Larry Elder’s message to the GOP:
Explain how Democratic policies hurt the poor

Kudos to the folks at Yahoo! for linking this article, Larry Elder to the GOP: ‘Stop talking to blacks like they are children’, on their home page, though, I daresay, their intention was not to promote the GOP but to critique Republican for patronizing African-Americans.

The Sage of South Central reminds Republicans that although “Democrats have convinced blacks otherwise [,] Racism is no longer a major issue in this country.”  Elder, my favorite talk show host when I listened regularly to the radio, has just published a new book, Dear Father, Dear Son: Two Lives… Eight Hours, contends “that the greatest threat to the black community is . . . the scourge of absentee fathers.

Republicans, he argues,

. . . need to explain how the welfare state has undermined the formation of traditional two-parent families. . . that the Democratic Party’s allegiance to teachers unions means urban parents are forced to send their children to schools the parents don’t like; that policies like minimum wage hikes destroy jobs for the unskilled; and admitting students under ‘race-based preferences’ means a higher drop-out rate for the ‘affirmative action student’; that raising taxes on the rich threatens the prosperity of all.

Would it that Mitt Romney, like his running mate Paul Ryan, were better able to articulate those arguments.  Had he fully understood them, he would never have said that he wasn’t concerned about the very poor for he would have known how the safety net often destroys families and undermines the social fabric.

And had Romney known, what Larry Elder knows, how the welfare state hurts those who depend upon it for their well-being, he would have been able to articulate how conservative reforms help not just the rich, but also the very poor — and everyone in between.

Kudos to Larry Elder for speaking out so forcefully.  We could use more voices like his in the GOP.  Just added his book to my amazon wish list.

  1. The Democrats should stop talking to blacks as if they’re still slaves from the Civil War era (Joe “they’re gonna put ya’ll back in chains” Biden).

Elder: “Racism is no longer a major issue in this country.”

It IS an issue when the Vice President can project the racism that thrives in the Democratic party onto Republicans.

  3. What a great and succinct way of saying this! I am a Mitt Romney supporter, but wondered why he didn’t go into detail.

Do you think there would have been a meltdown had he articulated these points?

  4. The fact is, most ethnic and sexual minorities who constantly vote Democrat couldn’t care less what the consequences to policies are. The DNC caters to their culture. Look at Detroit. It most certainly will take the brutal honesty of a Larry Elder, Paul Ryan, Thomas Sowell, etc. But it will also take ethnic and sexual minorities realizing and admitting something’s wrong with what’s going on around them, and doing what it takes to change it. The evidence is there; it’s a matter of facing it.

    Comment by Douglas — December 24, 2012 @ 12:53 pm - December 24, 2012

  5. The Democrats have created a great sales pitch for the takers in society, “Vote for us, we’ll take money away from people you hate and spend it on you.”

I don’t think you can ever persuade people who vote because of that mentality to change. Until the system collapses on them.

By the way, do you wanna know why conservatives hate welfare? This is why.

    Comment by V the K — December 24, 2012 @ 1:09 pm - December 24, 2012

  6. Douglas and V the K summed it up. Conservatism requires looking below the surface. If you’ve debated the average liberal, their quizzical looks prove that you can’t change what’s deeply entrenched. For blacks Obama is black. Republicans don’t like black people. For women, Republicans want to take away birth control. For gays, they’re going to put us in camps. Hispanics are to be repatriated. That’s it. No evidence required. That’s about as deep as Democrats have to go to get their vote. But to abolish welfare is foolhardy. The US has a permanent slave class. They must be subsidized. As someone with poor black relatives, understand this will never change. But today the middle class is on the dole. Democrats intend to collapse the system. The silent majority and self-absorbed baby boomers brought us to this point. They tolerated Gerald Ford, John McCain and Olympia Snowe. They allowed Democrats carte blanche. Yet today American families are going broke. Even the upper middle class. Indifference invited severe consequences.

