This morning’s Obama scandal news

It’s official: A plurality of Democrat voters are hypocrites, as they support the Obama DOJ spying on the Associated Press “after Democrats spent the entirety of Bush’s second term loudly despairing over civil liberties and freedom of the press being trod upon” in Allahpundit’s words.

But don’t worry, at least the IRS stands up for the Constitution: Lois Lerner has reportedly invoked the Fifth Amendment in her testimony before Congress, so as not to incriminate herself. Yup. Nothing illegal went on at the IRS, folks. Move along.

Seriously, the IRS scandal wasn’t just some rogue agents in Cincinnati: from the outset, they were guided by IRS lawyers in Washington. To his credit, Sen. Max Baucus (D) is asking why no heads have rolled yet over this scandal.

Kathryn Ruemmler, the top White House lawyer, may take a fall to give more plausibility to Obama’s “Nobody around here tells me anything!” defense. She may also take a fall over Benghazi.

UPDATE: The IRS had internal reports about their targeting of conservative groups, months before the election. And did not tell Congress, as they were obligated to!

It’s starting to look like the Obama crew won the 2012 election by hiding crucial information (sometimes known as lying). Had Americans known the truth about the IRS and about Benghazi, 2% (which is all it would have taken) could well have gone the other way.

  1. And a majority of Democrats are okay with fascism as long as they get to wear the jackboots.

  2. And this agency is now implementing ObamaCare and the critical subsidies for—and penalities to—the Entrepreneurial-class and the self-employed? …Under the aegis of the same IRS management group?

    Outrageous.

Time to pull the plug on ObamaCare—or at least delay the Individual Mandate and it’s odious penalties ’til public confidence is restored.

  3. Let the disaster of Obamacare roll out during next years election cycle. Let the LIVs feel the PAIN we have been warning them about and that includes Union membership who campaigned for this cr@pfest. Unions are shocked to find they were not shielded from the consequences of Obamacare while Congress was. Democrats entirely own this train wreck and I for one am willing to share the pain as long as Dems pay the price.

  4. Obamacare agent: Please tell me what is ailing you.

Obamacare patient: I’m suffering from chest pains and my headache that won’t go away.

Obamacare agent: Oh, our records show you attended a reading of the Constitution and once expressed disgust at Goverment spending in a letter to the editor.

Obamacare patient: So? What about my health problems.

Obamacare agent: Care is denied to domestic terrorists. You know, you aren’t looking very well. Are your affairs in order?

  5. Texann, have no fear. Anything openly bad about the implementation of Obamacare will ultimately be delayed until after the election cycle. In fact, if they can pull it off, it will be delayed indefinitely until the Republicans manage to win an election, at which point it’ll be permitted to come crashing down and be their fault.

  6. There were several reports of the Tea Party and others being targeted but the media called them paranoid and never investigated themselves. The media didn’t take any scandal seriously until the AP got their phone records taken. Suddenly they started to look into things and are outraged. Obama still won’t be blamed as the lower levels have been made as the scapegoats since they never told him anything about the issues.

  7. eeyore – True. All it would take to make all these scandals go away is for Obama to 1) melodramatically say “I didn’t know” in a speech, 2) fire some underlings (designated scapegoats), and 3) quietly give the media some credible assurances that THEY won’t be spied on again.

If Obama did those things, he would still be guilty as sin (because of course he knows!), but the media would resume their preferred role of covering *for* him (as opposed to, you know, covering him) and otherwise ensuring that his many, many, many scandals never get onto the average voter’s radar.

  8. I’m fairly certain that Obama really didn’t (and doesn’t) know what’s going on. I just don’t think he’s that smart. My impression is that he’s an ’empty suit’ having his ego fed and manipulated by others to carry out their agenda.

As Peggy Noonan and others have pointed out, Obama has spent the last six years and more calling out Conservative groups and individuals by name. How easy (and typical of human behavior) would it be for bureaucrats to take that cue from their boss and take it upon themselves to persecute perceived political enemies? There would be a natural tendency to shield the boss from knowledge in an effort to give him plausible deniability. Remember that most, if not all, Obama’s power is built on a cult of personality.

  10. Lois Lerner was placed on paid administrative leave today. Wow. Who could have seen that coming?

The perpetrators will be subject to the worst imaginable penalty for a Federal bureaucrat: Paid administrative leave.

  13. mikey is hanging in there, slinging the DNC/Mugabe talking points: “Both sides do it,” “Left0Wing groups got investigated, too,” “the president did not know what was going on in his administration because he was too busy killing Osama bin Laden.” “This is just a partisan witch hunt.”

Up next, “It’s time to move on and let the president get back to doing his important work for the American people.”
