one-time Obama backers switching to Mitt Romney.  We have reported the number of newspapers which had backed Obama in 2008, but have, this time, switched to Romney.  Earlier today, John Fund reported that over 30 had switched.

And bear in mind that human beings make those endorsements, many of them caught up in the hope-and-change fervor 0f 2008.

Kurt shares this report about another life-long Democrat casting her first vote for a Republican:

Bryna Franklin of Jerusalem is a lifelong Democrat and a former chair of Democrats Abroad Israel. She voted for a Republican for president for the first time in her 80 years when she voted this year for Mitt Romney.

Bryna, who served for years as vice chair of the Franklin County Democratic Central Committee in Missouri and was a delegate to the 1992 Democratic National Convention, explained her decision as stemming from deep disappointment in President Obama on a range of issues.

Sustained high unemployment rates, declining property values, high foreclosure rates and the fact that a large part of every dollar our government spends is borrowed from China have led Bryna to conclude that the President’s record on the economy is dismal.

She believes that President Obama’s foreign policy actions have weakened America and undermined our relationships with our allies. In particular, she thinks that the President’s hostility to Israel does immense harm to both Israel and the U.S.

  1. But how do you feel about those odd cultural portents that point to an Obama win? Things like World Series winner, Redskins game, Scholastic Kids vote, In-Trade, Halloween mask sales, Cookie bake off winner, 7-11 coffee cup sales, etc.? Some of those things have been sadly accurate. sigh.
And then there’s Ohio. Not a portent, but a must win. And besides all the portents, do hope the Panthers win anyway!

  2. My daughter’s best friend’s parents are voting for a republican for the first time on Tuesday. They have both been life long democrats. they have been hit hard in this economy and have pretty much rejected Obama and his policies.

I also know several Obama 2008 voters who are voting Romney, but they weren’t particularly “Never voted for a republican” type voters.

I can say to date I don’t know a single person who voted for McCain in 2008 who is changing their vote to Obama (not saying there aren’t any just saying I haven’t met one).

  3. Just me: you haven’t met one BECAUSE THEY DON’T EXIST.

  4. Jack: You mention the World Series winner, but also recall that the last time the Giants won the World Series was in 2010, and that was not exactly a banner year for Democrats. 🙂

As far as your other points, there was a great xkcd comic the other day which detailed all the “portents” disproved by all of the previous elections. I don’t have the link handy at the moment, though, unfortunately.