    Comment by Exleftist — December 24, 2012 @ 3:45 pm - December 24, 2012

  7. Good luck on that one.

I don’t suppose he says anything about the War on Drugs and how mass incarceration of people for things like non-violent drug possession has made entire generations of black men “criminals” for life.

We have an entire system of defense and justice that needs wars and criminals, and this government and its agents on both sides of the aisle have no incentive to stop it.

  8. I keep hearing people say the left wants to collapse the system. I have yet to figure out how that would benefit them though. Wouldn’t collapse wake the American public up and cause them to reject the left and their disasterous policies, or do I give the public too much credit? I tend to think its more that they intend to lie, steal and cheat as much as possible until their grift inevitably causes collapse. Can anyone explain to me what collapsing the system would gain them?

    Comment by Ed — December 24, 2012 @ 6:28 pm - December 24, 2012

  9. I often hear people suggest the left wants to collapse the system but I have yet to figure out how that would benefit them. Wouldn’t collapse cause the public to wake up and reject the party and policies that brought ruin? Maybe I give the public too much credit, I just can’t see the payoff for intentional collapse (at least not for them). I tend to think the left just intends to lie, steal and cheat as long as they can get away with it and have no regard for the long term effects. Can someone explain to me what the payoff would be for them?

    Comment by Ed — December 24, 2012 @ 6:36 pm - December 24, 2012

  10. Ed – I think there are some of both on the left. There are a lot of leftists who are just too stupid to see how destructive their policies are. But there are others who see destruction as a path to power.

Consider the city of Detroit as a case study. In 1950, Detroit had the highest per capita income in the country. After the 1967 riots, Detroit began a forty year experiment of progressive politics. The results have been devastating, but the voters consistently return the same politicians to power, and the politicians are happy to rule over the ruins.

    Comment by V the K — December 24, 2012 @ 7:58 pm - December 24, 2012

  11. Do you honestly think Romney doesn’t realize how the welfare state and the entitlement mentality harm people? If anything, Romney didn’t spell it out clearly enough, plainly enough. And in his defense, Romney wasn’t communicating a lack of concern for the poor, he was expressing a strategy. It came across as cynical, sure, but it’s hard to argue against taking a cold look at electoral prospects among those unlikely to vote for you in numbers warranting outlays of limited funds. The only reason I disagree with Romney’s comments is that they provided ammunition — to the DNC, the Obama campaign, and to certain Republicans and their bloggers.

    Comment by Ignatius — December 24, 2012 @ 8:00 pm - December 24, 2012

  12. Ed,

Richard Cloward (1926–2001) and Frances Fox Piven (b. 1932) were a married couple and political activists who published an article in The Nation in 1966 entitled “The Weight of the Poor: A Strategy to End Poverty”.

    Cloward and Piven

“proposed to create a crisis in the current welfare system – by exploiting the gap between welfare law and practice – that would ultimately bring about its collapse and replace it with a system of guaranteed annual income. They hoped to accomplish this end by informing the poor of their rights to welfare assistance, encouraging them to apply for benefits and, in effect, overloading an already overburdened bureaucracy.” [Reisch, Michael; Janice Andrews (2001). The Road Not Taken. Brunner Routledge. pp. 144–146.]

The Progressives are socialists and the Cloward and Piven strategy for a guaranteed annual income has long been at the core of their belief system. It is a logical step to go from the minimum wage to the guaranteed annual income.

Collapsing a patchwork system of food stamps, rent subsidies, fuel assistance, medicaid, etc. with a guaranteed income makes common sense to them in terms of efficiency and effectiveness and social justice. All that is required is a system of income redistribution.

  13. Thanks for information V the K and Heliotrope. The guaranteed income fills in the missing piece for me. Sadly, I think far too many will indeed see that as logical.

