Obama is setting this up so he can blame the GOP for going over the cliff, then play the hero by demanding the tax rates for the middle classes by restored.

V, pretty much my theory as well. He shows no genuine interest in these negotiations. Hasn’t met with Boehner (as far as I can tell) since his return from Pennsylvania. At least some folks in the media are catching on.
Obama’s response to Republican offer is pure demagoguery, still playing politics.
Will they fault the Democrat if he fails to make a counteroffer?

House Republicans are out with their response to the President’s opening bid on the fiscal cliff, and it’s not very impressive. Here are three big problems with the letter they sent to the White House:
2. The description of tax reform makes little sense. It’s feasible to raise $800 billion from base broadening over ten years, but not to raise $800 billion and finance a significant cut in tax rates [as Rep purport to do].
