His resignation to the President cited an extramarital affair as the reason.

David Petraeus, the retired four-star general who led the U.S. military campaigns in Iraq and Afghanistan, has resigned as director of the CIA after admitting he had an extramarital affair.

The resignation shocked Washington’s intelligence and political communities, representing a sudden end to the public career of the best-known general of the post 9/11 wars.

I’m sure Petraeus’ scheduled appearance at the closed door Senate Intelligence Committee hearings on Benghazi next week are a complete coincidence to today’s announcement.

  1. Yep sounds just like some “Chicago way coincidence”. Just like some divorce records were unsealed to help O win elections. What was it Vallerie Jarrett said “We know who our enemies are and it is payback time.” I don’t know what the game is here, but there is something wrong with this picture. The two CIA men killed were murdered on his command I imagine he finds not helping them totally unacceptable.

  2. The timing is certainly curious, isn’t it? Reminds me of the old honey pot trap the KGB would run back in the day. He doesn’t strike me as being that stupid.

  3. Maybe he didn’t know that extra-marital affairs are against the rules. Maybe George Bush made him do it. So, now does he switch from General Betrayus to Ex-General Betrayher?

  4. The timing is certainly very questionable. One can hope that he will testify just like John Dean during Watergate

  5. Consider the Pentagon is currently court-martialing Brig. Gen. Jeffery Sinclair for adultery and abuse of authority I not sure Gen. Patreaus had much choice. Retired Gneral-rank officers are still in-commission and held to a higher-standard than civilians in their personal conduct…even in retirement. And as Head of the CIA, adultery creates a vulnerability that potentially-threatens his effectiveness.

That may all be so, but it is not as if adultery is relative to anything. Bill Clinton didn’t consider his playing around with Monica Lewinsky’s crotch and breasts to be sex. Typical of moral relativism, there is always a discussion among those who act without moral restraint about the comparative seriousness of different types and circumstances of infidelity.

An old joke illustrates the point. The President of the Hebrew Congregation at the temple learns that his wife has committed adultery and knows of three separate incidents. He confronts her and she admits that when he was near bankruptcy that she had helped solve the problem with the president of the bank and that when he was hopeful of being awarded a major product distributorship that she helped make the choice fall his way and the third instance was when he needed 146 votes to become President of the Temple.

It is all relative when relative is on the table.

  8. He is human. No need for him to resign. Get a divorce and move on with keeping the country safe

  9. While adultery may have been de-criminalized under civil law, it’s still punishable under the UCMJ….even if your single and having an affair with a married civilian. It’s not a trivial matter within the Military, and typically a career-killer even without a formal court-martial…especially for General-rank officers, even in retirement it can affect your pension and fringe-benefits. Retired three and four-star generals have even been reduced in rank post-retirement back to two-stars and the pensions reduced for numerous malfeasances.

  10. He is human

and IIRC, he lied to the nation about Benghazi. Yes, he needs to resign. But for a different reason, one far more difficult and dangerous for Obama. That is why people are ‘questioning the timing’.

  11. Well, it is a “coincidence”; but, at least he didn’t commit “suicide.”

  12. where he puts his genitals is between him and his wife/partners. unless this has something to do with benghazi, then this is nothing but salacious nonsense.
