This needs to be re-emphasized every time some leftist twit starts raving about those disembodied guns that float around killing children.

You do not have a right to defend yourself in NY. Recently, a guy was released from jail after over a month in jail for beating off two attqckers who jumped the counter at the McDonalds where he worked. The local news showed the video and it was obvious he was being attacked, yet they portrayed him as the bad guy. NY is a may issue state, too, so you have to prove you need the gun (this was before Herr Cuomo started his 7 bullet restriction) so you could spend thousands on getting the permit and still be denied after the year or so (you also have to renew your permit every year)

Where I live in the country, Police response time is 6-25 minutes…assuming they’re available RIGHT NOW!
It’s not their fault, it’s just they are spread-out across 20 sq-miles with non-linear rural roads. It’s 8-mins driving directly from the Police office to here, maybe 12-15 min. for the ambulance.
In case of a fire, they have to use my swimming pool for water. If the neighbors’ place is on fire, they’ll relay tankers and use my pool’s water…or pump from the creek at the bridge 3/4-mile away. (…Now that I think of it, I think my pool and my brother’s ex-brother-in-law’s pool down the road are the only non-stream open-water sources within a mile or two ’til you get to the nearby village.)

Oh, and a firearms background check takes 6-8 weeks after your file out the four-pages of forms and pay the $18-fee. And that’s only good for long-guns.

If I were in one of those states, I would have my firearms and ammunition in reach without a care in the world for “the law.”
Let us examine the “ethics” of this, shall we? Do the crooks have guns? Do they have permits to own and to carry? What is the incidence of hoodlums being locked up for breaking firearms laws?
We are all being hoodwinked* about the whole gun loophole eyewash while the crooks arm up, illegal aliens pour in and the NYC mayor cracks down on sodas and styrofoam cups.
(*)Hoodwinked: “blindfolded.” The common man is being denied the basic right to protect his life, liberty and property by the state which can not guarantee the protection of his life, liberty and property from others who are armed, even if it is in violation of the law.
To require morality on the part of the moral population in the face of immorality or amorality on the part of the criminal class is to entice the moral population to ignore the law, as the law benefits the criminal.
So, the average homeowner arms up and ignores the permit process so that he does not get fingered by a rogue newspaper and embroiled in a long state bureaucratic process. The odds are that he will never use the weapon for protection. On the other hand, if he does save his life and ends up with a firearms charge by the state, is he worse off for it?
These are simple calculations which any sentient person can make.