  14. Professors and other seditionists plotted for decades to overthrow the capitalist system. We imported European communism early in the twentieth century. Bolshevik sympathizers committed terrorist acts against government officials. In the 1950s, McCarthy exposed Hollywood communists. History proved him correct. The revolution accelerated in the 1960s. Most hippies were worthless men. But the leadership hailed from affluent families. Socialism is chic in Yankee circles – control of the masses a given. In the past forty years, hippie elites overtook the Ivy League. Today their influence reaches community colleges and every public school.
After years of self-indoctrination, liberals believe collapse is manageable, i.e. Cloward and Piven. Large segments of the population would initially fall in line. Resisters would become enemies of the state. Bill Ayers and every other leftist believe in reeducation camps; John Kerry publicly praised their results. People are cattle to leftists. Culling the population a given.
But it won’t work over here. The nation would explode. Europe has a servile mentality – people are accustomed to kings and lords. Europeans suffer hate speech laws. Freedom of speech doesn’t exist. We Americans have big mouths and demand answers. From the beginning, liberty took root and cannot be extracted from the American psyche. The Left believes this can be controlled but are fools. Years of subversion will blow up in their faces. It’s sickening to think what they have done.

  19. I am late to this thread, but read a column by Thomas Sowell this morning. In the column was a paragraph that I thought fit this thread quite well as it aptly ads color to how obama has manipulated so many people as he implements the tenets of Cloward & Piven:

“After watching a documentary about the tragic story of Jonestown, I was struck by the utterly unthinking way that so many people put themselves completely at the mercy of a glib and warped man, who led them to degradation and destruction. And I could not help thinking of the parallel with the way we put a glib and warped man in the White House.”

Here is a link to the full column.

  20. To all the comments I say, AMEN! But I do have a question; well, more like a comment. The Left can succeed only so long as there’s a large enough segment of the population that believes in its agenda. The Left has been manufacturing such a segment through the public schools. Conservatives have long known and vehemently condemned this. Yet, year after year, decade after decade, where do conservatives send their children to be educated? Public schools! What kind of sense does that make? That’s not a rhetorical question. I really want to know and want to hear what others think about this contradiction. Why would a group of people purposely give their children to an institution that they KNOW is hostile to their values and intends to eradicate said values from their children? Why do conservatives do this? Why?

    Comment by Seane-Anna — December 25, 2012 @ 12:26 pm - December 25, 2012

  21. @Seanne-Anna – That’s a fair and reasonable question. Let me try to address it even if imperfectly.

    1) I am a product of public schools. Well except for 3 years in the UK. And 9 years at an Ivy League university. And somehow am still a conservative aka classic liberal.

    2) On my income alone it would be difficult to homeschool. We could never afford a house.

    3) Now we *did* send children to very inexpensive private school for several years. When we first arrived in this state/city the public education system was pretty rough. We were making ends meet – but not able to save anything for the future. Got tired of constantly having to tell our kids we couldn’t afford things their friends/classmates could. Most people at that school are rich/connected.

    4) My wife became a public school teacher right about the time we pulled our kids out of that school and put them into a magnet middle school. Are we suddenly rich? No but I have been able to sock away 10% of my salary *and* we occasionally go on vacation for a change.

    5) When you or your spouse is a public school teacher it gives one a different perspective on these things. I do not necessarily disagree that public schools are largely intended to turn us all into good little serfs of the state – although this agenda is set by people who are pretty far up river because I know plenty of teachers who are not progressives/statists. *That* does concern me – these people who set the agenda that filters its way through teacher training and education policy.

    6) This may not entirely address your fine concern/question. Part of it – see #1 – is a stubborn faith in the value of a good public education. I am reluctant to abandon completely the system to the locusts.

  24. Rick @ 21, thanks for your answer; it confirmed some of my thoughts on the subject, especially the part about expenses, how you and your wife got tired of telling your kids “no”, and your continued “stubborn faith in the value of a good public education”. I think those are pretty much the main reasons why most conservatives continue to send their kids to an anti-conservative institution. Bottom line, they don’t consider their values important enough to sacrifice for them. I mean, really. What’s so sacred about public education? Nothing! It’s just easier, faster, and less expensive to send little Johnny to public school and hope against hope he’ll emerge unscathed. Yet we wonder why more young Americans say they prefer socialism to capitalism. That is our failure, and it’s profoundly sad.

  29. Not all public schools are crap; but they can vary widely between areas and even within the same small districts. Some schools have very dedicated and hard-working teachers, but their schools get little support from the school district in relation to some of the other schools.

Some of the “good schools” can be regular ones, or magnet, or charter schools. Fortunately, my state has eliminated residency requirements for schools and school districts, so that anyone can attend any school in any district. This at least helps keep the education establishment a little more honest, since schools get funding based on enrollment.

I see less of a problem with the ideological bent (real or perceived) of the public school system in my state than with the all-consuming athletic industrial complex. The high school I graduated from now has permanent early dismissal on Fridays at 1 PM (thus inconveniencing parents who rely on the bus system—which runs at regular times for the rest of the students in the other schools) because too many students are gone for sports tournaments. My hometown newspaper is mostly a sports journal with a few public events reporting thrown in as ‘news’. I recently asked a distant relative who is a longtime school board member what the literacy rate was for the district. She didn’t know. Yet the dropout rate in the same district and a large one in a neighboring county is more well-known and is nothing to brag about.

When the focus of an educational system really isn’t education, is it any wonder Japan, South Korea, and China have higher education success rates than the USA?

  31. Socialists, and communists have triennial meetings, with one goal on their agenda; abolishing capitalism. See how many Democrats, senators and congressmmen are members of Socialist International. The Democrat Party is the hostage of Americans for Democratic Action. In the 1950´s Democrtic candidates shunned their endorsements. Now they jump through their asses for their endosement. Obama has a 95% rating. Oddly enough the Democrat with the lowest rating, around 55%, is Senator Diane Finestein.

As for collapsing the system, the Cloward Priven Strategy is this; Create more riots and feel your anger and let your hatred flow. Chaos and government impotence to control riots is the fuel to collapse the system and bring in Marxists government solutions.

Rick 67 and Seanne-Anna, from time to time I have commented that Republicans who want to enter into politics as a career should start at the bottom, namely school boards, junior college boards, then when conservatives have the majority, then we can toss the revisionists curriculum in the garbage and restore history as it was originally recorded. This might seem like the minor leagues but this is how Democrats honed their skills for higher office. Conservatives should do likewise. Obama is the exception to the rule. One thing for certain; he has proven that being a community organizer is not sufficient training for higher office.

  34. If you want to know the future, then read Charles Dickens, A Tale of Two Cities.

The old elite were totally decrepit and in that story there are some interesting elements. It all comes together towards the end of the story!!

The old French elite treated the people as if they were dogs. It was ok to barge through a crowd in a carriage, and to kill a child at the same time. Even worse, it was ok to them to take the wife of another man and rape her to the point of death.

The actions of the elite via those statements such as “let them eat grass” were the statements that became their undoing. The rage that was seething within built up to the day of the storming of the Bastille. It went beyond that point to end up with the deaths of many innocent people for simply being a member of an aristocratic family.

History has a habit of repeating itself. Right now there is a new elite class. I have a certain crass name for them, and refer to them as foul odour sniffers. This elite are in fact the Marxists. At the moment they have control in the USA, and sadly in Australia as well.

The USA failed to get rid of its Marxist. Now Australians are biding their time for the coming 2013 elections. Promises are being made to that class of people who are too lazy to check out all the facts. All they want is free and easy money.

This type of welfare system is going to collapse one day. We cannot predict when the collapse will come, but there will be a Great Depression far worse than the 1930s when it happens because the elite will have successfully dismantled our successful industries leaving a path of destruction.

When this happens the elite will be punished.

History has shown us thousands of people like him. The only reason to reply is to show how much of a coward he is, and that he cannot reply to facts and intellectual discourse. It’s not to educate him. We’ve shown time and time again that you can lead a Levi to facts, but you can’t make him think.
